Rafalski to Retire? So Says Nick Kypreos
Sportsnet.CA's Nick Kypreos reports that "sources" tell his network about an impending declaration from the Red Wings that defenseman Brian Rafalski is retiring this summer.
Here's to hoping they're wrong.

As a reminder
Rafalski’s contract was signed before he turned 35, so his cap hit would come off if he retired. Only contracts signed after the age 35 cutoff count towards that rule.

A good reminder
If he retired and his cap hit still counted, the Wings would be sorta, kinda royally screwed.

Wow..i'm saddened... and shocked (if true)
I can’t imagine he’s healthy. The back problems he has been having seem to have been nagging him – it was noticeable in the playoffs as well…
I hope the news / and sentiments are wrong – still an awesome player w/ great breakout passes.
tho 6m cap hit could go a long way towards getting weber… ;)
Heres hoping Rafalski stays!

Curious
I’ll be keeping my eye on this. It’s not a stretch, when you consider his injury issues. I wonder if his back/groin (the two biggest problem areas it sees for him) are preventing him from performing at a level he’s comfortable with.
Haven't been a fan
of his play the past year. Some beautiful, long breakout passes – yes. But also, a lot of turnovers.
Kindl and Smith just got saucer eyes at the thought of all the ice time and money that would be freed up for them.
Kindl and Smith are both under contract through the next two seasons, so no money is freed for them. It’s actually freed to pay for the guy who’s going to play instead of them.

Rafi's knee...
remember he’s been playing bone-on-bone with a brace for years now, too.
Imagine health issues have caught up with him…knee, back, groin…just doesn’t think he can overcome it and doesn’t want to be liability…the true Red Wing soldier.
Would be sad to see him go…after all he was the only US Red Wing 2010 Olympian.

wow...did not see this coming
did a lot of good for us over the past few years…but that is a lot of money for Ken Holland to play and make some magic with
Hopefully this will allow Holland to take a look at Kaberle.

Possibilites
Some unrestricted free agent defensemen from CapGeek. In no particular order just one’s that caught my eye:
Bieksa, Ehrhoff and yesterday’s playoff hero Sami Salo from Vancuover?
Steal Eric Brewer from Stevie Yzerman?
Chronically injured, but fantastic power play performer Andrei Markov from Montréal?
The tough, but fair Ed Jovanovski of Windsor?
Not sold on Bieksa, but I kinda like Ehrhoff.
I’d very much like to get Eric Brewer. I have noticed him A LOT in the playoffs this year.
I think Markov could do well in Detroit. I think I’d be willing to take the risk.
Ed Jovanovski is all but done. Unless he’s willing to cut his salary to less than half, I’m not interested.
Wisniewski is also considered a puck-mover with some grit – I just don’t like his attitude.

Brewer's been solid for the Bolts, especially on PK. I'd definitely be happy to see him land in Detroit

I don't trust Markov at all
Not after watching him spend seemingly the past 3 seasons on the IR the whole time
"I don't think you're happy enough. I'll teach you to be happy."
I'm thinking...
…that he’s probably not healthy enough to play the role and minutes the Wings (or anyone else) would need him to play.
Also, this makes me think signing Big E is almost inevitable, but I will cringe if it’s more than 2M-2.5M per year. That being said, Kindl and Smith are going to get some good looks, and I think even guys like Pyett will have a chance to rotate in to about 15 games this year.
The big question – what do we do with his cap hit? A goalscorer, or a solid 2nd pairing defensemen? Do we use it on some depth too? A backup?
This has an effect on a lot more than just his spot in the lineup now.
Wings already needed to make moves on D
Although I might not mind an offer sheet thrown Zach Parise’s way.
What gets lost in this is that Rafalski could rehab and then mentally check out for a season to draw a $6M salary. If he retires, leaving that cash on the table, he’s really doing the entire club and the fanbase a HUUUUGE favor.

sorry to say
but tsn has confirmed that rafalski is retiring. Great d-man, led the devils in 2000 and 2001 to cups (yeah stevens and neidermayer were around) and led detroit to that cup in 2008. I wish him the best. Looks like christian ehrhoff will be on detroit’s radar.
Sad but I really hope Wisniewski becomes a Red Wing now
I loved Brian for what he did for this team. He was a phenomenal player and his career was plagued with some troublesome, never ending injuries.
Thanks for the memories Brian. Great career.
Now let’s sign Wisnewski and Bieksa.

