Player Nicknames Anyone?
Hello Wingnuts! As you may recall, I promised a FanPost over the weekend. Well, here's my introduction. I haven't been a Wings fan for too long, but I'm getting more familiar with the team as the season goes on. I'm still having some issues figuring out who plays with who and on which line, but I'm working on it.
I participated in my first Game Thread last night in the Wings OT victory over the Blue Jackets, and although I was more of a Drive-By commenter, I was noticing the various nicknames people have for the players. This got me thinking: are there any nicknames that we can all agree on? For example, what should Joey MacDonald's official Winging It In Motown nickname be? How about Justin Abdelkader, or Jan Mursak? I know there are the official nicknames, like the Eurotwins or the Mule or Filp, but besides that I have no clue. The only one I have made up is Blackjack for Tomas Tatar because he's #21.
Post your ideas in the comments section below, and hopefully one of our talented editors could make these Official WIM nicknames. Oh and thanks for taking the time to read this.

You’re trying to appeal to our narcissism, and it’s working.
I like the idea of having some nicknames for the new guys, but Abdelkader will probably always be known as either Abby or Gator. For Joey, I would imagine there would be a play on “Mac”.
I leave it up to everybody on the other new guys. What say everybody? Any thoughts?
Perhaps I am...

"I'm still having some issues figuring out who plays with who and on which line"
what i do is just pay attention to what the starting lines look like because any number of changes can be made in game and between games. line combinations don’t stay around for too long unless a line gets chemistry or is just “set” (ex. at the beginning of the season, when Franzen-Filppula-Bertuzzi was hot, the top line was “set” at Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom—my memory may be wrong, but i think it was something like that). as you get more familiar with the team, it may be better to gauge the players’ attributes and roles within the team because (especially with these injuries and as players slowly come back) it makes lines easier to figure out and remember that way. defense pairs are much easier to remember, so you shouldnt have a problem with those (except maybe now with Stuart’s injury).
nicknames: someone else mentioned “Tatar sauce” or some form of it for Tatar. otherwise, i suck royally at nicknames.
Oh I see.
That’s a good idea. I should try that. With all of the injuries happening though I’ve been getting more and more confused. The one line I am sure about is Filppula-Bertuzzi-Hudler.
With my luck though, once I figure out who plays with who, all of the injured players will come back, which will lead to line shuffling and then I’ll be confused again! But for now I will try and use your suggestion.

For joey.
I like Big Mac, MacDonalds, or Ronald. I feel that it has to be McDonalds based. Hell we could even call him the Grimace and I would be happy.
I was thinking about that.
Or Mayor McCheese. Also I remember when I was a kid around St. Patricks day they had Uncle O’Grimacey.
A couple thoughts.
I think of Uncle Joey from full house when I hear Joey MacDonald. So I am most likely going to call him Uncle Joey. That or Big Mac which I saw in the game thread yesterday, but only if he is doing something amazing.
Jan Mursak? I have no clue. Maybe something to do with his speed? He is pretty fast, but will take a back seat to Helm seen as he has kind of claimed the reputation of speedy. So just to take a stab. Grand Rockets, at least while he is still just a GR call up. I know.. dumb. I am not creative.
Im going to stick with Abby and Tatar Tots like the others. I like them both.
My problem with Big Mac,
Is it’s McCarty’s nickname.
J-Mac deserves something better than that.
Dancing Datsyuk Decidedly Dazzles Dainty Defensemen
And by better...
…I mean he deserves his own, not piggy backing on someone else’s.

Wow I didn't think this would be so popular!
Thanks for all of these tips and ideas. Oh and I thought of another one; for I call Darren Helm “Speed Racer”. So far everything looks great. Keep up the creativity!
Just a note: you don’t have to come up with nicknames for the people I listed, you can share names about anyone on the team. Just wanted to make that clear in case there was any confusion.

While we're at it...
Anybody got a nickname for Eaves? Can’t think of one…
Actually, I’ve heard Hattrick Eaves, but its not really a ‘nickname’
Go for it
Personally,
I like “tots” for Tatar. I have a feeling that he will have a ton of nicknames though, due to his name being easy to play around with.

I call Tatar "Tots"
Because it’s a cute nickname for an energetic youngster.
Datsyuk is Pav, Dats, or the Magician, but those are pretty obvious and shouldn’t surprise anyone. Sometimes I call Filppula “Wally” because his first name is the Finnish version of Walter.
And I personally refer to number 44 as Toddberculosis, but that is the result of a long-standing enmity that has become ingrained habit by now.
Sometimes the nicknames come out of the games as they go along, so someone will get a nickname for something they did in an earlier game.
If you have no idea who someone is talking about, just ask. We won’t bite your head off. I have a hard time thinking of guys by their numbers only, myself.

Yeah I definately like "Tots"
and I did not know Filppula’s first name was Walter in English. Very informative!
But I do have one question: who is Buckets and how did he get that nickname?

Buckets
is Dan Cleary.
This is from the Glossary over at A2Y (http://www.kuklaskorner.com/index.php/a2y/glossary)
21. Charlie Buckets This entry on 6 February really explains the Buckets phenonenon.
Dan Cleary, the boy with the golden ticket. Wandering the streets of dreary whatevertownBucketsgrewupin, not wanting to go home because Grampa Joe wasn’t getting out of bed and yet another dinner of disgusting thick tasteless soup awaited him. A sparkle in the gutter, a silver dollar. That money could feed his family for a week! Oh, the turmoil. Tasty Wonka chocolate and a chance at a trip every child in the world was hoping for, or food on the Bucket table. Screw it. Grabbed it. Bought the bar. Ripped it open. Golden Ticket. Hell yes.
That’s Dan Cleary. The Wings gave him his golden ticket and he’s been a revelation ever since.
Check out the glossary over there, it should help you pick up on some of the terms used around the Wings blogosphere.

Oh ok I get it.
I thought it was Cleary, but I just didn’t get how it fit him. Now I understand. Thanks!

regarding Wally Filppula
I was bored and started looking up names of family, friends, players, etc. here: http://www.behindthename.com/
It’s really pretty cool. I found out that my first name can be traced back to (possibly, it’s pretty old) the goddess Hecate and later the Greek word for “pure.”

and as for lines and defensive pairings
I have a tough time keeping those straight, too. I second the suggestion to look at the starting lines and pairings, and you will get an idea as games go on of who usually plays with whom, and will then be able to notice when someone seems out of place.
The best part about starting lineups is they are written ahead of time. :)

I know some people have different names for Helm, but I just call him Helm. It’s short enough and works pretty well if he scores a little more (helm=handle).
Bear (Cleary)
Tater (Tatar)
insert “sac” joke (Mursak)
Jack/JD (Janik)
Lidas (Lidstrom)
“Special” E (Ericsson)
Rafi (Rafalski)
Kronor (Kronwall)
Stooge (Stuart)
that guy (Salei)
Little Mac or Mac Jr. (MacDonald)
