Rafalski/Red Wings Schedule Press Conference for Wednesday

Per the Red Wings, Veteran defenseman Brian Rafalski will hold a press conference with General Manager Ken Holland to "discuss his future with the organization".  The conference will be Wednesday the 25th at 11am EDT.

More from the official release:

An undrafted player coming out of the University of Wisconsin, Rafalski fine-tuned his skills in Europe before returning to North America where he enjoyed 11 NHL seasons -- including four with the Red Wings. He was a two-time All-Star and won the Stanley Cup three times, two of which were with the New Jersey Devils in 2000 and 2003.

Rafalski also had an excellent international playing career, winning two Olympic silver medals with Team USA at Salt Lake City (2002) and Vancouver (2010). In Vancouver, Rafalski was named the best defenseman of the tournament, finishing with four goals, four assists and a plus-7 rating in six games.

Rafalski was born and raised in suburban Detroit and attended Southfield Christian High School. He and his wife, Felicity, have three sons.

For those interested in watching the press conference, DetroitRedWings.com will have a live streaming feed.  The feed will go active then.

I'm guessing that they're not going to announce that Rafalski is being given robotic legs or laser-eyes so he can keep playing.

You mean my inside source was wrong?! Shoot.

Too bad too

Robo-legs Rafalski would have been an AWESOME nickname.

Thanks, Brian!

I’m not as sentimental about Rafalski as others are, mostly because I’m not American and I’m not from Michigan. However, he was brought to Detroit to fill the role of offensive defenseman who could contribute on the power play. He filled that role admirably, and his defensive shortcomings were made up for by his pairing with Lidstrom.

It’s a shame that injuries have forced him to call it a career early (since this is my guess on why he’s retiring now and not playing one more year). While he wasn’t the greatest d-man physically, he was one of the smartest players I’ve ever seen on the Wings.

Boy, when you look at his career accomplishments, I think he’s got a case for one of the most underrated defensemen of the last 15 years.

Kudos on a great career, Brian. I think the Wings are going to miss him a lot next year.

Hall-of-fame credentials?

First-ballot lock?
2nd-3rd ballot welcome?
Eventual induction?
Left out in the cold?

What are your thoughts?

by J.J. from Kansas on May 24, 2011 11:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I was just thinking of that question

I’d need to do some comparison statistical analysis (read: spend more time on the internet at the expense of spending time with my family), but my initial gut reaction is that he gets in eventually, but not on his first shot.

However, a HUGE qualifier will be the guys that are still not in when he becomes eligible for the first time.

I don’t know his career stats off the top of my head, but 3 Cups will not hurt in the least.

The big question is who are his peers? Who are the guys who were comparable to what he brought to the table during his career? Guys that were more known for their offensive prowess than their defensive capabilities. I think if you identify those types of players and then compare how Rafalski fared next to them, you’ve got a better answer at whether he ends up in the HOF.

Bigger question: if he does get in, does he go in as a Wing or Devil?

I thought the hockey hall of fame doesn’t do the baseball cap thing that the baseball hall of fame does?

by Apocalyptic0n3 on May 24, 2011 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

They don't

But they kinda do.

I might be surprised for Raffi to pick Detroit over Jersey if he actually was forced to choose. Yeah, he’s a native Michigander, but the Wings aren’t the team that plucked him out of Europe and gave him 2/3rds of his career.

by J.J. from Kansas on May 24, 2011 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions

They don't

But I thought that players will “enter” as a member of a specific team. Here’s a link to an interview Shahanan did with Puck Daddy.

Finally: If the Hockey Hall of Fame was like the baseball Hall, and you had to go in wearing a particular uniform, which one would you chose?
The Red Wings.

It’s more a question for us fans than anything official.

While I cannot find the exact quote

I do remember Chris Chelios being asked a similar question, Blackhawks or Red Wings. His answer was he will have to select his Team USA sweater.

I don't see him in the Hall

Unless it’s a really slow year for nominees, he shouldn’t make it. I think his NHL career was too short and he wasn’t dominant enough to overcome that (like Orr, Neely, and Bossy were).

I hate Jonathon Ericsson.

by Brion on May 24, 2011 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Mike Bossy had the greatest decade of any player in any sport ever. It’s unfortunate his career was so short.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on May 24, 2011 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Damn. his worst season, he still scored 38 goals and he was plagued by injuries that forced him to retire.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on May 24, 2011 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Man, do we really need a right handed dude...

Please, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Raff might be the only right handed shot on the team. That’s something I feel was lacking all year long. You better be damn sure we’ll need whoever his replacement is to be a righty too.

I’ll really miss him and Nick switching sides on the PP…

by Izzy Weiss on May 24, 2011 11:48 AM CDT reply actions

oh yeah

Well Mursak only played a handful so I’ll take a pass on that one. Eaves played well on the left side while on the PP during that stint where everyone was down with inury. Which makes sense as thats the best way to get a one-timer off.
See, all the more reason to bring in some more righties.

by Izzy Weiss on May 24, 2011 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

This just in ...

