Morning Skate: The Quest for 12 Begins
Here we are again.
The Expected Lineup
Jiri Hudler -- Pavel Datsyuk -- Danny Cleary
Valtteri Filppula -- Henrik Zetterberg -- Johan Franzen
Justin Abdelkader -- Darren Helm -- Todd Bertuzzi
Drew Miller -- Cory Emmerton -- Tomas Holmstrom
Nicklas Lidstrom -- Ian White
Niklas Kronwall -- Brad Stuart
Jonathan Ericsson -- Jakub Kindl
Jimmy Howard (starting)
Scratches: Fabian Brunnstrom worked in on the top two lines in practice and will most likely be the player scratched. According the Red Wings website, Patrick Eaves (foot) did not participate in the last practice, but is expected to be available for tonight. Expect to see Emmerton scratched if Eaves is good to go. [UPDATE: Eaves will not play tonight.]
Injuries: Mike Commodore (knee), Jan Mursak (ankle)
- Detroit is 15-8-1-0 (W-L-T-OTL) all time against the new Senators (1992-present).
- The Red Wings are 3-3-0 (W-L-OTL) in season openers since the lockout
- Last season, the Wings defeated Ottawa 7-5 on February 2 in the only game between the two clubs. The game featured 5 goals from Johan Franzen.
- Speaking of Franzen, he has 8 goals in his last 3 games against Ottawa. I would suggest that tonight the Wings make sure to feed the Mule.
- The Senators finished 26th overall in the league last year with 74 points. The last time Detroit had 74 points or less was the 1989-90 season where they finished with 70 points. That was the last time the Wings missed the playoffs. To put that in perspective, I was 2 years old then. I'm currently 23.
- Keep and eye on Sens rookie Mika Zibanejad. He has Calder potential and could be a star in this league in the next few years.

4-1 Wings, Datsyuk

I feel old.
I know
I can actually remember that season, because I was 11 and was truly disappointed the Wings didn’t make the playoffs.
It’s weird to me to think that the Wings missed the playoffs with 70 points in 1989-90, before the advent of loser points, and Ottawa only gained 4 more points than that Wings team. I don’t know why this is interesting to me, but it is.
If you feel old, how do you think I feel?
For some on here, I could be their grandmother. I was born BEFORE the “Dead Things” era when the Wings were still winning cups (1954).
Ah, Morning Skate
Hello my old friend.
I predict that Babcock will chew 3 whole packs of gum between puck drop and the final horn.
5-2, Detroit, Franzen
No Muletrick this game, but Mule does get four points and the Power Play and Penalty Kill kick it into gear.
4-1 Detroit, Hank
Z gets a goal and an assist. Hockey is back!
Quest for 12
Shouldn’t that be “5 for #5”? That should be the rallying cry for the team. “5 for #96” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
5 for #5, eh?
I like that.

I was chanting "morning skate" while waiting for the page to load.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Tigers win and now Wings hockey! Since I probably can’t make the game thread tonight, here is my contribution for the start of a classy season:

I hate Jonathon Ericsson.

4-2 Wings
Ian White shines in his debut.
As an addition to yesterday’s quick hits question, I think it’s going to be weird seeing Jaime Heinemann, Paul Maclean behind another team’s bench. Although, I guess we should be proud that other teams keep pulling our assistant’s to lead their team.

Pretty soon..
they aren’t gonna call it the Western division, but instead the Wings Division. That is.. if we lose more to coaching positions.

And the 3 years before that?
09-10: lost to St. Louis 4-3
08-09: lost to Toronto 3-2
07-08: beat Anaheim 3-2 (SO)
View from the Leino Lounge
Update. Ducks just got Leino’d.
and 5-2 wings. Lidstrom goes for 1g 1a.
An even better stat from the Sabres/Ducks game,
Nathan Gerbe laid a hit on Corey Perry! That little guy is one tough cookie. And the score is Buffalo 2, Ducks 0 at the end of the first
Also, the Rangers/Kings are 1-1 at the end of the first; Lundqvist has faced 12 shots already; Quick has only had to face 4. The King is busy in his homeland.
Issue with sbnation?
I can only see the last two posts on the front page. The rest is just blank. Is anyone else having this problem?
Yep
There’s an ongoing issue with the first time people load the page. Just refresh and you should be ok. The IT guys are looking into it.
5-1 Wings, Happy
You can’t go wrong with Pav as your center. LET’S GO WINGS!!!
5-2 Red Wings, Darren Helm
gotta defend my predictions crown :)
Might be a bit until I’m in on a game thread, but here’s to the start of the season, and to it being a great one….and to sharing it all with you hooligans (uttered with all respect due!) again.
LET’S GO RED WINGS!
Eat 'em up, Tigers!
Greetings Wings fans

Interesting Senators fact of the day
Our owner is developing a sexual enhancement drug courtesy of a nasal spray.
Laughing may now commence.

Hey baby, is that the boner-inducing nasal spray in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

The mule will be PotG. It’s Ottawa and mules apparently hate senators (they give asses a bad name).
You're wrong Mick. That blob may have peanuts, but it ain't no Baby Ruth.

I'm just glad I wasn't drinking anything

My keyboard would have been ruined. However, my computer screen might have gotten a much needed cleaning.
Super pumped :-D and rocking my Wings' Jersey :)
Though I want to see Brunnstrom and Eaves – too bad :(
Wings win a 4-1 Datsyukian filled game

Coyotes new slogan.
Did anyone else see that their new slogan is “Hockey the Hard Way”? What about this advertisement banner on their web site.
i kinda like it
i’m pretty sure they meant to do the double entendre. nobody’s that blatantly ignorant of puns.
I wonder if all their broadcasts will now begin with
“Coyote’s hockey, presented by Pfizer”

Oh dear.
If the game lasts more than 4 hours, do they need to call a doctor?

5-2 Wings
Franzen Potg.
If their aren't enough people crazy in this the world would be woefully boring.
Ericcson will be a stable #4-5 in the depth chart by his NEW contracts end. And when looking what the cap will be in three years his contract will be affordable.
make sure you add it to the form in the post so we can keep track of points as the season goes on. Last year’s winner barely eked out a victory for his shirt and you can’t leave points on the table.

Booby Prize
I think I should get the prize cause of the AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL call on Kindl. Clearly Buttman is somewhere in the stadium tonight with a mic link’d to the refs….
