Trade Rumor 5,376

Paul Stastny. Decent centerman, moves the puck well, young.

There's talk that Stastny could be on the market. Would the Red Wings pursue him?

I think they should. If you look at the Red Wings over the next few years, they're going to be weak in the middle. Tatar and Nyquist are projecting as wingers. Emmerton isn't proving to be more than a 3rd liner, 2nd if the wings paired with him are strong, but the Red Wings are a team traditionally strong up the middle. Yzerman, Federov, Larionov, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Draper, Lang, etc. All we have now is Helm for the future.

Stastny is only 25, signed for $6.6M through 13/14. He comes from a respectable hockey family, plays hard, and knows how to get his teammates involved. He isn't known as being a strong 2 way C, but he's not known as being a slacker either. He'd be a perfect 2nd line Center for the next couple years and be top line when Dats starts to slow down. He would keep Helm at the 3rd line which strengthens the middle for 3 lines. Strength we desperately need right now.

Here's how I see the lines for this year:

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom

Filppula - Stastny - Franzen

Eaves - Helm - Cleary

Abdelkader - Emmerton - Bertuzzi

I don't know who we'd move for Stastny, but whomever it is, Hudler would have to be part of the deal. Abby or Mursak possibilities as well. Colorado isn't going anywhere this year, so they probably want younger players and draft picks.

In 2 years I could see our F lines looking something like this:

Zetterberg - Stastny - Nyquist

Datsyuk - Helm - Tatar

Filppula - Emmerton - Mursak

Abdelkader - Andersson - Eaves

Keeping 2 Centers on the top two lines allows the Red Wings to have 2 faceoff men on both those lines. It seems we get dumped from the circle a bit too often. It will be key in the playoffs. Both of these sets of lines allows the top two lines to stay strong while the bottom two can provide more than enough scoring power while growing future talent.

I don't think Stastny is all world talent, I don't think he can stay healthy enough, but playing alongside Dats, Z, Helm and the rest will give him a chance to play with other playmakers. They each will make the rest better.

I dunno

6.6 mil a year is a bit too expensive imo

Guess what?! I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

If there were some way (and there isn't)

… to cut Stastny’s salary down into the low-5 range, I’d trade for him in a heartbeat, but I just don’t see him projecting out to that kind of value. Based on that alone, I wouldn’t want Detroit to trade for him.

Instead, I’m just going to bury my head back in the sand and pretend that we’re going to get Parise.

by J.J. from Kansas on Dec 16, 2011 1:00 PM CST reply actions

And Weber

And Suter

Guess what?! I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

by greg5897 on Dec 16, 2011 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

Which would be awesome

But if you had to pick between the three, which would you take?

Assuming Lids retires at the end of the year (say it aint so Nick!)

Guess what?! I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

by greg5897 on Dec 16, 2011 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

If I only get one?

I take Weber.

If I can have Parise too, then I change my pick on defense to Suter.

It’s kind of a switch I’ve had as this season has gone along (since I think Weber has outplayed Suter to this point), but I think Suter is cheaper and better defensively while Weber is a better locker room guy.

by J.J. from Kansas on Dec 16, 2011 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

I like

Parise, Suter, and Weber too. But if I had a choice between Parise or Weber or Suter+ (I think we can only get 1 player if Parise or Weber but multiple if Suter) I would take Suter+. I think we can get a decent C and Suter. Someone who can move the puck, play solid in his own end but doesn’t have to be flashy and a scorer. Someone like a Jordan Staal (not a FA yet), Sammy Pahlsson, Jarret Stoll, Paul Gaustad, etc. Someone who can play C for the 3rd and 4th lines. Helm would play C for 2nd and 3rd lines next year. Hank would play W for 1st and C for the 2nd. It would give flexibility to the line changes depending on injuries and scratches and streaks that people were on. The more I think about it, I think Gaustad would be a great pickup for next year. He’s a big body, plays physical, blocks shots. Gaustad and Suter. Good pickups.

That's what I've been wondering because of Emmerton

I get that he’s young, that he’s got some pop, but he really is the most easily upgraded piece of a hockey team. I love Paul Gaustad. He’s tough, he’s got decent hands, can play some PK time, and is a pretty damn good option in nearly every situation.

Him or Pahlsson out of the three you’ve mentioned are definitely solid-er options than Emmerton. But who knows, Emmerton may turn out to be a pretty decent player.

