So today, a player was sent to re-entry waivers. I will first go through this players vitals:
Age: 29
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 186
Pos: G
Led his team to the Stanley Cup Finals last year
Has one year left on contract
Yep, I'm talking (once again) about Michael Leighton.
Here's the kicker. If the Wings claim him (which I endorse they do, for reasons I'll get to in a minute), they cannot play him until next season.
Now, why should we do this? Well, we need a dependable backup for Jimmah next year. I think Ozzie's time is done, Mac is still an AHLer to me, and none of Pearce/McCollum/Larsson seem to be NHL-ready. Leighton has proven himself extremely effective at the NHL level and would provide a goalie the guys could be confident in when he's between the pipes. Most importantly, though, is the fact that we would get him at half price. For you number crunchers, his full salary is $1.55m, meaning we would get him at a paltry $775K. That is a GREAT price for a backup/1B goalie. We all know how much the Wings like to spend on the goalie position, and this would certainly let them do that. It would also provide another year of seasoning for Pearce and McCollum, and Larsson if he decides to come back to North America.
The only reason I can see why Kenny would NOT do this is if he thinks Mac is going to be the backup. Other than that, to me, this is a no-brainer. The chances of signing a player of equal-or-better caliber at that price are miniscule.
So, with all that, thoughts?
