Around SBN: Events Cause Mariners To Lose To Rangers

Darren Dreger tweeted about Darren Helm's new contract. Helm will get a 2-year deal with $825,00 next season and $1,000,000 the following. At 23 years young, this is a good contract number wise for both Helm and the Wings. All that's left now is Abdelkader and a 6th defenseman.

More on this as it develops.

That's some Darren on Darren action for you on your Wednesday afternoon.

Another great signing. The cap hit’s right in line with what I was hoping.

Glad to see, also, that

it’s a two year deal. Now, all we need to do is get Abby under contract, see what’s left in the till, and get us a d-man. Is it September 18th yet?

What is the

most likely thing we will do for our d man.. kindl?… thats what i think we should do but is that what is most likely to happen?

by bond021 on Aug 4, 2010 3:40 PM CDT reply actions

I think it depends on who’s available. If we can get a decent 6/7th defenseman under contract for good money, I think he’ll split time with Kindl or Ericsson throughout the year. I vote for Kindl though and keeping excess money.

by Casey Richey on Aug 5, 2010 7:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Damnit. We have our 6th defenseman already. Why doesn’t anyone see that we NEED to have Kindl get playing time this season before it is too late?

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 4, 2010 4:13 PM CDT reply actions

oh I agree

but just put that up in the sense that the team is apparently still window shopping.

by Casey Richey on Aug 5, 2010 7:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Which disappoints me. Kindl will be our future #1 guy and certainly has the potential to be one of the best in the league. He needs to learn the ways of Nik before he retires.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 5, 2010 7:57 AM CDT up reply actions

also, it could be more for Ericsson than anything :P

by Casey Richey on Aug 5, 2010 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I don’t think Ericsson is in much trouble of losing his spot, honestly. Though, I wouldn’t mind having Mitchell on that back line with Kindl. I kinda like that pairing.

I still say we pull off the heist of the cap era and snag Weber, though.

Excellent

As for a 6th d-man, sign Exelby or bring up Kindl

Aaahhh gotcha

having cap rules along with a minor league system that can affect said cap rules really confuses me. Throw in all the different minor league affiliations and guys with names I can’t pronounce and I get totally lost

I’m bad at that stuff too. I rely on Petrella to confirm or deny haha

Great signing. . .

Helm is one of the hardest workers/grinders on our team. . .and his speed is ridiculous. . .another solid move Hockeytown

As for Kindl

I vote that his nickname be “Amazon”

by Casey Richey on Aug 5, 2010 7:28 AM CDT reply actions

Best part about this deal:

Being that it’s a two year deal, Helm will still be a restricted free agent when he hits free agency again in 2012.

by Rob Rogacki on Aug 5, 2010 8:52 AM CDT reply actions

I bet that’s why his raise for the second year was freaking 21%. Only way Holland could get him to agree to another deal where he’d be an RFA

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 5, 2010 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Eh, the percentage is misleading

He only gets a raise of $150k, which isn’t much when you consider what his next deal could look like afterward.

by Rob Rogacki on Aug 5, 2010 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Still have to put it into perspective. A 21% raise to stay with the same company in pretty much the same role is pretty much unheard of. Hell, it’s not even allowed in most pro sports leagues.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Aug 5, 2010 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not very common, if that's what you mean

But if Helm breaks out and becomes a 20-25 goal scorer, he could land upwards of $3.5-$4 million on the open market.

by Rob Rogacki on Aug 6, 2010 8:38 AM CDT up reply actions

No, you misunderstand. I agree it is a genius move by Holland. The 21% raise was likely the only way it could be done. Doesn’t negate how ridiculous a 21% raise is, though.
