Game Thread: Chicago Blackhawks vs. Detroit Red Wings
First home preseason game of the season and we've got the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks* coming to town. Jimmy Howard will play the first two periods before handing stewardship of the pipes off to Joey MacDonald. Franzen, Meech, Hudler, and Draper are your injured Red Wings. Let's hope that list doesn't grow any longer tonight.
(* that feels so dirty to type)
We're live-blogging it!

Should have known it would be the Comcast feed on NHLNet.
Debating switching to the online feed.

Haha
Junior Avalanche?
We’ve come a long way,baby.

WOOO
Wow, that was a terrible rebound. Oh the excitement of games that do not matter…I really missed hockey more than i thought I did.
I need a list
Of our prospective’s jersey numbers. Lol.
Nobody can say Mursak isn't interesting so far
I like Owens so far.

He's always losing his helmet
He wears it loose because there’s not much up there to protect anyway.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 6:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Did the Wings change the font for the names on the back of the jerseys?
It looks different, but I may just be making this up.
It is different
They use a different font for the preseason. It will go back to normal for the regular season.

I'm pretty Giddy for Tot
Smith I wasn’t aware of until a few days ago, so not as much.
Especially when it's not called
in the finals….
……
Salei looks smallish out there
Then I remember he’s playing with Ericsson.

So is Tatar in instead of Ritola?
Don’t think I’ve heard/seen him yet.
I think so
Since Ritola was slotted into that line with Modano and Cleary.
Not sure when they made the switch or why.

Smith did a good job there
Making up for the turnover. He recognized immediately and squeezed the play off.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 6:26 PM CDT reply actions
Chicago's Bollig
Not making a strong case to make their roster…
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 6:27 PM CDT reply actions
Man oh man
Lidstrom stepped into one there.
Gotta see if Homer got a piece.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 6:30 PM CDT reply actions
Definitely a tip
Beautiful by Homer. Reminiscent of Calgary last year.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 6:30 PM CDT reply actions
Seriously though
Which joker in the Detroit area thought it would be a good idea to put the Avalanche’s logo on the jerseys for the junior team in attendance tonight?
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 6:33 PM CDT reply actions
Not many regulars in Chicago's lineup
I think, what, Campbell’s their best defenseman and Bolland is their top forward tonight?
Tomorrow will be a much different story.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 6:50 PM CDT reply actions
I thought so too
Good fighting on the boards and on-ice awareness.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions
Janik was defending himself
Also, previous rush was a hint of what Smith has to work on. He’ll get some size and not get knocked around so much.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:01 PM CDT reply actions
Howard
He kind of took himself out of the play a little bit there once he did not hold onto the puck.
Hell yeah!
Datsyuk and Zetterberg.
Good play by Smith earlier to help keep the puck in the zone
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:04 PM CDT reply actions
I like how we're playing
Good transitions, good puck control, good gap coverage.
Now watch me jinx it ;)
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:07 PM CDT reply actions
Realistically
we should win by 5 or 6 goals. Chicago did not bring a lot of their better players with the home game for them tomorrow night. There is no excuse for us not looking extremely good tonight…

I agree
I think Kopecky will lead them in ice time for forwards. We SHOULD smoke these guys.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions
Clever play by Tatar
Reminds me of the time Datsyuk lost his stick and kicked it forward to Zetterberg for an empty-netter.

You guys are making me feel old
I’m barely younger than Franzen.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Very True
And my girl turned six months old today.
She’s already a Wings fan.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions
Sustained pressure.
So close by Tatar!
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:14 PM CDT reply actions
Question
Will Hudler or Modano be playing point on the second power play unit? Or none of the above?
Modano likely
Not sure where Hudler fits.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see the occasional five-forward PP unit.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions
I wouldn't mind seeing Franzen-Filppula-Hudler
In front of Modano-Kronwall on the 2nd PP unit.

I can't decide
Whether I like Owens or Emmerton more tonight.
Neither is a goal-scorer on that three-man line either.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:23 PM CDT reply actions
i just hope hes not hurt..thats what im trying to get too
by chicagowingsfreak! on Sep 24, 2010 7:25 PM CDT reply actions
The more I watch Tatar
the more I wish we had room for him on the roster…then again, I am happy there is that problem
Unfortunate Stat Time
Howard’s done for the night with an .875 save percentage.
He was better than that. I thought his positioning and scrambling were good.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:31 PM CDT reply actions
Oh yeah
That’s what I was getting at. Funny way it looks when you can only see the stat sheet.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions
agreed
yeah i like Tatar a lot…hes really good positionaly and he can move quick to the puck..he also looks a liitle like dangle on defense…i smell a winner!
by chicagowingsfreak! on Sep 24, 2010 7:39 PM CDT reply actions
My thoughts:
-passing and fluid skating should be better between the blue lines
-i think Smith looks a little confused in the defensive corners..or not confident..ur a hobby baker finalist..snap off
-Dats and Z give me a hard on
-Modano….i love u….i wanna love u…make me love u..shoot the puck
-LETS GO MCDONALD!!!
by chicagowingsfreak! on Sep 24, 2010 7:46 PM CDT reply actions
Smith
Definitely looks more confident in the offensive zone.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions
Better save percentage than MacDonald
Now for Howard.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:47 PM CDT reply actions
Did the first one hit the post?
I thought he just missed it high.
by HockeyGuy9125 on Sep 24, 2010 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions
i am so stoked on this rookie line..holly shit…i did not expect Owens..studtacular
by chicagowingsfreak! on Sep 24, 2010 7:52 PM CDT reply actions
It seems like whenever he actually makes legit contact,,,
it still counts. Then the ones where he does not make any contact are disallowed…
by HockeyGuy9125 on Sep 24, 2010 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Imagine how many career goals he'd have
Without all the waive-offs.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Consider all the would be goals disallowed for
early whistles…for Red Wings players in general.
by HockeyGuy9125 on Sep 24, 2010 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions
The NHL Season has officially begun...
A goal was disallowed because of Homer “in the crease/goalie interference”
Ouch, Ericsson
Tried to step up on a guy in the neutral zone and got flattened.
How does a 6’5" guy get pancaked like that?
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 8:06 PM CDT reply actions
how the hell
does the parade not get 100% of the vote for that offseason poll (to anyone watching on the NHL Network)
No
We’re in the lead, so it didn’t offset.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions
i dont see
Janik making the squad with all the deep talent we have. bummer
by chicagowingsfreak! on Sep 24, 2010 8:10 PM CDT reply actions
Imagine when Tatar will be as strong as Datsyuk
He makes me feel a lot better about the Red Wings’ future.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 8:11 PM CDT reply actions
Finally saw a replay of Helm's 2nd breakaway
Still not sure how he missed. Aaargh.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 8:14 PM CDT reply actions
Maltby back on
After limping off on his last shift from a blocked shot. Good to see.
by J.J. from Kansas on Sep 24, 2010 8:16 PM CDT reply actions
Nice job controlling the puck
on the delayed penalty. But no quality chance out of it.
Nice play by Cleary
Trying to get Modano his first Red Wings goal.