WOW!!! i didn't see this coming
I knew he has been having issues with his health the last couple of years…when healthy Rafalki is one of the best puck movers in the game. This saddens me.
I REALLY REALLY hope Lidstrom comes back now. I also really hope they don’t break the bank on big E too.
It will def be interesting to see what they do with the $6 Mil coming off the books…i know there is a lot of talk about Weber but isn’t he a RFA? Lets not forget that Modano and his 1.25 are gone too. I wonder what they will do with Rusty? Draper and Ozzie?
Thanks for the year Red Wings!! Come back strong in 2012
Well hope the Wings can get their money's worth.
Sad to see Rafalski go but what good is the money if you can’t function on a day to day basis. Cap space is looking better for future moves. If we can’t sign a star 6 million defensemen how about two good 3 million dollar defense or a variation there of?
Kind of a shock
Rafalski’s been great, the fact that he’s planning to retire is kind of surprising.
But I guess the younger the defense, the better. Hopefully we’ll pick up some great defenders in the summer.
by forever_rednwhite on May 23, 2011 6:47 PM CDT reply actions
If the cap moves to the projected $62 million, we should have only $41 million tied up. That’s $21 million in cap space. Holland gets to spend big for the first time in the cap era.
Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Bertuzzi-Filpula-Franzen
Cleary-Helm-Abdelkader
Hudler-?-?
? – Stuart
Kronwall – ?
Kindl – ?
Howard
?
So we need a fourth line for sure. That likely means that Miller and Eaves are both back (especially now that we have more cap room) and we will either go with Drapes again, assuming he doesn’t retire, or pull from the Griffins. We could make a play for a John Madden or Andrew Brunette, but I doubt we would. They may demand too much for it to be worth it.
Hopefully Lidstrom resigns, otherwise we are screwed here. We definitely need to sign a top 4 defenseman either way. If Lidstrom retires as well, though… I really think we have no choice other than to make a play for Weber. And that isn’t just my unnatural love for the man speaking there… he is the best available and the only free agent I feel would make a great Wing.
If we don’t get Weber and the unthinkable happens, who else can we go after? I don’t feel comfortable with Stuart and Kronwall being our top pair with Ericsson (Rafi retiring is the best thing that could have happened for him) and Kindl on the second line. Do we push Smith onto the ice before he is done ripening?
lets not rule out Hudler being traded just yet...a suckers born everyday.
Mursak will for sure be called up from GR…Its going to be one interesting off-season.
Thanks for the year Red Wings!! Come back strong in 2012
Mursak has to be up next year
His contract becomes a one-way deal, so he will either be on the Wings or he’ll be waived (like Ritola last year). Personally I think this retirement is the beginning of a slow overturn of the roster. I think the Wings can use this opporunity to get a player in to the lineup that is younger (not a rookie, just a mid-20s guy) who will be more well-rounded than Rafalski is.
*cough*weber*cough*
On a sidenote, I love how everyone has joined my Shea Weber bandwagon. It took almost a year for it to happen, but it’s amazing how quickly this comment caught on and now we all want him as a Wing. haha
by Apocalyptic0n3 on May 24, 2011 7:04 AM CDT up reply actions
I’d love to see Shea Weber in red and white, but the chances of that are extremely slim. Weber is the first legitimate home-grown superstar the Predators have ever had, and if they let him walk (to a division rival, no less), they’d be sending a message to their fanbase that they are not willing to do whatever it takes to build a winner. There are very few scenarios out there where the Wings make an offer to Weber that is not matched by the Preds.
However, the Wings could do to Nashville what San Jose did to Chicago last year in that they could put out a ridiculous offer to Weber, have the Preds match, putting the Preds in salary cap problems (since they’re not a team that spends to the ceiling) that could cause them problems when Ryan Suter is a UFA after next year.
Weber would be nice, but I’d expect Corey Perry to win a “Most Attractive Human Man” contest before I’d expect Weber to sign with the Wings.

