Interest in Iginla?
Hey everyone, long time lurker, first time poster. Jarome Iginla trade rumours are running rampant right now; I just wanted to hear what people think it would possibly cost the Wings to get him. Detroit has a good history (barring Modano) of turning aging vets into important pieces and a shoot first, physical player like Iginla is the perfect complement to our current team makeup of finesse playmakers and speedy grinders. Also, he has abit of a Mark Messier fiery leadership about him, which I think the Red Wings could use once in a while. I personally think Hudler + Mursak/Emmerton + draft pick would work, but Calgary has been known to allow themselves to get fleeced in trades, so it could be for less. Thanks!

I dont know
what others might say about this, but I think he is exactly what we need. I think we need the physical push, and his goal scoring is just a huge plus. However I think the wings will think defense first.
Id personally rather
Nash, bobby ryan, and maybe Semin (if we could get him to stop quitting) over iginla simply because of youth. In saying that he might cost less than any of them also because of his age so i think he would possibly be the best fit from a trade perspective.

Think Washington will see if their new coach can get semin to come out of his slump, I think theyll give it a couple weeks at least with semin unless someone blows em away with an offer. I think Iginla would be a great addition because h honestly I hate to say it but one thing I think we’ve been missing is the kind of leadership qualities iginla brings to the table.

with lids, dats, holmstrom, Z
i dunno if we lack leadership. Thats why ive have been so adamant about getting semin, when he is motivated maybe crosby, dats, and Ovi are better than him but not much after. I think the amount of leadership we do have could turn him into a steal no matter what we give them.

I think we’ve got leadership its just the brand of leadership… I think 5 and 13 are really good leaders who can perform and lead, but theyre both (esp. Pavel – who is my fav player) more laid back, lead by example, calm type leaders. I admit I cant watch a ton of Wings games cus imout of market but I never really thought of Holmstrom or Zetterburg as great leaders, especially Z the last season or two and especially since his performance has IMO declined a bit. I think Iginla would just bring the more hard charging leadership style…. like the OP said, “fiery.” Since I’ve always known a little more abou fooball, you might say that Iginla could be the Ray Lewis to Lidstrom’s Ed Reed.

and by fiery i dont mean like yelling and going Tebwo on people ,but he’ll amp up the physicality quickly and generally I think his leadership style would be a good compliment t owhat we already have o nthe team.

it sure sound like a move the wings would make
especially with lids and holmstrom both possibly leaving after this year and the youth movement that is upon us. I could see it happening

Personally....
wouldn’t like to see give up great young potential like Mursak for an aging Iginla (yeah, I know) despite the fact that they have done wonders in the past. Sure wouldn’t mind having Iginla if it didn’t cost us our up-and-coming talent for his couple remaining years.

As with Alfredsson, I want no part in this if he doesn’t ask to be traded. If Calgary is forcing him out, then I truly hope the Wings don’t even listen to Calgary on moral grounds. We’re good to our players and shouldn’t take part in a future hall of famer being ousted from the city he has supported for 15 years.
That said, I wouldn’t mind getting him. Playing Iginla with Zetterberg would be great. Granted, he is 34 years old now so he is far from young and I would hate to give up any potential building blocks (Tatar, Smith, Nyquist, Mursak, Brunnstrom, etc.) to get him. If Calgary would bite on a deal centering around Franzen, though, I don’t think I could say no.

Just looked at Cap Geek and he has a No Movement Clause. Only way he gets traded is if he approves the trade. So…. that negates my first paragraph.
He’s also $7M this year and next year, which would make him our highest paid player. Not sure I like that, but thankfully it would only be until the end of next season

I agree with his salary part. I wouldn’t want him at that cost either, bu to adress like yo usaid in your first post, I also totally agree that I wouldn’t wan a player if the off-the-ice situation is bad. But, I remember when Tony Gonzalez went to Atlanta after 12 years in KC, no one was mad because they wanted the guy who stuck with them through the hard times and was always a trooper to head somewhere where he had a chance at a championship before his career was over. Now, Iginla obviously means a lot more to Calgary than Gonzalez did to KC, but I think that Flames fans might be just as understanding as Chiefs fans were.
I also have to admit I’ve always been a big Iginla fan. Maybe I’d just love to see him in a Red Wings uni even if it isn’t the greatest idea.

Hudler at this point in his career isn't worth much as a trade chip.
Much as I like what I have seen of Emmerton, I think we may be overrating our young talent a bit (ala Mattias Riitola) for trade purposes.
I think you would have to give up more than that because some other team probably will better that offer . I know he is 34, but there hasn’t been a significant drop off in Iginla’s play.
Not super well-versed in hockey transactions
but what are our chances of landing Parise compared to Iginla? What do you think we might hypothetically offer?
I think Iginla would be an easier “get” simply because he’s not worth as much on the open market as Parise (although Parise is a pending UFA and Iggy still has another year left).
However, both would be blockbusters and Detroit doesn’t have the same kind of bargaining chips as some other teams do. Even if a player wants to come to Deroit, that means dick to a GM who just wants value back.

You'd have to even out salary first...
Not sure what Parise makes a year but I’m guessing its around 4 million? Not sure how much the Wings have left under the cap…but I suppose you’d have to even out the salaries. Emmerton, Helm, and Abdlkater may do it.. You have to put yourself in the other guys situation. What would it take for you to trade Dats or Zetterberg or Howard?…Your not going to accept the other guys 2nd tier players…you need to give to get..
I would absolutely love
to see Iggy in a Wings jersy, I have always respected the hell out of him, but just not for that price. Maybe we could squeeze a year or three out of him when his contract is up after next year, if he’s interested, but we can’t pay him $7M. As for Parise, I’m not to sure if Kenny would do a super long contract without at least a one year deal first just to be sure he fits. With Homer and Bert probably out next year we will have plenty of room for the youth, so I really wouldn’t mind someone older to bridge the gap and be a top 6 guy till the kids are ready (hopefully). I’m still not sure exactly what we’ve got with the youngsters yet but time, of course, will tell. I have faith that our scouts will find (or have found already) the next Wing Superstar forward.
Word from Calgary..
Is that Iginla may have requested a trade. If he did the organization would likely let him choose a shortlist of teams he’d like to go to, and I would bet the Wings would be on it. This would make it harder for the Flames to get a good return as they would lose bargaining leverage with the limited options. As noted, his 7 million could also make him harder to trade- but damn would he be a good fit Detroit. He’s a great community guy and I could see him being a big figure in the area. The Wings have leadership, but it’s sort of smart quiet leadership. Iggy is a good on camera guy for fans.
Ask yourself this question
Then think like the GM for Calgary…Would you take Hudler, Emmerton and Mursak and a 1st round pick for Zetterberg or Datsuyk? Iginla is as good or at least as valuable and the type of player to put butts in the seats and yes most definately would be a huge help in the playoffs but.. Personally I’d think the price is alot higher, I’d want maybe Sheehan and or Smith, Brunstrom, and maybe even Helm if not also a 1st round pick…If that were the price, I’d prob want Moss or a draft pick along with Iginla..
iwould give up smith if ihad to and hudler and mursak and the draft pick to macke this deal . the one thing he would bring to the wings is the sharks would not be blowing snow in jimmy horward face in games beacuse he would not put up with that stuff to his teamates he give the wings that tough ness out a forwerad thathey have not had in long time .
