Unofficial Saturday Open Thread 4-30-11
One series gets started, another picks up where it . . . left . . . zzzzzzzz
Boston Bruins (3) at Philadelphia Flyers (2)
Time: 3:00EDT
TV: CBC, NBC, RDS
Starters: Tim Thomas (Boston), Brian Boucher (Philadelphia)
Nashville Predators (5) at Vancouver Canucks (1)
Time: 9:00EDT
TV: CBC, Versus, RDS
Probably Starters: Pekka Rinne (Nashville), Roberto Luongo (Vancouver)
In an attempt not to play up the rematch of the historic comeback of Philadelphia against Boston, this instance will be the only mention I will make of it in this post. The goaltending matchup definitely favors Boston after the merry-go-round that is currently going on in the Philadelphia net. For all the questions against the Flyers in goal, I have to think that they're all--Boucher, Bobrovsky, Leighton--capable of winning games behind the Flyers offensive corps. One interesting stat: Boston has yet to score a power play goal.
Nashville was completely outplayed as most of us saw in Game 1, save for their savior Pekka Rinne who stepped up big time in the wake of his horrible-looking stats against the Ducks. Mike Fisher, Patric Hornqvist, David Legwand, Shea Weber, and co. are going to have to be very efficient with their scoring chances and start burying them if they intend to have games like Game 1 where the Canucks assert their dominance in all three zones.
Comment away and enjoy the games!

slow start for Philadelphia
just picked up their game after Briere scored after Horton lost his check. now that both teams seem to have their legs under them, the rest of the game should be entertaining, though it’s been a bit less physical than i was expecting.
Damn, Briere scored?
He’s been on fire the last couple of games…

you know who's not on fire?
this Boston power(less) play. unless they score in the next 20 seconds
Still haven't scored, huh?
They seem to be doing OK without it, but if you wanna win the Stanley cup, you’re gonna need a good PP

Yes!
I hate Philly, so as long as Boston wins, I’m fine…

i'm indifferent
i think i picked both teams for different brackets, so i really don’t care much who wins as long as it’s the bruising hockey that’s been expected.
the officiating is really starting to piss me off
a few years ago, i thought the NHL was the best officiated of the big 4. now it’s joining the ranks of the lower 3 in terms of quality of officiating.
Hell, even baseball's starting to look better than the NHL

i think that's 0-for-4 on the power play for Boston
don’t know if they’ve had four opportunities, but they’re definitely 0fer.
power play for the Flyers
3
But yeah, they suck

what a stop by Thomas!
quick whistle because the puck was never covered, but the puck was on the one side, and the referee was on the other
"and that's why Gregory Campbell's so valuable to this team"
because he’s Collie’s nephew?

so now i'm looking stupid
Flyers defense has been porous so far, but Boucher’s performance still didn’t look very inspiring.
i'm out
gotta prepare for a chorus concert. enjoy the game and the rest of the thread, everyone!
Rest/Rust goes 0-4
It looks like the teams with the least amount of rest will take all of the first games in the second round. I am interested to see what Vancouver looks like tonight.
Seven goals on 33 shots

i'm actually banking on the preds...
they had all cylinders firing on defense last time, they just need to suck less on offense this time.
they’re one team that could care less about being outplayed on most of the ice, as long as they can get one or two past them.

Rofl...
maybe Pekka can double down and score one tonight. he’s winning everything else for them. faceoffs, challenges along the boards, fights, passing, thumb wars.

by Lords of Olympia on Apr 30, 2011 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions
That would actually be pretty sweet.
if they didn’t also need Pekka to block shots.
also, and no disrespect, but i love that, in a convo about Pekka Rinne, “Lindback” is the tough name.
;)

It's easy for me to remember Rinne 'cause he's won me a couple fantasy leagues.
Lindback on the other hand, hasn’t. So fuck him
ha ha...
i can definitely respect that.
if he’s not wearing the right sweater, he better damn well be ready to pull fantasy weight. too bad rinne has been too awesome for nearly anyone else to matter in fantasy hockey. selfish bastard bein’ all good and stuff.

HAHAHHAHAAHAHAH
seeing those four comments pop up at the exact same time and imagining you guys actually saying them to my face (as opposed to responding to my comment) just made me laugh.
i kind of figured the thread would be slow today considering one wasn’t up for the Boston/Philadelphia game, and even then, it was just DetroitSports and me for a while.
You know what?
If I was a Nucks fan who lived near the arena and got offered free tickets, I wouldn’t go. That’s how fucking boring this game is. We could finally be looking at a potential 100 OT game.
ha ha...
at this point, i kinda wish that would happen.
might take a bit a polish off the ’nuck’s varnish. soften ’em up for the conference finals.

imagining the next round
“NO WAY BRO! THERE’S SCORING IN THIS GAME?! AND YOU CAN SCORE, LIKE, 3 OF THEM?”
thankfully
you probably don’t have to worry about that until Game 5. but at this rate, a game 5 probably won’t be necessary, so you’d be thankful.
just imagine what the games in Nashville would be like.
at least
in nashville, they’ll have barbecue and tailgates and beer and stuff.

It's funny that there are no Preds fans at today's game but there'll be nothing but Nucks fans when the series shifts to Nashville
sigh...
i wish that weren’t true.
so much. i appreciate fans willing to travel.
but man… maybe it’s just because the canucks have been so high profile this year.
it just hurts to see their jersey everwhere.

was that a scoring chance for Erat?
i forgot what those looked like
It's hard to believe that Danny Sedin won the scoring trophy when watching this
And as soon as I right this Nashville craps the bed
hopefully
they can even it up.
"I'll smile in June."
by Lords of Olympia on Apr 30, 2011 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions
i don't know what Nashville fans think
methinks subtracting Erat is adding something to the Nashville team
you're kidding me Nashville
you get a three-on-one and THAT’S the “scoring chance” you get?
And this time instead of his chest Fishy puts it into Luongo's legs
Also it’s should be noted that Nashville doesn’t know how powerplays work.
the other team is supposed to score
am i doing this right, coach?
the worst part
is that’s actually the trick with lu-o.
if you can catch the nucks defense sleeping, lu gives up pad rebounds pretty often.
how do you fail to do that? how?!

also, why doesn’t Weber or someone just load up from center ice?
though, maybe when he gets back to nashville...
