In which the Red Wings trade for a goalie… " The Production Line
Michael Petrella at TPL has a good talk with Broad Street Hockey's Travis Hughes about the possibility of the Wings acquiring a more solid backup goalie.
Passing the Torch - Detroit Red Wings - News
Jake Duhaime of the Red Wings has a writeup on the impact that Chris Chelios has had on later generations of hockey fans.
Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall among NHL leaders in blocked shots | MLive.com
For those counting, that's 51 more shots blocked than Jonathan Ericsson has.
Wings try to improve road record | Windsor Star
Detroit is usually a very strong road team, but they've struggled away from the Joe this season. They'll look to improve on that tonight in Pittsburgh.
Sheldon Kennedy’s fight continues | The Malik Report
George Malik has a writeup on Sheldon Kennedy, a former Red Wings forward who now advocates for victims of sexual abuse and is believed to be a victim of Graham James'. There are few acts more despicable and inhuman as the kind of stuff James is guilty of doing to the young humans placed trustingly under his care. There is no punishment I can imagine that's fitting enough for a monster who would betray that.
Around the NHL
Crosby out again with concussion-like symptoms - NHL - Yahoo! Sports
We've all heard by now that Sidney Crosby won't play tonight's game in Pittsburgh. Nobody's sure what his status is going to be, as he and the Penguins organization are trying to be as cautious as necessary.
Gary Bettman: The Less of All Evils? " BloggedShots
I present this without comment, but will let you know that there's an argument made here that Gary Bettman is the best commissioner among the four major sports.
Andy Sutton might have a point about suspension appeals | ProHockeyTalk
Let's get this out of the way to start things off: Any Sutton deserved to be suspended and the way he talks about the pace of the game and how split/second adjustments have defined the edge he's played on is patently ridiculous coming from a guy who leaped into another man's head a few days ago. Still, the fact that Gary Bettman is the ultimate decision-maker in suspension appeals is something that should change. Personally, I'd like to see Sutton appeal his suspension and have ten more games tacked onto it because the big idiot felt it a necessary waste of everyone's time to ask for a second look at a dirty act.
Lightning's St. Louis recovering from scary injury near eye | TSN
Marty St. Louis is on the road to recovery after taking a shot in the eye in practice the day he would have reached 500 consecutive games played.
Kings fire Terry Murray; ex-Flyers coach Stevens interim boss - Puck Daddy
This move was overdue. The Kings had completely tuned out Murray and they were absolutely faltering under him. Whichever guy they get to replace him on the long-term is going to have a lot of work in front of him.
Fear the FAQ 2011-12 - Fear The Fin
There is significantly more in this post than you will ever want to know about the Sharks and/or all of the random esoterica at their SB Nation blog, Fear The Fin, but I still found myself reading through the whole thing.
2011-12 Minnesota Wild Compared to Past Teams: Which is a Better Comparison? - Hockey Wilderness
Wild fans have been ranting and wailing against the people who (rightfully) say that their success isn't sustainable this season. Instead of looking at better predictors of team play, they've chosen here to compare Minnesota to the teams who just so happened to be leading the league as of December 12th each year.
Discussion: Alex Auld? Michael Leighton? Scott Clemmensen? Joey MacDonald? Ty Conklin? Who's the backup goalie that you want for the rest of the season and what would you give up to get said goalie.
Don't forget to download the latest episode of WIIM Radio and send your hockey questions to WingingItMailBag@gmail.com for our weekly mail bag this Friday.

Conklin
I still believe while he isn’t the best option, he can be serviceable as a backup. Now, if you want to freak out and say… “what if Jimmy goes down?” … that’s another story. I don’t want Conklin having to start every game. If it came down to that, I’m sure we’d make a move. Right now, we’re fine and I think he can still be average enough to get us by for a few more breaks for Jimmy. Think… we play St. Louis 2 times in the next few weeks. 1 will be a back to back. I’m willing to bet that Conklin gets thrown in the night before when we play Nashville since the Preds just look terrible right now. Sorry, Preds… you aint what you were last year and I’m not scared.

I hate playing against Conklin. He shuts out the wings all the time, so I’m happy to keep in on the pay roll. I’m willing to give him a couple more shots.
Leighton sounds excellent at a couple hundred bucks though, and I have his bobble head (Thank you Norfolk Admirals), so it would be cool if he played for the wings based solely on my bobble head collection.

I'm honestly happy with Joey McDonald
I feel like people didn’t give him enough credit last year, he pulled us through games last year that we should have lost.
And Hell, maybe bringing him up in lieu of Conk, maybe showing him that we have confidence in him might be the only thing he needs to make the jump from AHL star to NHL Back up?
And you guys should make a WIIM FAQ it’d be good for the new comers.

I kind of like them out of a lack of hate for them.
I’m in the same boat as far as being pissed if they hire Carlyle though.
