Off-Day Open Thread: I'm Back

A goalie mask full of goalie masks? BRAAAAAAAAHM

Mornin' folks.  J.J. here back from a week's vacation cruising around the warm and friendly Caribbean.  I'm back home now, the seven feet of snow have been cleared from my driveway, and I'm caught up in watching the Wings games I missed on my trip.  For those who are curious, I'm hoping to get the CSSI mega-post up before Wednesday's game.  I'm shooting for tomorrow night, but if I get it done earlier, I'll put it up then.  So, what did I miss?  Let's see:

Evgeni Nabokov signs for pennies-on-the-six-million-dollars-he-wanted-last-summer and then gets claimed by the Isles on Re-Entry Waivers - I know that many of you are probably sick of this story by now, so I'll try to be brief; Ken Holland took a gamble that we could get a guy who could have been a big difference-maker for a low salary.  Nabby's agent screwed that up by releasing a statement that he'd play for whomever claimed him and now Nabby's been made to look the part of a liar by sitting home instead of reporting to the Isles.  The hanging up on Garth Snow thing is amusing, but I dont' give a shit about the Isles.  What I do give a shit about is what's going to happen to the rule that requires KHL cast-offs to go through re-entry waivers when the next CBA gets negotiated.  There's not a simple solution to let teams sign NHL-caliber players who couldn't find teams during the offseason and went to the KHL without also letting teams tell a guy to go play in a European league (with a lighter schedule and less physical style of play) for half the season before signing a contract to bring him back to North America for a playoff push.  To ease up on this rule, you'd almost have to make the league offices responsible for judging each example on a case-by-case basis to see if they feel the spirit of the rule has been broken.  Since I don't trust anything the league does on a case-by-case basis, it's probably just best to say it sucks for the guys who couldn't get contracts during the summer that they're less likely to be offered deals by GMs who don't want to see these players stolen.

Red Wings earn five points in five games, lose Holmstrom to injury - Even worse is that in earning those five points, they also gave Central Division rivals four points of their own due to their inability to win a game in regulation.  Perhaps it's because I wasn't abreast of the general feelings of Wings fans for most of the week, and perhaps it's because I watched all five games over the span of about 20 hours, but the Chicago loss didn't bother me as much as I was expecting it to.  I wasn't lucky enough to avoid getting the score of that one before I watched it, so I went all out and read the recaps of the game too before viewing.  From what I read, I was expecting something worse than the terrible Penguins game, but what I saw against Chicago was a tired team struggling for chemistry with third-and-fourth liners trying to step in for skill guys unable to finish plays that could have been goals.  I read one recap that said that without Jimmy Howard making big saves, that game could have been 8-1.  I agree with that sentiment, but also think that without half our forward crew being made up of either Griffins or guys who were previously in Mike Babcock's early season sit-out rotation, that game could have just as easily been 4-1 Detroit.  There are problems to be sure, but I saw reasons to be upbeat coming out of the all-star break.

Saturday before last against the Blue Jackets, a lot of bloggers missed a very obvious joke:  C'mon, Ken & Mick tell us that during the offseason Joey MacDonald goes to work on his parents' farm and nobody puts it together that it means that old MacDonald has a farm, e-i-e-i-o?  Mid-season grind hurts us all, I tell you. (if this joke was made anywhere in a comments section or on Twitter, please say so in the comments, so I can give proper credit where it's due.)

So, what else did I miss?  What else do you guys want to talk about?  We'll have a bit more on the TPL/WIIM All-Star Game fantasty draft competition coming soon, so stay tuned for that.  It's an off-day open thread where anything goes, unless it doesn't.

