PrintI feel that there is no doubt that Jimmy Howard is the wings goalie for a couple years now. I'm not completely sure about our backup at the moment, but i think the Macdonald played good for the few games he played. Also Osgood will probably retire which is a decision i would agree with. Ozzy has had a spectacular career achieving 3 Stanley cup victories but i do think it is his time to go. During the post season i don't think Howard had one moment where he played bad. He was giving 110%, 100% of the time. Jimmy looked like he really wanted to win it all and played that way. If we can stay away from injuries with him then we will have solid goaltending. A problem i see is that if the red wings don't become a serious Stanley cup contender then Howard may consider joining another team, leaving us with Joey Macdonald as a starter. I do not think that is a situation that Holland wants to address anytime soon. On the other hand if we become a team that shows up for every game and become a team that is a favored cup winner every year then all the right things will fall into place from there. Most importantly if we have a good offense & defense to back up Howard, then around this time next year we will be watching the wings in the conference finals

Joey Mac is not a permanent solution behind Jimmy. Not with McCollum waiting in Grand Rapids and Larsson reportedly wanting to return to the organization after his little tirade. At one point, most considered Larsson our goalie of the future, not Jimmy. I would not be surprised if Joey Mac stays for one season and then Larsson is put into the backup role.
I think Ozzy tries to come back
He ended last season, what, 4 wins shy of his idol Grant Fuhr? That’s gotta be eating at him, and if he can get back in backup shape this summer, I see him trying to get those last few wins and go out the way he wanted, not hanging them up because his now-porcelain groin gave out.

I think Ozzie gets an invite to Training Camp
If he makes the team great, then he’s the backup – for the same $$ that Joey Mac got this year. Ozzie has always said that it’s all about the Wins for him – I’m sure he’s got enough $$, so he’ll work out something with Kenny H that’s incentive based and small on Cap Hit.
They may try to put Joey Mac on waivers and get him to GR, but as others have pointed out, Larsson and McCollum are already there, so idk….we’ll see.
Larsson isn’t back yet. We own his rights, though, so if he wants to come back to America, he has to play for the Griffins/Wings.

You see… that’s an issue in and of itself. Ozzy has stated for a few years now that his goal is Fuhr. Fuhr was an idol of his and it was his dream to be up there with Fuhr and to pass him on that list. What if Jimmy gets injured a month in and Ozzy starts for a few weeks. He’ll get those couple of wins real quick and… what? Will he have any desire left? I love Ozzy, I really do. My first article on here was arguing that his jersey should hang next to Nick’s and Stevie’s. I just am not sure he would have any drive to do it after that. I really do not think we should make him our backup again.
Not to mention we have no idea how he will heal up.