I still think Parise makes the most sense to trade some prospects for

He’s only 27, he’s an elite talent, his skill level is perfectly in synch with what we need (elite goal scoring presence) he needs a new contract that the Red Wings clearly have the cap space for for this year and many more (as no one else currently on the roster is on track to get massive raises).

Plus, add in the fact that Parise has scored over 30 goals every year he’s played in New Jersey (where offenses go to die) minus his rookie season, including FORTY FIVE in 2009-2010, and that’s elite talent at only 27 playing within a system containing all world playmakers in Datsyuk and Zetterberg and and amazing forward momentum defense with Nicklas Kronwall.

I really think that, while it is always a risk to trade away draft picks and prospects, the reality is, when you have the ability to acquire a player of Parise’s caliber, should it arise, then my gut says you should do it, unless the demands are ludicrous.

So, is it worth trading away the assets in order to acquire Parise? IMO yes, only because the core is here forever, their skills are conducive to gelling with Parise’s elite talent, and they secure a young, ultra-talented player.

While the risk is always that the prospects become world beaters, the Red Wings will still have enjoyed a player in his prime while the core of the team remains in their prime, something they don’t get by “waiting for prospects”.

Speaking of centers we could trade for...

It appears the Phoenix Coyotes are inching closer to trading young center Kyle Turris, as a deal could be completed as early as today.
Several reports have linked Turris to a possible trade, with the Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes and Dallas Stars among the interested parties.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reported on his Twitter page this morning that a deal may be imminent.
“Things are heating up on the Kyle Turris trade front. Sources indicate a deal could come down today,” Dreger wrote.

If a deal is close, it won’t be with Toronto, as they have implemented an internal holiday roster freeze that is already in effect.

Turris, 22, signed a two-year, $2.8 million contract with the Coyotes on Nov. 22. He has been held off the score sheet in six games this season.</em>

It’s obvious Turris has a great work ethic and I bet Babs and Kenny would love him

After the shit he pulled, I don’t want to go near him unless he develops Sergei Fedorov talent (covering myself because I know you jerks would call me out on it. haha)

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Dec 16, 2011 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

but I also think greg was joking a little bit there.

Turris has talent, there’s no question about it. But I hate seeing million dollar players who are lazy.

by styks on Dec 16, 2011 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

Whoda thunk

Ottawa would be a “buyer” in December?

by J.J. from Kansas on Dec 17, 2011 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, saw that and got a good laugh. Phoenix managed a coup in that trade. Rudband is one of the better defensive prospects in the league and they got a second round draft on top of that. Not to mention… Turris has all but proven he is a bust. A bust who doesn’t know he is a bust yet. A bust who thinks he is good. A bust who thinks he is worth what non-busts from his draft year are worth. And an idiot to boot.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Dec 18, 2011 3:53 AM CST up reply actions

No on Stastny for this reason alone:

>strong up the middle
>Lang

Your argument is nullified.

Seriously though, 6.6mil cap hit is way out of our ballpark. Dude does not command those dollars at all. I think it’d end up being a huge albatross for the Wings to have someone like that on the roster, when the upcoming CBA probably won’t allow teams to hide players in the minors/overseas if they aren’t performing as a way of dodging the cap hit. With Lidstrom nearing retirement we need to shore up defense first – we’ve got young talent up front, but aside from Brendan Smith our defensive prospects aren’t really blue chip pieces.

by felixcostello on Dec 16, 2011 7:41 PM CST reply actions

I completely disagree

We do NOT have any young talent stepping up as a future C. Noone has showed they’re ready for NHL play next year.

Defensively, we’re fine with what we have. We have Smith, Kindl, Pyett, White, and Kronwall (not to mention Ericsson). Even without Suter or Weber, that’s a solid defensive group over the next 7 years.

We have a ton of wingers. Tatar, Nyquist, Bruunstrom, Abdelkader, Mursak, Eaves, Connor, Miller, Pare, and don’t forget Hudler. Plus we’ll have at least 5 more years of Dats (who will move to Wing like Yzerman did when he gets older), Hank (same), and Val (I think he’ll stay a winger from now on).

At C we have Helm and Joakim Andersson. Jaime johnson is tearing up GRG but he’s already 28. It’s not likely he’ll break into the league that late. I like Aubry’s size, but he seems awful raw. Emmerton is proving he can handle being on the big club, but being able to handle it wouldn’t have made Datsyuk a star. Emmerton needs to show he can do something special (like Helm did) if he wants to be more than a 4th line C.