I know it is unlikely, but Ken Holland has $21 million to play with this summer if Rafi retires. I have to imagine he could pull something off with that kind of money.
And I know my man-crush for Weber will never amount to anything, but I’m not giving up hope. He seriously is the ideal Wing.
by Apocalyptic0n3 on May 24, 2011 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
First and foremost, it’s about Lidstrom. Once he decides what he’s going to do, then the rest of the pieces can fall into place.
I think the Wings can find a decent UFA d-man (Erhoff), for around $3-4M per year that will bring the same skills to the table that Rafalski does.
Until Weber signs a long-term deal with Nashville, anything is possible.
by Amerinadian on May 24, 2011 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions
Man...
… can’t decide how I feel about this. Gotta let it sink in.
First thought was that we’re gonna miss a d-man who shoots right. They’re pretty hard to come by. I know our team has a crap ratio as far as players who shoot left over players who shoot right.
Actually, I think everyone shoots left except for Rafalski and Eaves, if I remember correctly.
Rafalski WAS a great offensive defenseman, but...
He clearly isn’t anymore. This is good news for the Wings IMO. A 6 million dollar defenseman needs to play top-2 minutes and Raffy was basically on the 3rd pairing. His injuries seem to have caused a drastic decline in his performance. He can’t get pucks through to the net anymore and causes a lot of turnovers. I like the guy, but I’ve been hoping for this all season. We need a younger defenseman who is more well-rounded. I love Andrei Markov but he’ll essentially bring the same risk that Rafalski had. The options via FA I guess are Pitkanen, Ehrhoff and Brewer. If we think Kronwall is ready to take a larger role and Lidstrom returns then any of these 3 would be decent additions.
You do realize
that no defenseman in the entire league had a higher points-per-game rating than Rafalski, right?
The only marked effect that injuries had on his offensive output was keeping him out of games with his scoring pace. He easily would have won the points race if he had gotten in 80 games.
by J.J. from Kansas on May 23, 2011 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions
I realize that he managed to rack up quite a few assists playing on one of the best offensive teams in the league, many of which came on the PP. But it was pretty clear to me that for the most part he was not anywhere near as good as he was 2-3 years ago, and he was just bad in the playoffs. How can a team pay a guy 6 million to play 19-20 soft minutes a night, be a turnover machine, not kill penalties and not be a shooting option on the PP because he can’t shoot?
many of which came on the PP
31 even-strength assists led the team.
by J.J. from Kansas on May 23, 2011 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions
It led the team among defensemen, but certainly not the whole team. Besides, that doesn’t really refute what I wrote. Again, I like Rafalski and he was instrumental in the 08 Cup, but he’s just not the same, is not worth 6 mil. and his contract was hampering Holland from making any significant additions.
That said...
I will admit that his play hasn’t “drastically” decline, but it has noticeably declined.
I'm not saying that Rafalski wasn't/isn't overpaid
But to start the whole rant off that he’s not a good offensive defenseman was a bit off. Rafalski proved he could still put up a ton of points.
He’s just not been a good defensive defenseman. We’ve known that for three years now. Pairing him with Ericsson all season didn’t help that a ton either.

Lidstrom..
i wonder what salary he will take if he comes back again…now that Rafalski is gone i wonder if he would take something in the $5 mill range…not to mention that Kronwall was playing a heck of a lot more minutes in the post season.
Thanks for the year Red Wings!! Come back strong in 2012
His Salary will be $6M
If he comes back, his contract is guaranteed. The CBA does not allow teams and players to renegotiate contracts, even when retirements are involved.

Doesn't matter
It’s not like Ken Holland is going to lowball Nick Lidstrom just because Raffi retired. If Nick wants to come back, he’ll get the 6M he got this year, maybe even a small raise if there’s an impending Norris in his future.

I would assume they go into every offseason with a contract already drawn up and agreed to and just wait for Nick to sign it or not.

James Wisniewski anyone?
http://www.mynhltraderumors.com/2010/06/01/2011-unrestricted-nhl-free-agents/
i checked out this list of free agents. He caught my eye. I think Weber is extremely unlikely. He’ll command at least 5-6 million and he’s an RFA so Nashville can match any offer thrown his way. Not to mention, doesn’t Kenny Holland have a strict policy of NOT offering contracts to other teams RFAs? Pretty sure I read that, which means unless Weber says he has no desire to play in Nashville (to which he’s said the opposite) than he ain’t happening.
I like Wisiewski. we’re replacing an offensive defensemen who was (this year) a defensive liability. I think JW fits the bill, and he’s only 26. Offensively he’s aces, he’s a great QB on the PP, and defensively he’s not awful either. Give him a raise to 3 or 4 million, and theres still money left over to round out the core.
Also notable…does this mean we might get Nick at a discount? Not that he isn’t worth 6 mil, but I remember hearing that there’s no way Detroit would pay him less than Raffi. Maybe with Rafi gone he’d be willing to take 4mil so we can have some extra cash for his final playoff push?
If this does happen..
Which I sort of hope it doesn’t, I love Rafi, but if it does, I’d be more than happy with Wisniewski or Ehrhoff joining the team- they’re both excellent defencemen capable of putting up 50+ points per season. I be not so happy with Bieksa or Kaberle, I can’t deny I have a personal dislike for both of them, plus Kaberle’s disappearing act in the playoffs isn’t helping my feelings…
Just another Wings fan caught between Leafs and Sabres territory.
JJ, we're one step closer!
To the Ehrhoff era! How sick would that be to send out Lidstrom-Ehroff-Dats-Z-Franzen on a power play? I like Him because he reminds me a lot of Lidstrom, perhaps a little less surgical, but can put pucks on net from deep and knows when to skate up into the play…
by MCBATX on May 23, 2011 9:44 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Let's be honest here
It’s a long shot, by long I mean impossible, that we get Shea Weber.
I love Rafa, he’s always been one of my favorite players (I was the one that boldly predicted 50+ points for him this year) but the injuries have killed him. He still has one of the best lead passes in the league, but his defensive ability has greatly declined. He simply isn’t worth $6M anymore. I think he’s doing it for the team, and it only makes my respect for him increase. I would love for him to join the organization whether it be scouting or front office.
As for his replacement, I think I’m in agreement with many here. We need a Wisniewski or Ehrhoff to come in; anything less could be a major blow. I can’t even imagine losing Lids at this point. I also love Markov’s offensive ability, which is what we’re losing in Rafa, and I’m willing to risk his injury history.
This news makes me sad
I really hope it’s not true
"I don't think you're happy enough. I'll teach you to be happy."
People, stop talking about Weber coming here.

