So, how about that WIllie Mitchell rumor?

I keed, I keed.

I didn’t like his waffling. He’ll be under Bertuzzi-level scrutiny for this season, which should be a welcome respite to some from having to constantly scrutinize only Bertuzzi. I do worry about what it will do to the development of a few guys, but if Mo can put up 25 like I think he can, there’s little reason to turn that down.

by J.J. from Kansas on Aug 3, 2010 9:58 AM CDT reply actions

Well, I think to some degree I disliked the waffling but another way I’ve looked at it is at least he’s showing that he’s considered both sides instead of signing right away and then later being like “eh….nevermind”. But, I do think he’ll fit in nicely to the team

by Casey Richey on Aug 3, 2010 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I can understand and appreciate that he’s smart enough to not have made the decision during an emotional high, like right after they took him to that Tigers’ game, but I just didn’t like that he somehow had the presence of mind to know that he wasn’t going to make the decision right then, but had the looseness of tongue to say that it was Detroit or retire for him from there before gallavanting (yes, gallavanting) off to see what the Sharks and Wild had to offer.

Hell, I can ultimately understand that getting the questions of what else he might have gotten out on the market out of the way should help him through the season during those times of niggling doubt that he made the right choice to come to Detroit. For me, it all boils down to that he shouldn’t have said Detroit or nothing, even if he was in a mental state that called for use of a tiny toy top to make sure he wasn’t dreaming.

It’s probably stupid to get worked up over a throwaway statement in the middle of July and I don’t think it’s indicative of any real character flaws, but I don’t have to like it. I’ll accept his first GWG in a Red Wings sweater as an apology though :)

by J.J. from Kansas on Aug 3, 2010 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

well from what I heard the Wild didn’t really even offer him anything. but, that could be grossly inaccurate. Yes, GROSSLY.

Does preseason count for GWG?

by Casey Richey on Aug 3, 2010 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Only in preseason games against the Hawks or Penguins and only if done against top competition.

by J.J. from Kansas on Aug 3, 2010 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions

Here’s what’s going to happen:

Final game of the season, Wings and Blackhawks are tied in the standings. Game goes to a shootout and Mo gets the winner over Turco.

Copy pasting part of a comment I made in the other thread since I posted it just minutes before this was posted.

I am happy with our lines currently.

Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Bertuzzi
Franzen-Filpulla-Zetterberg
Hudler-Cleary-Modano
Helm-Abdelkader-Eaves/Miller/Drapes

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Stuart-Kronwall
Kindl-Ericsson

Howard
Osgood

Barring an opening night injury to Franzen (again… again), I think we should be just fine. I also suspect an Ozzy-like play structure for Modano where they don’t let him play on consecutive nights. It’d conserve him for the playoffs (where he is a maestro) and allow 5-10 extra games for the Miller/Eaves/Draper combo or a call up from Grand Rapids.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 3, 2010 10:06 AM CDT reply actions

Sweet jeebus, no more Johan injuries.

I was wondering that too about Modano, like if they’d rest him often if the team is able to remain healthy. Those top three lines are incredible and the fourth line is going to have excellent energy no matter who fills that final spot.

by Casey Richey on Aug 3, 2010 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions

There's also Holmstrom

Let’s face it, last year was a blessing for Homer holding up over most of a season. He’s awesome and he’ll play through things that would make me cry (like a hangnail, for instance), but if we can make it so he only has to play about 60 games this season and be well-rested and angry for the playoffs, then I like whatever makes that possible.

by J.J. from Kansas on Aug 3, 2010 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Homer is a worry spot, too. But I think they have been trying to get Abdelkader to learn his role for the future. Along with Franzen and Bertuzzi, we have three quasi-grinders and goalie-blockers to back up Homer if it is needed.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 3, 2010 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't forget Cleary

He’s been working on the net-front thing, as well.

by Big Z in Orlando on Aug 3, 2010 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

hangnails are the worst. I can’t type with them (kidding)

No, you make a good point about Homer. It’s so unpredictable as to his ability to play a full season but considering the abuse, it makes sense.

by Casey Richey on Aug 3, 2010 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

The type of game that Homer plays makes him prone to injury. The fact that he has not missed more games over the course of his career is actually quite remarkable.

The Modano signing will give them depth and some insurance in case there are injuries again this year. Although I can’t imagine them happening to the degree they did last year.

Eh.

I was honestly hoping they’d let Helm step up this year. But, I guess they don’t want that. This could either turn out to be a very good move, or a very unwise one.

by von Awesome on Aug 3, 2010 10:21 AM CDT reply actions

They could always move Cleary to the fourth line and let Helm play on the third. I think Helm playing and learning from Modano would actually be a really good thing. But you’d be splitting him from Abdelkader. Those two have the makings of a career line-partner relationship.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 3, 2010 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Cleary makes $2.8M. Whether that’s an overpayment is subject to debate, but I don’t think that making him play fourth line minutes in favor of Helm is a way to go. I’d sooner move Modano to the fourth line and let Helm center Hudler and Cleary. Of course, it’s obvious that Babcock disagrees with me, in that he stated pre-Modano (heh, Primadonna) that he wanted Abby as the 3rd line center.

by J.J. from Kansas on Aug 3, 2010 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions

If we really want to win, we go with what is best regardless of cost. If Zetterberg starts playing like Meech… well, we have to consider giving him Meech minutes. You can’t play badly and not do anything about it because of how much money a player makes.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 3, 2010 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think Helm is better than Cleary and Cleary hasn’t been playing badly. It’s very easy to overlook how clutch Dan Cleary really is.

by J.J. from Kansas on Aug 3, 2010 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Never said he was. I’m just saying that if we really wanted to give Helm a chance, Cleary is the obvious odd man out on the third line.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 3, 2010 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Ah, ok. You’re right that if it were that important, than Helm would move above Cleary rather than hudler; I just don’t think it’s that important.

by J.J. from Kansas on Aug 3, 2010 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

As far as Helm, I still don’t know if they’d put him on the third line (if Mo didn’t sign) without Eaves/Draper/Miller to join him. He has undeniable chemistry with those guys and I think that’s more important than the third minute lines in terms of him trying to hone his scoring skills. But, Hudler is one heck of a passer so that woulda done some good too.

