Red Wings Ugly Third Jersey Contest

Fun challenge out of the Red Wings' blogosphere today, as sites Etched In Cold and The Production Line are pairing up to give fans the chance to create the most hideous third jersey ever and to give it a Red Wings' theme.  Full details are at both sites, but here are some details:

  • There WILL be prizes.  Etched In Cold has the details.
  • Submissions need to be in by February 10th.  They can be sent to either EtchedInCold@Gmail.com or contact@theproductionline.US
  • Just make it a picture.  Use Photoshop/Gimp/MS Paint/Whatever.  They're not listing any official rules about picture size limits or file formats, but use common sense.  Nobody wants a 2538X15000 bitmap.
  • Naturally, it has to be a Wings jersey, but that doesn't mean it has to have the Winged Wheel on it.  Go nuts.

So there you have it.  Make the ugliest, most abominable jersey you can think of and see if you can make it any worse than any of the current third jerseys uglying up Etched In Cold's main page.  I promise you that if you can make it simultaneously as ugly as the Ducks' thirds and as cliche as the Jackets' thirds, you should win a prize.

I don't hate most of these

Especially since the Predators’ old mustard-yellow and the Stars cow-uterus-constellation are gone, but when you see the same design on five logos, it’s a bit ridiculous.

The ugliest one for me is the Thrashers’ for being a combination of horrible color and just plain boring. The Senators and Lighting ones are bad for putting nicknames of nicknames on them. I would say I like none of these more than the teams’ current ones though.

The Oilers’ may be a tie

My Opinion

I guess my main issue is everyone jumping on the “light blue or round logo” bandwagon.

I don’t actually HATE a lot of them, a lot of that wording was to inspire the contest. We want BAD. So to get everyone thinking ‘terrible’, it helps to use the power of suggestion.

I really, truly like LA’s, Phoenix’s isn’t bad, and I think Tampa and Ottawa’s wouldn’t be bad with an actual logo and not a nickname.

by EtchedInCold on Jan 25, 2011 1:09 PM CST reply actions

yeah, the round logo thing is driving me nuts. 5 out of 28 teams using the same logo template. It’s just.. bad.

I kind of like Phoenix’s, but I really like the howling logo on their current jerseys, so this one is slightly worse and doesn’t add a ton for me.

The Penguins’ light blue drives me bonkers, partially because it was the one whose sales inspired a lot of the same designs and partially because I simply hate baby blue on a hockey jersey. I know it’s a throwback, but baby blue was a terrible idea in the 60s as well.

by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 25, 2011 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

i wont lie, i did like their winter classic jerseys where the penguin actually has the scarf

by mikerlz on Jan 25, 2011 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

There’s a lot of shitty third jerseys out there, but a lot of them are actually pretty damn good. The LA, Chicago, Oilers, Nashville, and Vancouver ones in particular are better than most primary’s in the league (granted, three of the five are throwbacks, but they still rock.)

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jan 25, 2011 2:07 PM CST reply actions

I like Vancouver's

and I actually prefer Phoenix’s to their regular ones. But indeed some of them are less pleasing (I am no fan of the Penguins’ one and Florida’s annoys me because for some reason when they wear it I think they are Pittsburgh at first).

This is a time where I wish I was proficient at any of the software that could pull this off, or artistic enough to come up with a good idea. I had one idea, but I have no idea how to do it in one of those programs.

he has to sit at least 1 game or lil gary will suspend him

by Red, White and a Mile high on Jan 25, 2011 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

You have a lot more faith in Gary's ability to enact punishments on a consistent and fair basis than I do.

Although if he misses the last game before the break, that is enough right? Isn’t the rule that they are supposed to sit either the one before or the one after to show that the injury was truly substantial?

But that’s interesting. I thought he was having problems with his knee again and that is why he missed the last couple of games- that would be a perfectly reasonable excuse, no need to disclose his sinus issues.

Another OT

Nabby has been suspended by the Isles

by mikerlz on Jan 25, 2011 3:58 PM CST reply actions

Dick move in my book

Suspend a guy because your crap team ganked him from a team he wanted to play on via a poorly constructed rule and he didn’t want to go for it.

As far as I’m concerned you should consider it a gift if you can pick up a quality player off of that shit waiver rule, not a right.

by Rat A Tat on Jan 25, 2011 4:21 PM CST up reply actions

What should the Islanders do?

Nabby’s agent said that he’d play for whomever claimed him. He could bring a lot of value to any club looking for a goalie, considering his pay is ridiculously small.

I blame his agent for saying he’d play for anybody and I blame Nabokov for letting his agent say that.

