Matt Cooke says he needs to change....
Call me cynical if you'd like, but I'll believe it when I see it. I have a sense that what he means is he needs to change his technique, not his style.....he has to get better in not getting caught.
The sad part is - he's got some skill. He works hard - he's an excellent penalty killer.
But he's by far the dirtiest player in the league.

I'm going Biblical on this one
Jeremiah 13:23
“Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil.”
New International Version

The thing is
That in the list of people he apologized to, he neglected to mention McDonagh. Until he is sorry for hurting another hockey player, even if it is just by accident he is not going to change. He MAY stop hitting the head, but that will only be to avoid another long suspension.
I get the feeling the league told him he is on his last straw here. They hurt the chances of the Pens making it out of the first round dramatically (No Malkin, possibly no Crosby, no Comrie, no Orpik and Cooke is actually a decent player). I think we can all agree that the league doesn’t come down hard on the Pens very often and they are almost universally accepted as Bettman’s favorites. If they are willing to let the Pens lose in the first round like that, I think it sends a pretty clear message to Cooke that he either changes or he’s done with hockey.

Ok, so Orpik should be back in time. Comrie could possibly be back, though it seems doubtful. Also haven’t heard anything on Crosby since he skated last week which makes me think they are leaning toward sitting him until training camp as a precaution (good for them if they are). So that statement wasn’t entirely accurate.

I think that the only reason they came down on him was because of the fact that it was a headshot. I dont think that anyone has said anything to him about the other cheap shots that he dishes out.
But even the League did say "he's a repeat offender"
5 times, 5 times !!!!! – he’s been suspended previously – and not for most of the dirty blindside hits we’ve all seen in the video.
I think the League came down on him because 1) It’s the 5th f___ing time, 2) The elbow was so f___ing obvious and intentional there was no way to sluff it off as a "normal hockey play, and 3) The GM meeting just concluded and they saw enough head shots to make them all go to the restroom and puke, so they had to do something dramatic.
I have no belief that he’ll change, none. I only hope to God that Pav or Z (or any other Red Wing – for that matter any former Red Wing….even Brett Lebda!) isn’t out there when he does the next dirty deed.
