Storylines for each series after the jump

Star-divide

MONTREAL vs. BOSTON

There is about a 3,000 page history that could be written about this rivalry and one of the more dramatic chapters was written by Zdeno Chara and Max Pacioretty. This is a fierce and brutal rivalry so it should be an entertaining game. Tim Thomas is heading into the playoffs as the heavy favorite for the Vezina Trophy, but will his regular season success translate to the playoffs?

BUFFALO vs. PHILADELPHIA

Philadelphia and Buffalo both had their struggles late in the regular season with injuries and losing games they should have won. Ryan Miller missed time, but is ready to go for round 1 of the playoffs. Is he fully recovered yet and after several games late in the regular season of bad performances, will the Flyers flip the switch back to on?

LOS ANGELES vs. SAN JOSE

This West Coast tilt will be interesting as the Sharks have been playing very good hockey lately and the Kings are without their best scorer Anze Kopitar. Are the Kings in serious danger or will Jonathan Quick be a playoff hero?

schedule for publish

so that’s why some of these posts arrive at some ungodly hours of the morning on the hour . . .

by uvgt2bkdnme on Apr 14, 2011 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Tim Thomas the heavy favorite to win the Vezina? Understatement of the year, right there. One of the best seasons, statistically at least, a goalie has ever had and easily the best since Hasek was dominant in the late 90’s.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Apr 14, 2011 12:02 PM CDT reply actions

I hope that one day Tim Thomas might be another one of the Red Wing’s older-player/hometown-hero acquisitions.

by Rat A Tat on Apr 14, 2011 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

2-3 years from now, coming home to backup Jimmy? Hell yes.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Apr 14, 2011 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

He should win the Hart

RECORD-HIGH saves percentage.

No team benefited more from having one player on their roster than Boston benefited from having Thomas.

by J.J. from Kansas on Apr 14, 2011 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I would agree. But who was the last goalie to win the Hart? Hasek in 98-ish? I don’t think Brodeur ever pulled it off. Maybe Theodore that one year he was unstoppable?

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Apr 14, 2011 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Theodore won it

It’s unfortunate, because the Vezina is basically the Hart for goalies. It otherwise would be TOO easy to give a goalie the Hart, since he’s just about always on the ice for the team.

I just think that Thomas’ historically huge numbers in an era where scoring is on the rise, combined with no real huge front-runner between the forwards (since D-Men don’t win the Hart anymore either) should combine to give it to him.

by J.J. from Kansas on Apr 14, 2011 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I would say there are three front runner forwards. Both Sedins and Corey Perry (the likely winner). At one point, the clear front runners were the Sedins and Kesler. All three were freaking Canucks.

That said, they need to introduce a “Best Forward” award and return the Hart to being what it should be.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Apr 14, 2011 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Three front-runner forwards should help Thomas

Since none of those three are far-and-away ahead of Thomas… Especially since two of them are Canucks.

For the history:

Hasek won it two consecutive years (97+98). The last goalie to win it before Hasek was Jacques Plante in 1962.

by J.J. from Kansas on Apr 14, 2011 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

And yeah, I thought he had, but didn’t remember for sure. Did Brodeur or Roy ever win it? I wouldn’t be surprised either way, honestly.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Apr 14, 2011 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

So which team is going to have the best shot at the upset?

My money is on the Canadians between the three. I just don’t think Buffalo is strong enough to win the series, Miller might steal a game or two but I think that’s it. Also with Boston I don’t know I guess I haven’t really paid to much attention to them, but I just think out of the 3 series going tonight there the weakest of the top seeds.

by Rwings on Apr 14, 2011 12:05 PM CDT reply actions

I am going to go with Buffalo

they are on a nice hot streak right now and Philly is really not playing their best…I think Philly and Boston both win, but Buffalo has a better chance than Montreal based on how the teams have been playing…

by HockeyGuy9125 on Apr 14, 2011 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

Complete and utter BOMB. I reached down to pick up my iced tea when I saw Staal with the puck and when I looked back up I saw Semin’s stick in the air and heard a PING off the back post.

God

Guy scores all of his goals in the 3rd or OT. He just knows thats its time to score and does it. Saved my team a couple times for GWGs this last year in fantasy. Wish the Rangers won. I don’t need the Caps fans to be more obnoxious than they already are…

So Z skated today

I’m thinking he’ll miss game 2 and be back for game 3.

by Rat A Tat on Apr 14, 2011 1:24 PM CDT reply actions

I don't want him rushed back...

If the Wings win game 2…keep him out of game 3 for sure. We need him at a close to 100% level to win the cup and if things are going well against phoenix, there is no need to bring him back faster than he is ready for. If he is only starting to skate today, there is no way he can be close to his normal level of awesomeness by game 3 ( i think, I am nowhere near an expert on injuries, but doesn’t this seem like common sense)

bottom line: don’t rush him back unless things start to go south against phoenix

by HockeyGuy9125 on Apr 14, 2011 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Depends on the injury

If it’s just a sprain, one could go from say, riding on golf cart to get around, one day, to completely healed within a week. Been there, done that (minus the golf cart).

by Rat A Tat on Apr 14, 2011 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's an idea

Let’s all go over to Jewelsfromthecrown tonight to cheer against the Sharks (not FOR the Kings, mind you).

