My NHL Fantasy team
Hello again! I just had an ESPN NHL Fantasy draft last night and ended up with a pretty solid team (results after the jump). I'd like WIIM's opinions on my 2nd ever NHL Fantasy draft. Thanks!! The team name is: The KronWALL of Doom. JUMP!!
1 (2). Pavel Datsyuk - A little homerish pick here to start off but I think he'll bounce back to normal form.
2 (23). Jarome Iginla - Best available this point plus he was the only name I could recognize
3 (26). Henrik Zetterberg - Another homer pick
4 (47). Marian Hossa - Yeah I took the Bandwagoner Mercenary, unfortunately. He's the only Hawk I'll have to root for this year
5 (50). The Captain - Homer pick but still couldn't believe he was here for the taking in Round 5.
6 (71). John Tavares - Had him last year and he did some good things for me
7 (74). Jimmy Howard - Another homer pick and breakout candidate, Possible star.
8 (95). Alex Tanguay - Iginla was getting lonely being surrounded by all these Wings so I picked his buddy Alex.
9 (98). Ryan Whitney - Debated on him or Duncan Keith but couldn't stand the thought of having 2 Hawks for root for.
10 (119). Niklas Kronwall - the namesake of the team and pretty good D-man himself
11 (122). Joe Pavelski - Had to pick up a token shark and apparently he was BSA
12 (143) Brad Marchand - No idea who he is besides the fact that he partied too hard and got sent home after the Bruins title
13 (146). Ondrej Pavelec - The token Jet on my team
14 (167). Joni Pitkanen - see Marchand minus the partying tale
15 (170). Wayne Simmonds - Yeah I felt bad for him because of his incident
16 (191). Marc Staal - The token Ranger that will get a megabucks contract from the Rangers bc that's just what they do.
17 (194). Jose Theodore - 3rd Goalie who won't play much on my team.

Some of the picks are pretty good.
Iginla, Tavares, Zetterberg, and Pavelski are really solid especially the overall number. I’m sure you already realize Datsyuk is not a good #2 overall for fantasy value. Generally I don’t like stacking up on one team’s players or picking Centers early just because it’s such a deep position, you can get quality players later. Wingers and Goalies have a much shorter list of elite talent, so my draft board usually grabs a top flight LW/RW/G as quickly as possible. I don’t mean to make this too long but here was my WIIM draft results. I took both the douches (Cooke/Avery) for PIMs, but have since dropped Avery for Andy Greene while Wisniewski is suspended. I rarely ever end up with Red Wings on my team.
Fighting Mongooses
1. (2) Daniel Sedin (Van – LW)
2. (35) Marc-Andre Fleury (Pit – G)
3. (38) Ryan Getzlaf (Anh – C)
4. (71) Marian Gaborik (NYR – RW)
5. (74) Tobias Enstrom (Wpg – D)
6. (107) Alex Goligoski (Dal – D)
7. (110) Andrew Ladd (Wpg – LW)
8. (143) James Wisniewski (Cls – D)
9. (146) Michael Grabner (NYI – RW)
10. (179) Patrice Bergeron (Bos – C)
11. (182) Antoine Vermette (Cls – C,LW)
12. (215) Anton Babchuk (Cgy – D)
13. (218) Devan Dubnyk (Edm – G)
14. (251) Radim Vrbata (Pho – RW)
15. (254) Sean Avery (NYR – LW)
16. (287) Matt Cooke (Pit – LW)
17. (290) Blake Wheeler (Wpg – RW)
I hate Jonathon Ericsson.
I've done my first ever, but I have to agree with Brion on centers
I did my research…unfortunately I was unable to make the live draft and got auto’d…stupid computer picked Henrik Sedin as my first pick, so I missed out on some good top wingers (save Carter, but I think his numbers will drop in Columbus). It’s also good to have at least one high-level D pick and and elite goalie (I got kinda lucky with Vokoun…I think).
My D is in the crapper unfortunately. It’s my first time, but I’m pretty sure my team won’t do well.
You're wrong Mick. That blob may have peanuts, but it ain't no Baby Ruth.
I agree with Brion
You left a lot on the table by going homer in the first round. Who was the first overall? Pavelski in 11 and Pavelec in 13 are your best picks IMO. I don’t think Iginla will be worthy of a 2nd. Ryan Whitney <<< Duncan Keith, simply based on who he plays for. I don’t like the Alex Tanguay pick (I will look like I’m being hypocritical here later, but see the last line of this paragraph for explanation). Simmonds is still a crapshoot, even at 15, and Theodore might get beat out by Clemmensen within the first month. Obviously, I didn’t see the draft so I don’t know how it panned out, but I have the feeling you could have done a lot better by not being so homerish. Drafting Red Wings is fun, if that’s all you want to do. But if you want to draft to win your league, you can’t put on the red-tinted shades. Like Brion, here’s my draft in the WIIM Filppula league for comparison. Also realize this is an autopick draft and I might not have taken a few guys that got selected:
Dubie
1. (5) Steven Stamkos (TB – C)
2. (32) Patrick Kane (Chi – RW)
3. (41) Ilya Kovalchuk (NJ – LW,RW)
4. (68) Christian Ehrhoff (Buf – D)
5. (77) Vincent Lecavalier (TB – C)
6. (104) Kari Lehtonen (Dal – G)
7. (113) Patric Hornqvist (Nsh – RW)
8. (140) Alex Tanguay (Cgy – LW)
9. (149) John Carlson (Was – D)
10. (176) Kimmo Timonen (Phi – D)
11. (185) Jordan Eberle (Edm – RW)
12. (212) Ryan Smyth (Edm – LW)
13. (221) Steve Ott (Dal – C)
14. (248) Trevor Daley (Dal – D)
15. (257) Al Montoya (NYI – G)
16. (284) Magnus Paajarvi (Edm – LW)
17. (293) Derek Stepan (NYR – C)
So, like I said, I wouldn’t have taken Tanguay there, and I also immediately got rid of Montoya in favor of Khabibulin (we’re only using one goalie slot tho, so I can get away with it). I just think you left too much on the table. The team looks ok, just doesn’t really stand out to me.
Regardless, best of luck in your league!
