Source: Nabokov, Red Wings close to finalizing deal
Well, we've all heard the news: reports are that the Red Wings are close to signing a deal with former Shark Evgeni Nabokov, who had been toiling in the KHL. Everything is still being kept under wraps, but we'll have a post up once we know more. Keep in mind that if a deal is signed with him, he needs to clear waivers before officially becoming a part of the team.

We are SOL
This is the exact same as the Blues signing Marek Svatos and Kyle Wellwood; once they agree to a deal with the player, then the player (and the deal he signed with the team) have to clear re-entry waivers, so all 29 teams get a shot at him for the price the Wings signed him for (if a deal is done). The Wings have no right of refusal, much in the same way that St Louis could not block Nashville and San Jose from claiming Svatos and Wellwood, respectively.
I dunno if many teams have goaltending needs
But I think that, if we do try to pick up Nabokov, theres a 50-50 shot other teams will try to pick him up
Go for it

It's such an assinine rule.
What’s the point of having a contract in place BEFORE the waivers? At best it serves as a way for competition to cockblock the signing team from getting who they paid for.
Good...?
He’s been pretty bad when he actually played , but I guess we might need him….
Go for it
Joey Mac or Nabby as the backup?
I’ll take Nabby. And if Howard continues the suck train, we have an experienced backup ready to take the reins while Howard adjusts his suckometer.
I like this
Ozzy has had a nagging groin injury all year and Howie hasnt been great. Nabby is a great backup and will do great infront of a great team

Could Nabakov say he wanted a 8 year deal for 500 million billion dollars
then after he cleared waivers sign with the wings like a 2 year deal for some reasonable amount?
I’m not real familiar with the NHL waiver system.

Off the top of my head?
No: it is my understanding he has to have a deal in place with the Wings and then once the contract is approved by the NHL (as all contracts are), then he gets put into the waiver pool.
OK thanks.
I figured it couldnt be that easy lol

Nabby
I think even a 2 year deal would deter most teams, but who knows. Wings have nothing to lose here.
If the Wings sign him and he is snagged off of waivers
aren’t the Wings still on the hook for half of his salary hit? Or am I wrong about this particular type of waiver?

Update
http://twitter.com/detsportsnation/status/28201950344384512
According to reports, the deal is worth about $570K, which pro-rates out to a cap hit of about $250K. If he’s not claimed at that rate, I’ll……do something fairly embarrassing at H2H2.
Yeah it will take an act of god for us to get him

Not if he has a trade lined up.
Either pay him and have a multi year deal. Or have a low ass salary cap and send a pick or a prospect to whatever team takes him.
i wonder
What if they worked a contract with a ridiculous player option after the season to keep other teams away, and have a gentlemans agreement with Nabokov that he will not pick up the option after the season. Is that legal?

Probably Nabokov wanted to play in the NHL
and the Wings brass being the gentlemen that they are arranged for him to comeback and be a wing for a day….
"I was in the pool! I WAS IN THE POOL!I was in the pool! I WAS IN THE POOL!"
wouldn't that be a fraction of his previous salary?
Wasn’t he making like 4-5x that for the Sharks? If he’s willing to sign with anybody at that amount, he must really want to play! He must realize there will be a slim chance it’s for the Wings at that amount. After all, he is a decent goalie…better than some teams have playing #1 right now.
Can’t believe Wings would just dump Ozzie for this…at least hoping it’s because his hernia was worse than originally thought. It’s not that I want him to be out longer, I just don’t want the Wings to dump him…it’s so unlike them!

salary $6 mil...
If AP post I saw is correct, Nabby made $6 million with Sharks last year. Would he actually sign for $570 thousand? Prorated for full season that would be $1.14 million. Quite a come down..although he did go to KHL cuz no one wanted to sign him /or sign him at what he wanted.
by wingsluver4ever on Jan 20, 2011 4:37 PM CST up reply actions
I thought the $570 was for the full season and the prorate was $250? That’s an even bigger come down.
You're right...
Saw that on another post, but just haven’t gotten back to fix my post….thanks for correcting the record =)