Welcome back

It is now official that Sidney Crosby is going to miss the ASG, so we’re waiting on word on how is replacement is going to be. We know it won’t be Zetterberg, but I wonder if we’ll see Mike Richards get named.

by Amerinadian on Jan 24, 2011 10:42 AM CST reply actions

I would think Richards

Did Patrick Sharp get named though? They already took Briere to replace Iginla. Maybe they don’t want to fill it up with Flyers?

by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 24, 2011 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

Forgot about that

But they also already have 3 Hawks with Toews, Kane and Keith. I’m thinking Backstrom from Washington may get in (since the only Cap is Ovi), and if Malkin ends up pulling out, then we might see Sharp at that point. However, even though he is on a hated team, I wouldn’t mind seeing Teemu Selanne get named as a replacement: he’s got 43 points in 42 games on a not-very-good Anaheim team, and it’s likely his last year. I think it would be a good story, and he’s deserving of a spot.

by Amerinadian on Jan 24, 2011 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

Is Rossi still saying that Malkin is likely to pull out?

Yeah, I’d probably go Backstrom-Sharp-Richards in that order for replacements.

by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 24, 2011 11:06 AM CST up reply actions

Nothing official yet

Last word I heard is that he was “unlikely” to play (probably the same as you’ve heard) and that an official decision will be made soon. He missed the last game against the Devils, so they may sit him out in order to rest him up for the stretch drive.

Green is also from Washington.

that’s going to be the tough part. I’ve got a five-game idea in my head about which players I know are overall minuses, but I have to re-watch pretty much every game and re-take notes to make sure I’m doing it fairly.

Bettmann has those beady little cricket eyes, a smooth hairless head, he makes weird chirpy noises, I gaurantee he rubs his legs together when noone is looking, he’s small, I bet his knees actually bend backwards, and crickets kinda look like they have little collared shirts on.

Anyone want to try to take this to photoshop? please?

but also think that without half our forward crew being made up of either Griffins or guys who were previously in Mike Babcock’s early season sit-out rotation, that game could have just as easily been 4-1 Detroit.

Have to agree there. It wasn’t until the last week and a half or so, I think, that the depleted offense became very very apparent, and I would imagine at least part of that is that things keep happening and Babcock has to keep shuffling lines- just when guy start to gain some chemistry and some mutual trust with each other, they are shifted to different lines because something else has happened. That had to catch up eventually and I think it did this last week. And you’re right, it’s a sign for the positive. It’s pretty impressive that this team was able to maintain their offensive power for so long considering that is where the vast majority of injuries have made an impact. It’s kind of nice, in a way, to know this is what we have down the line, and soon enough our big guns start returning to the line up and we’ll hopefully be blowing through the competition once again. And we’ll have Datsyuk back in the puck-sniping game so that should take care of about half of the would-be goals against us.

I'm pretty sure I heard myself say

“I wish that had been Modano!” at one point. So. There you go.

Nobody wants to be making excuses and so on, but it’s impossible to argue that the injuries (and illnesses, in the recent case of the FilFlu), both the short-lived and the longterm, have had a tremendous impact. This would have tanked a lesser team.

I like Osgoods take on the Nabokov situtation

“I haven’t put much thought into it, but the Islanders are terrible so I’m not sure why they did that,” said Osgood, a former New York goalie.

Not sure

But katie Strang of NYI got in touch with Osgood and he told her that he was terribly misquoted (If I am not wrong AP based Larry Lage broke this news out first). Apparently Osgood was in the middle of a group where this phrase was uttered and the quote was attributed to him even though his mouth was not the source….

McCarty type players are hard to find.

by wingsluver4ever on Jan 24, 2011 4:58 PM CST up reply actions

meh

It wouldn’t kill them to stand up more and maybe get in more fights to prevent the 1000 cross checks they get a game, but I like this team I like the players so I’m not really angry or upset about their lack to fight. Their not the typical hockey team that have enforcers but their also the team every other team in the league tries to motto themselves after. 4 Stanley cups 19 straight post season appearances why mess with something that’s not broken?

Sure were missing a McCarty type player but our 3rd and 4th line bring speed and passion to the game and our 1st and 2nd line when healthy are the most dangerous in the NHL. Our defense has one of the greatest to ever play the game.