As for the re-entry waiver rule, I’ve thought long and hard (heh) about how to change that to benefit guys who were victims of a bad free agent market without allowing teams to bring in ringers from Europe for a playoff run and I can’t think of a way that doesn’t put the sickening feeling of allowing the league commissioner the judgment to say when it is a violation of the spirit of a tough-to-write rule and when it isn’t.

Bottom line is that I’d rather keep teams from bringing in mid-season ringers and screwing other people out of jobs. If it means that they’re less likely to sign guys and teams that do sign players are going to miss out, then that’s a lesser evil to me than treating the Euro-leagues like a conditioning stint that teams don’t have to pay guys for.

Unforunately, I also don’t think Nabby or his agent can tell all 30 clubs “Don’t claim me or I’ll sit out” because that’s an outright violation of the spirit of the CBA and would likely get Nabby suspended by the league anyway. If Nabby wanted an NHL job with a contender, he should have signed for $570k at the start of the season instead of asking for $5-6M and then bolting to Russia to play for his tax-free millions and deciding mid-season that he wants to come back.

by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 25, 2011 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

Tell all 29 clubs, naturally…

I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have called the Wings and asked them not to claim him off waivers they put him on… that would be silly.

by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 25, 2011 5:13 PM CST up reply actions

Nabby should fire his agent

if only for not explaining how re-entry waivers apply to his client.

Nabokov would be far better off to show up, suit up and play his backside off for the Islanders. Garth Snow would be an idiot to not try and showcase Nabokov for the next month and make a strong case to a playoff / bubble team of how Nabokov could be a solid (and affordable) piece of the puzzle. Also, one that would bring a solid return in terms of a player, prospect and/or pick.

Maybe I am giving Garth Snow too much credit, but I would hope he knows that Nabokov would run at the end of the season from Long Island. In the midst of the suspension posturing, he should call Nabokov, explain the situation (how he would move him to a contending team for players/prospects/picks) and let the chips fall where they may.

by ChuckinNux on Jan 25, 2011 6:06 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

I’m wondering if Snow and Nabokov have even spoken. If Nabby still isn’t answering his phone, then Snow had no choice but to suspend him (rather than pay him and keep him on the roster for not showing up).

If, however, Snow is pissed off about the whole being hung up on thing, then he’s being a big baby and needs to try to get Nabby in an Isles uniform to see what he can do.

However, as far as the trading thing goes, the Isles can’t trade him this season without putting him through waivers, which would mean that he’d definitely get picked up for free. Best Snow could get out of Nabby this year is the right to negotiate before July 1st after the season is over.

Also, even if he does clear waivers, Nabby has a no-movement clause in his contract, so he’d have to approve any trade (which he might do if it’s to a contender).

Yeah

Garth Snow…what else can we expect (although it was within his rights…)

I'm just waiting to hear Snow's request that the NHL toll Nabokov's contract.

I won’t be remotely surprised. It may be a dick move, but honestly Nabokov is only hurting himself. The longer he is out of professional hockey, the harder it will be for him to convince a decent team to pick him up, especially at a satisfactory salary (I am willing to bet he would not have agreed to such a low payment for anyone but the Wings, only because it was worth the potential exposure he would get playing behind a strong team and that was all they could offer him and he knew it). I mean, the way I see it, if he would just show up and play behind the Islanders and show what a strong goalie can do for a struggling team, he has a better chance of getting picked up under more agreeable circumstances for next season. Plus I’m not sure he does himself any favors by making himself look so difficult to work with. He’s being a bit of a diva and I can’t necessarily blame him for feeling the way he does but cry me a river. Come on, pull yourself up by your bootstraps and make the best out of the situation at hand. He set himself up for this by requiring so much money in order to sign with someone in the off-season, no? And he had to know the chances of his contract with the Wings actually coming to fruition were smaller than the chances of the Islanders making a sudden run for the playoffs and winning the Cup.

I don’t really think either side is “bad” for doing what they are doing. They are just asserting their rights- his, not to play, and theirs, to suspend a player who refuses to report. Everyone had some idea of what they were getting themselves into. You could say Snow should just put him back on waivers but then you’d have to say that, in the same sentiment, Nabokov could just ball up and go play the rest of the season with the Islanders to show what he’s capable of. I have no sympathy either way.

by Papusica on Jan 25, 2011 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

You think Roloson wanted to go to the island? No, but he played his ass off, and he got picked up by the Captain. If he just played, he would have that many more doors opened to him.

As long as we're posting lots of interesting OT things

I like this little bit from Eric Staal: “So, you know, obviously goal scoring is a premium in the All Star Game, and goalkeeping, too, and defense.” Um. Staal. That’s everything. Those are all the parts of a hockey team. Well, okay, I guess he left out coaching so perhaps that is less important. These guys are just too much fun when they talk to the press. You can tell they get a bit flustered at times.
