Doing some datamining

I know it's been brought up before, and I've used it as a bit of an excuse for Jimmy's GAA, that the Wings seem to be giving up more shots this season than they have in a long time.  So I decided to pull it all together going back to the last time the Wings missed the playoffs - 89-90.

Season   -   SA/G   -   Result

90 - 31.06 - DNQ

91 - 29.34 - CQF

92 - 27.94 - CSF

93 - 28.79 - CQF

94 - 27.3 - CQF

95 - 25.13 - SCF

96 - 24.15 - CF

97 - 25.25 - W

98 - 25.75 - W

99 - 26.95 - CSF

00 - 26.41 - CSF

01 - 27.06 - CQF

02 - 26.30 - W

03 - 28.74 - CQF

04 - 26.16 - CSF

05 - DNP

06 - 26.53 - CQF

07 - 24.58 - CF

08 - 23.48 - W

09 - 27.67 - SCF

10 - 29.39 - CSF

11 - 29.88 - TBD

A couple notes:

We have never even made the Cup Finals giving up more than 28s/g.

Our average sa/g in the 6 years we lost in the first round: 27.96

Our average sa/g in the 13 years we made it past the first round: 26.09

Post lockout only bumps that up to 26.28

This is the highest our shots against has been since we last missed the playoffs and gave up 31 shots per game.

Before last year, the last time we had given up 2400 shots in a season was 1993 (2419).  We also played 84 games that season.  We're looking to eclipse that number sometime during our 80th game.

When we last won the cup, we gave up only 23.48 per game, 1926 (irony huh).  This year, we're only about 10.5 games from passing that total.

I know it's easy to hang the blame on goaltending, but this team, historically, wins when they play team defense and shut down the opposition.  When we give up shots like we are this year, our goalies are over worked and tired by the time we reach the playoffs.

Now, I haven't looked to see how our playoff opponents fared in each season, so I don't have that comparison (yet).  But the Wings have recently been built around average goaltending and league leading team defense.  When that defense isn't there, the goaltending is exposed.

And, unless the Wings lock it down during the final 2 months, and start really playing some hustling shutdown defense, I hate to say it, but we're going to have a long golf season.