What we lack in an enforcer we make up for in everything else. It’s like complaining that you don’t have a yacht when you own 6sports cars and a private jet. Sure you wish u had a yacht but would you trade everything else for it?

Also the complainant the team lacks heart is just stupid

by Rwings on Jan 24, 2011 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

Seriously, we just need to make fighters out of some of our own guys. We need not shop for an enforcer. That mantle can be handed over to Abdelkader and Eaves. Just give them the latitude to go and take on icks who otherwise just want to bang up players for the sake of doing it. I am sure they can train in Boxing/jujitsu/ninjutsu or whatever…

What a crock. Lack toughness? Maybe. But lack heart? I don’t think that’s remotely true.

Homer, Jimmy last straw....

I don’t see the Wings playing listlessly, without energy, etc. as anything but it’s just too much. After last season and then game after game in the last 6 weeks, I think Homer going down and Jimmy (though thankfully not for long) was just finally it. Not consciously any means, but a subconscious feeling of defeatism….when is it going to end?

That and the lines being so mixed up with Grifs (not that they haven’t done a great job) that regular Wings haven’t played with, and haven’t developed chemistry with.

The All-Star break is needed by these guys so much…to rest, to refocus, and most of all to get some normalcy back as Pav, Cleary and Homer get ready to return.

Yes. I know some guys have looked terrible, but this is when our Wings need our support most, instead of beating up on them. They are still playing above 500 through this stretch…which considering is really a good sign.

by wingsluver4ever on Jan 24, 2011 5:09 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Theirs no other team in the league

That could lose the type of players we’ve lost last year and make the play-offs, or lose the type of players we’ve lost this year and still be ranked 3rd overall in the NHL. This team just wins and wins a lot no matter whose injured and on the ice, we just have a highly depth team that no other team in any other sport can say they have.

People complain for the sake of complaining, and try to find something wrong with the team when most of the time it’s nothing. We complain about Osgood one of the winiest goalies in the history of the NHL. Franzen our leading scorer for not scoring more goals. Some in jest others not but it is what it is.

by Rwings on Jan 24, 2011 5:21 PM CST up reply actions

True

and True…for the expectations that we have.

by bharatwaj5 on Jan 24, 2011 5:35 PM CST up reply actions

Indeed.

You and wingsluver4ever both. And I also noticed the other day how funny it was that everybody’s complaining about Franzen’s lack of scoring when he leads the team in goals. We’ve just developed expectations of a totally different caliber, I guess. We expect things out of the Wings that we wouldn’t imagine expecting out of other teams because we’ve learned they are capable of more than most. I don’t think there’s necessarily anything wrong with feeling frustrated when the expectations aren’t meant, as long as there’s some sense of perspective there. You have to recognize the fact that, despite everything, they are still playing better than most teams in the league. Seriously. That’s why, even if it isn’t pretty, they still continue winning more often than not.

I do think there’s real merit in the idea that all of this “adversity” will make them a better team in the end than they otherwise would have been. It will come to an end eventually and the other side is looking awfully bright.

I freaking love Datsyuk.

He’s got to be one of the funniest guys in the league. I’d seriously pay to watch him stand on a stage and talk. I mean, the language issues are incredibly endearing and remind me of being back in Romania a bit, but even beyond that, he’s such a funny guy.

I read that with Holmstrom they are shooting for the Ottawa game but that’s more uncertain than Pav and Cleary who are definitely expected back for it at this point. It may or may not take a couple more missed games beyond that. Can’t remember where specifically but it was an article linked by the RW twitter (which I have bookmarked and check regularly even though I do not have a twitter account- great source of up-to-date information, indeed).

To sign up for a twitter account and use it strictly for an up-to-date news feed. I did that for a couple months before I actually started posting tweets myself, and I know people who use twitter for nothing else BUT for gathering news.

That way it doesn’t cause you to be drawn into conversations, but it does collect the information you are interested in the most and you can check it at your leisure. :)