torn
ever since Holland signed Rafalski, i’ve never been a fan because i thought $6mil was way too much for him. ’08 Cup run aside, i have far too many more memories of myself screaming at the TV over a bad decision he made than memories of myself feeling good about a great play he made.
that said, this is definitely a hit to the Red Wings’ depth, and i wouldn’t be a Red Wings fan if i said i was happy about Rafalski leaving this way. at least Rafalski was a sure commodity for his skillset, and i’m not sold on a lot (read: ANY) of the UFA defensemen out there this summer. i really hope this dissuades Lidstrom from retiring for at least another year.
That was a gut punch...
I wish he could hang around for another season..but this sucks. I believe Mr.Holland told the FREEP that he has not heard anything yet…from the horse’s mouth…….Christian Ehrhoff anyone..??
Kind of a bummer
I like Raffi – though sometimes he really pisses me off with being a TO machine (last 5 minutes of Game 7!!), but the Wings really need someone as smart as he is on the back-end. I remember early in the season, Raffi was out for 5-7 games or something and when he returned, the PP looked better, the breakouts were better, the whole damn offense was better. Maybe it was against Edmonton (), he came back and had 3 assists in his first game back….idk, I’m sure JJ has the stats on it.
It makes me sad to hear that he’s retiring and I think the Wings will miss him more than we think right now. And he’s a hometown boy from Dearborn, and he’s been a Wings fan his whole life, so if he’s got to retire, he should retire as a Red Wing.
But…the cap space will be nice to have, the back-end being remade will commence, and hopefully, the Wings will honor Raffi and the entire 2008 Cup team with something nice in the not too distant future.
He did go on a bit of a tear after he came back
But the turnovers thing is right on. For leading the Wings’ defense in per-game scoring rates, he also had the most officially-counted turnovers on the entire team.
A quick bit on the turnovers issue though:
While I don’t doubt that Rafalski had a ton of them, I did have significant problems with my own turnover/takeaway numbers matching those of the official scorekeeper. The part that makes it much more difficult to figure is that the problems weren’t limited to only one side of the counting issue. I noticed overcounting and undercounting at both home and away games. It’s possible (even probable) that everything evened out pretty well and we’ve got some kind of gross amalgam of a good comparison going (like I said, I don’t doubt Rafalski had more than his fair share).
I’m re-working the CSSI stats. It’s a project that’s going to take some time, but I have to go back and look at each game. I intend to have a good answer on the turnover issue by the time I’ve completed that. After all, not all turnovers are created equal. When I’m done, we should be able to look at total turnovers and get a good idea of how many of them by defensemen led directly to goals against.

So, Raffi IS out.
An interesting idea from the Freep – Jovanovski. I think it’d be a Chelios situation all over again. Hate him completely until the crest on his chest changes.
Dancing Datsyuk Decidedly Dazzles Dainty Defensemen
I would not like Jovanovski.
I was completely unimpressed with his level of play in the first-round series and not horribly impressed with the numbers I can see on him through the regular season. Sure, Detroit has more skill to surround him with, but I don’t see him as a solution for us.

I would not object to being hit over this
But I would take Doan before Jovanovski. He’s a decent defender, sure, but he’s entering the twilight of his career and has a nack for tacking bad penalties and making dirty hits. Not Red Wing material.

I'd agree with that...
…I’ve always liked the way Doan plays, I just hate that he’s playing against us.

Yeah, he always seemed like he could be a Chelios type player (not Jovanovski). And I am not ashamed to admit that I snag him every 2011 offseason in NHL 11. And he scores 80+ points for my playing on the second line every single time. It’s awesome.

I'm not sold on the JoVo Cop
Wisnewski, White, Bieksa, maybe Anton Babchuk, Christian Ehrhoff – any / all of those guys would be an upgrade.
Ehrhoff & Bieksa – nice upgrade over E and Raffi. And they both play with a bit of an edge. They’re both fairly young as well, not to mention we’d be taking from Vancouver and picking up a former Shark.
Ian White – from what I’ve seen in the playoffs, he’s been pretty solid.
Babchuk – idk much about him, but Calgary sure is a physical team.
Wisnewski – my least favorite probably, but still an upgrade over Big Rig.
Jovanovski? – no thanks.
Markov – too fragile (must be Italian…)