So I would much rather see Holland bring in a 3rd line C like Larionov was. Protect the puck, play defense, hustle, hit a few guys, play smart.

Stastny would be a great fit because he would allow Dats and Z smooth moves to the wing when they get old, but someone more like Larionov was would be a great fit to play the 3rd line. With that model though, someone has to develop as a #1 C. I don’t see anyone fitting that mold just yet. Maybe Holland views Emmerton in that position and that’s why he’s with the big club this year. I just have a feeling that he’s not the second coming of Datsyuk. Datsyuk was better when he played up the first time. Hopefully I’m wrong about Emmerton. Who ever it is, needs to be found within the next two years.

by styks on Dec 16, 2011 10:48 PM CST up reply actions

If he was cheaper, then yes

And I may be interpreting your words wrong, so I’ll ask for some clarification.

Are you saying you want Stastny as a third line centre? Or as one of our top-2 centres?

The reason I ask is because, while I think Paul Stastny is a great player and is extremely interesting as a trade topic, is that would you really want a third line centre commanding a cap hit higher than Lidstrom?

Like someone said, were he just a little cheaper, I would love to see it. But he’s too expensive for being just a “pretty good” player, not an exceptional one.

by eight_legged_freaks on Dec 16, 2011 11:28 PM CST up reply actions

no I was saying get either a Stastny or a Larionov

Stastny would play 2nd line until Datsyuk turned probably 34. He would then be 1st line.

Someone like Larionov would play 3rd line and Helm would play 2nd. But we’d still have to find a new top line C somewhere.

by styks on Dec 18, 2011 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

I think he's hurt often

because he’s been the ‘go to guy’ on a team that didn’t have anyone else until Duchene. I’m sorry, but Hedjuk is a shadow of what he was. So other teams load up on Stastny and hit him hard. But on a team with so many talented options, I don’t think he’d take as many hard hits.

by styks on Dec 18, 2011 12:17 PM CST up reply actions

Listen, if we're going for anyone on Colorado..

I’m going for Duchene.. dude’s got talent.. I don’t care how many spin-o-rama’s we think he pulls, he scares me every time he’s on the ice. He’s completing an entry-level contract so he may want big bucks this offseason.. but I personally would take him over Stastny.

by kylegroombridge on Dec 17, 2011 1:31 PM CST reply actions

I agree

but even the dumbass GM of the Avalanche has to know that trading Duchene to Detroit would cause their fans to burn down the Pepsi center.

Maybe Forzaberg could return and play for them opening up a spot at center to trade their best player

And you never know. This is the guy who looked at his last place team and decided to trade a 1st round pick for a goaltender still needing a few years to reach his max potential.

Guess what?! I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

by greg5897 on Dec 17, 2011 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

AHAHAHA

That trade never gets old for me. Nor does Colorado fans convincing themselves they didn’t overpay.

by J.J. from Kansas on Dec 17, 2011 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

Chris Stewart, Kevin Shattenkirk and a 2nd for Golfcart, Jay McClement and a 1st? FUCK YEAH

However, they’re excused from that and any other bad trades they ever make when they got world-class goaltender Brian Elliott straight up for Craig Anderson, a shitty goalie whose only accomplishments were playing decent enough for his stellar 2009 team to get into the postseason and a 51 save shutout in said postseason for which all the credit wnet to the defense playing in front of him. Unfortunately they let Elliott walk in the offseason after he posted a stellar 2-8-1, 3.83, .891 for them in the second half of the season, the fucking morons.

Guess what?! I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!

I know the on-ice rivalry is a shadow of what it once was

But I still don’t see any Colorado/Detroit trades any time soon.

Fan of the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings.

no reason not to

with the ‘realignment’…Colorado isn’t going to be relavent for 8 years anyways. They haven’t been relevant for 8 years either.

by styks on Dec 18, 2011 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

You're forgetting someone in your 2 years lines

Franzen. Dude’s unmovable with that contract.

Anyways, I like Stasny, but his contract doesn’t work with us for now.

by shanny14 on Dec 22, 2011 1:53 AM CST reply actions

Franzen is our most movable asset given his cap hit. His cap hit is low enough that just about any team would at least entertain taking a risk on him.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Dec 22, 2011 2:59 AM CST up reply actions

NO WAY TRADE ABBY

We got some cash let’s just get a good free agent and forget about trading away our future. Only one available is Hudler, don’t see anyone else.