Can somebody explain how waivers applies here?
Why does he have to clear waivers if the Wings are the ones offering the guy money to come back? I guess I’m confused…is this a “new era/cap” rule, or has it always been like this?
My real question is what’s the point of the rule? It seems to me like “fair cheating”…the Wings offer him a contract, but have to make sure nobody else wants him before they can get him. I guess I’m just really confused. Mostly because there’s no way he clears waivers at that price ($570K), so I doubt we’ll see Nabby in a Winged Wheel.
Agreed
There are more wing haters on this planet than there are people who hate the dreaded swastika…so I can only imagine wings being ’Nab’akoved
"I was in the pool! I WAS IN THE POOL!I was in the pool! I WAS IN THE POOL!"
Per George Malik on Twitter
It’s part of the CBA: a player who played in Europe after October 1 and signed a contract after December 1 must go through waivers before they are allowed to get in with the team that signed them.
This is in place to prevent a guy like Peter Forsberg (follow me to an alternate reality where he is actually healthy) from playing in Europe on a reduced schedule and then signing a contract with a playoff contender right before the playoffs began.
wouldn't be against this
LETS GO RED WINGS!
2011 will be the year....better be....
Troy Tulowitzki: "When people think of the Rockies, I want them to think of a winning organization."
I don't get this...
Let’s say he wants to play here… shouldn’t he get to say no to other teams?
And I really don’t mind this. I would want him as a back up, seen as I strongly believe in Jimmy and Jimmy is the organizations love child, born and raised. But think about it. Going into the playoffs with Jimmy, Ozzie and Nabby. I don’t mind that at all.
I absoulty love this providing we don't loose any players.
Ozzie got his 400th win and has a screwed up hernia. Put him on LTIR and sign Nabokov to a multi year deal with bonuses for about the same cap hit. The only area this team is deep is in net.
This would push Howard to be better and would give us an insurance police. Not to mention keep everyone fresh going into the playoffs.
1-year, $570,000
According to Khan, MLive, little while ago…not a multi-year, no-trade deal cuz don’t want to be tied in until would see how he did.
Kenny must have something up his sleeve…or, just through out the offer as he said “just in case.” With this offer he can’t think for a sec Nabby would pass waivers…unless he’s pulling in all his favors.

he may be counting
on the fact that no other team has an open roster slot for the rest of the year. (I believe) that a player claimed off waivers has to remain on the roster for the rest of the season.

How long will it take him to clear waivers?
On the off chance he makes it all the way through.
"Some people watch adult videos on their computer. I go to YouTube and watch Jahvid Best highlight clips. That’s what gets me aroused." - Jim Schwartz
Depends on when the waiver request was filed
If the request was filed today before noon ET (likely not, as there would have been some announcement of a deal), he would clear tomorrow at noon ET, assuming there is no claim.
All weekday (Monday – Friday) requests are 24 hours, any weekend (Saturday – Sunday) requests take 48 hours.

How does this make any sense at all?
I understand why this rule is in place, but it seems to stupid. If we’re the ones who want to bring him back, we should get damn dibs on him…
Go for it
Nabokov signed with a "No Move clause"
What is a No Move clause?
He can't be sent down to the AHL
"Some people watch adult videos on their computer. I go to YouTube and watch Jahvid Best highlight clips. That’s what gets me aroused." - Jim Schwartz
Looks like he can't be traded a well.
"Some people watch adult videos on their computer. I go to YouTube and watch Jahvid Best highlight clips. That’s what gets me aroused." - Jim Schwartz
Yeah
I saw something that said he couldn’t be traded or waived again (I assume that basically means sent down to the AHL?) without Detroit having first crack at him again? That’s interesting. I still don’t see how this would in any way be a possible losing situation for the Islanders though, so I won’t be surprised to see them snatch him. Seems like it’d be worth the risk for them. What have they got to lose, really?
Yeah I can't see him making it back to us.
I’m kind of surprised at this deal. I’m not real sure what the wings have to gain from all of this. Unless they are just hoping against hope that he clears waivers.
You have to figure Nabakov is better then a lot of teams #2 goalies. I’m going to laugh my ass off if San Jose claims him.

SJ pulled up a University of BC goalie for a "one day trial run"
as their backup against Vancouver today (I remember Phoenix doing the same thing in New York, out of desperation). Thinking about it, I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised if they did try to nab him back. The kid’s stats with the university team are pretty bad. Wouldn’t that be… funny…
Not quite true.
As part of any deal signed after December 1st (maybe Jan 1, missed what they said after the game), he cannot be sent down to the AHL. And that goes for any team that may pick him up off waivers.
So a team can’t just claim a player to keep them from a rival and then hide them in the AHL.
So this isn’t something that is part of the contract he signed, it’s part of the CBA.
Dancing Datsyuk Decidedly Dazzles Dainty Defensemen
It is part of the contract he signed its just not relevant in that way in this case.
You are right about not being able to send anyone down signed after that though.