Then, no matter how the game turns out, we won’t comment at all on their site tomorrow.

by J.J. from Kansas on Apr 14, 2011 2:25 PM CDT reply actions

That would make us like Blues fans….

I think I’ll pass.

by Hornecker on Apr 14, 2011 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

does it count if i'm more or less a regular there?

and actually cheer FOR the Kings when they don’t play the Red Wings?

i think it's more

Quick has had bad games more often in the second half of the season. on the flip side, he always bounces back after a bad game. otherwise, i think his average performance is pretty good.

of course, i dont know how accurate my assessment of the stats is; it’s just my perception.

by uvgt2bkdnme on Apr 14, 2011 10:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Boston and Philly both lost? Damnit. That better not mess up my bracket.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Apr 14, 2011 9:11 PM CDT reply actions

The San Jose-Los Angeles series is going to be awesome.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Apr 14, 2011 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

I'm watching as long as I can stay awake.

As a reminder (since I didn’t see anybody else report it), if you see a head shot (like the Jarret Stoll board on Ian White), please report it in the This Week in Head Shots form.

I’m afraid that I missed some last night between the Preds and Ducks too.

by J.J. from Kansas on Apr 14, 2011 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

will try to remember

i would’ve considered the Stoll hit as more of a boarding incident than a headshot, so i myself wouldn’t have reported it.

by uvgt2bkdnme on Apr 14, 2011 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

It definitely was boarding

And I did say to use your own judgment, but I’d ask that people err on the side of overreporting rather than under. It looked like he hit White directly in the head. Even if he hadn’t, I’d take a boarding penalty that involves a guy going head-first into the glass as a head shot.

Kings first goal

Logan Couture took shooting lessons from Jason Williams

by uvgt2bkdnme on Apr 14, 2011 10:26 PM CDT reply actions

so it looks like the Kings haven't left behind their regular season habit

of letting the opponent right away get back the goal the Kings scored

by uvgt2bkdnme on Apr 14, 2011 10:30 PM CDT reply actions

bad goal for bad goal

Couture, Williams. Quick misplays Couture’s shot; Sharks get crossed up behind their own net.

by uvgt2bkdnme on Apr 14, 2011 10:41 PM CDT reply actions

I can't decide what the fact that he Sharks aren't up 5-0 should be telling me.

The Kings aren’t playing that well through two, but the Sharks are not pouring it on. But, I will say that Quick has played fairly decent (2nd goal notwithstanding).

The Sharks should be able to sweep the Kings – I’m hoping and praying against that, but the fact that this game is tied through 2 gives me hope.

by J.J. from Kansas on Apr 14, 2011 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

how did the Kings score their two goals?

on an odd-man rush off a terribly missed shot attempt at the other end, and a horrible miscommunication behind the Sharks’ net.

so for now, the Kings are making the most of their opportunities—i haven’t checked numbers, but from the looks of the JtfC comments, the Kings were being outshot big time—while they also ended the second period with momentum and some control over the game. it probably would have helped if i had seen the Sharks’ first goal (since apparently it happened pretty early in the game) and how the Kings reacted.

by uvgt2bkdnme on Apr 14, 2011 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

The first goal was just shell-shock on the first shift. There wasn’t really much of a reaction at all. Basing it off the very first shift is hard, but for a physical team like the Kings, it was a bit weird to see them not running every Shark they saw.

by J.J. from Kansas on Apr 14, 2011 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

both sides

aside from a few big hits, i’m inclined to think that this game’s been less physical than expected, especially comparing to the third period i saw from Coyotes/ Red Wings.

by uvgt2bkdnme on Apr 14, 2011 11:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Glad to see

so far in the third, I’d say LA is outplaying the Sharks. San Jose is starting to look a bit frustrated.

by J.J. from Kansas on Apr 14, 2011 11:15 PM CDT up reply actions

San Jose with their first flurry of the third

probably what a lot of people were expecting. i think all three of LA’s forwards were caught as the puck left, so not back pressure led to a scoring chance and the rest of that shift. first time all period.

Watching VS. graphics...

and explain plays, is like watching a dog do differential equations.

Seriously, that sucked.

by sprout42 on Apr 14, 2011 11:20 PM CDT reply actions

They’re better than they used to be… I think their analysis of plays is better. They’ve had some pretty good replays and recaps of why penalties were called. But someone pulled tried to do some graphic crap and it just threw some dots on the screen and then the screen was changing colors and flashing, but it looked like they meant it… it was bad.

Speaking of crappy production of NHL games, did anyone notice NBC’s strange Datsyuk (and one for the blackhawks… Toews probably) timer on Sunday’s game? What was up with that?

by sprout42 on Apr 14, 2011 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

i'm already insane enough to be willing to stay up for Kings/ Sharks

but seriously: if any game has to go to overtime, can it not be this West Coast game? come on, teams, you’ve got 5 minutes.

by uvgt2bkdnme on Apr 14, 2011 11:31 PM CDT reply actions

I don't know why I'm watching this game

mmm, playoffs…

but seriously, of all the series going on I’m not that into this one.

I should be sleeping.