I think when they come out

The Modano Wings jerseys/sweaters will sell like fresh hotcakes

by SonicMario(RW) on Aug 3, 2010 10:33 AM CDT reply actions

I’d buy a player t-shirt. I’m too college-student to spend money on his jersey.

Agreed. Can't afford the "real" thing.

What would your reaction to seeing a person in a Modano Wings sweater be right off? I try not to be too outwardly judgmental, but I see a guy in a Hossa Wings sweater and all I could think is how much I wish I could throw $140 away like that guy.

Modano of course is different because he’s from Michigan.

At least we know there’s no chance he’s getting his jersey retired.

by J.J. from Kansas on Aug 3, 2010 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I dont think its a waste..

im not sure if modano will spend just one year with the wings… i bet he does 2 years… maybe?

by bond021 on Aug 3, 2010 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Take good care of Mo.

I like that he chose Detroit, but I would have preferred that he retire.

Please be nice to him. He’s a little bit sensitive.

I would have preferred he went to the Wild if he didn’t want to retire. To me, Modano returning to Minnesota to finish his career would have been poetic.

He will

be back to dallas for a front office job… that is if the city of dallas dosent do a cleveland style exit on him like lebron.

by bond021 on Aug 3, 2010 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions

woah woah woah, stop right there

“cleveland style exit?”

it wasn’t the city that gave up on lebron, it was lebron who gave up on the city.

No Limits.

by arkanfel on Aug 3, 2010 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

You’re right. And the city pretty much took a giant shit on him after he gave up.

Detroit didn’t do what Cleveland did when Federov left. And Federov leaving was far more controversial than Lebron leaving.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 3, 2010 1:50 PM CDT up reply actions

to (Detroit) hockey fans maybe

but you can’t possibly argue that it got more attention/scrutiny/controversy on the whole than the lebron fiasco did. the man was the biggest free agent in the history of the sport, which you can’t really say for Fedorov.

No Limits.

by arkanfel on Aug 4, 2010 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

He arguably was the biggest free agent in NHL history the first time around with the whole Carolina fiasco. We matched his contract and he had the richest single season (per game) in NHL history.

Wow i didnt

say i disagreed with cavs fans… i was just using it as a example as long as they part seperate ways in good spirit. he will be back. Yea i totally agree with you… but thats not the discussion i was shooting for.. i just ment if the fans and club stay cool with mo then he will return. I should have phrased it a little better i apologize.

by bond021 on Aug 3, 2010 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it should be a good fit..

As long as it doesn’t effect Helmer and the decent contract he deserves. Helm could get a raise based on that one man penalty kill in the playoffs, alone.

If injuries

were a main problem last year, why sign a guy who missed 23 games last season because of injury? It doesn’t make hockey sense. We should have picked up Bill Guerin or a similar type play, somebody who can provide veteran help on the 3rd line and provide much needed grit with a bit of scoring touch. Is Modano supremely talented in comparison, yes, however, I have my doubts about his ability to stay healthy and provide the energy that the Wings really need on that 3rd line. Will I be rooting for him and hoping he discovers the fountain of youth? Absolutely, but I think that is a long shit right now.

by eshad15 on Aug 3, 2010 12:06 PM CDT reply actions

I am hopeful that Modano will take that long sh** this year and prove this deal worth while.

by Rat A Tat on Aug 3, 2010 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I have no problem with Guerin, but if it came down to signing him or Modano, I’m extremely glad to have Modano.

If Modano gets injured, then we have Abby on the third line center and Helm on the fourth with our depth guys that we know can hack it stepping in.

by J.J. from Kansas on Aug 3, 2010 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

This is clearly a sign that the team is trying to win NOW.

I like that reminder that even though we are committed to our young guys, they can duke it out for 4th line minutes while the team focuses on winning a Stanley Cup in 2010-11.

Don’t get me wrong; I like Abby and Helmer, but neither is likely to contribute offensively the way that Modano can, even at 40 years old.

by Big Z in Orlando on Aug 3, 2010 12:13 PM CDT reply actions

Can't wear #9

It’s weird to think that Modano is going to wear red, but not as weird as Chelios or Hull, so I have to admit I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be fun to have another future Hall of Famer on the roster for another Cup run!

The big question is: What number will Mike Modano wear? Obviously 9 is out, so is 19, 91 might be an option I guess. Jason Williams wore 29 last year, 39, 49, 59, 69, 79, 89 are all available as far as I know. 10 is out, Abby wears 8…so what number would you guys like to see him wear??

I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing #91 out there, but who knows? Maybe another number in the 90s? Or just 90? Thoughts?

by jbert25 on Aug 3, 2010 12:48 PM CDT reply actions

I’m cool w/that!

by jbert25 on Aug 3, 2010 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, called that the first thread we had on here about Modano possibly signing with us. It was the obvious choice.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 3, 2010 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Is anyone else reminded of the Brett Hull signing with this? Aging vet that no one really wants waits until August to sign with the Wings for a shot at the Cup on a fairly stacked team?

Thought that was interesting. Of course, it’s 2 pm, so my mind is starting to wander.