Sami Salo is a right-handed shot and an unrestricted free agent. Reports also indicate he’s 36 years-old, is injury-prone and has one testicle.

by voline on May 24, 2011 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

You'd be better served

Resigning Ericsson, then going after James Wisniewski, former local, right handed, big offensive upside, cheaper than most of the other names thrown up. Montreal will be tied up keeping Markov and Hamrlik so he might come for a steal (and the lure of a cup)

Vancouver are in better shape cap wise that Detroit are, so Bieksa, Erhoff and Salo will likely be out of the equation (especially Bieksa, there’s no way he’s leaving Vancouver), Yandle and Weber are RFA and wont be touched, and the likes of Brewer will be Tampa’s first priority after re-signing Simon Gagne, so really any talk of Bieksa, Brewer, or Weber is just insane fantasy hockey talk.

There is no way we’re replacing a D man of Rafalski’s caliber right away.. the guy was a perfect fit for the wings.. finding another fit as well as Rafa did will be tougher than just picking the biggest name D-man on the market.

When I say “he will be missed” I mean it both sentimentally, and in team structure.

by TiPPiDa on May 26, 2011 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Best of luck, Raff.

As a Badger fan/alumnus and lifelong Wings fan, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Raffy wear red and white (and occasionally blue) for much of his hockey career. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him in a front office or broadcasting role, as there’s no question he’s a highly intelligent guy.

by texwestern on May 24, 2011 12:26 PM CDT reply actions

Thanks for the hard work Raff

With today’s medical technology, we SHOULD be able to get him some sort of cybernetic knees. Maybe implant those laser eyes with an advanced targeting system to make those break-out passes absolutely perfect.

as to the HoF: it’s a toss-up. I know my bias makes me want to say “yes” and I have a hard time separating that bias from my objective opinion, but I think all of his accomplishments will finally get him in (not as a 1st ballot unless it’s a slow year). Also helping his case: it’s the HOCKEY HoF, not the NHL HoF, or “Bettmann’s hall of dreamy guys he would like to kiss.”

One of my favorite players

and I spent much of my life in/near his hometown. His humble, hard-working nature was a great fit for the Wings.
He will be missed but I wish him the best in this next stage of his life.

anyone heard anything about holmstrom?

He was the wings masterton nominee and there is a rumor on twitter he may call it quits as well

DETROIT RED WINGS – "war were declared"

by Eric @ PRBU on May 24, 2011 1:49 PM CDT reply actions

I haven’t seen that rumor come from anybody that I trust.

by J.J. from Kansas on May 24, 2011 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

It seems like the Holmstrom rumor has only come from one ‘source’ so far. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if he retired, but then again he did just sign a 2-year deal last off season, indicating he felt he had 2 more years left in him. His intensity and ‘heart’ would be hard to replace.

Okay, after reading this:

http://detroit.sbnation.com/detroit-red-wings/2011/5/23/2186395/brian-rafalski-injury-retirement-detroit-red-wings

I didn’t realize the extent of his knee injury. That’s really f’ing impressive to play through that. Hats off to him, and I will stop ripping on him. Hopefully the 6mil will get a nice, less injury-prone replacement though.

by liddy5 on May 24, 2011 2:00 PM CDT reply actions

Class act all the way.

I don’t think anyone can deny that Rafalski defined class. He showed his championship caliber but also the heart of a giant despite his size. Undrafted in the NHL, goes to Europe to refine his skills, 3 rings 2 medals. A fantastic career for the suburban Detroit boy, a class act. He knew it was time to hang em up for himself but also for the organization to move forward. Thanks for the great memories Raffy!

by MajesticY on May 24, 2011 2:05 PM CDT reply actions

The guy

walked away from $6M guaranteed. All he had to do was show up next year and give it his best shot. It wouldn’t have been best for the team, and it may not have been best for him long-term, but it’s still a damn classy thing to do.

by Big Z in Orlando on May 25, 2011 11:06 AM CDT up reply actions

He was an absolute beast

in the Olympics for USA last year; I think he earned most valuable defenseman for the Olympics.

by Da Soo on May 24, 2011 2:23 PM CDT reply actions

Raffi was amazing

total respect for this great player. he wasnt a star at the start, but he become a deadly defensemen with his breakout passes and point shots.

im gonna miss his presence on the team once he officially retires. but yeah…we’ll need to find more right handed players.

who do you think hollands gonna pick up? jova?

by forever_rednwhite on May 24, 2011 3:23 PM CDT reply actions

Names I like:

In no particular order: Wisniewski, Erhoff, Pitkanen. I’d kick the tires on White, Jovo, and Brewer. I also think we’re definitely going to see Ericsson on the backend again next year.

I hate Jonathon Ericsson.

Thank you Mr. Rafalski, may I have another?

Just a blog newbie’s two cents:
McCrimmon out, new defense coach Brian Rafalski in!

by leftcoastWing on May 24, 2011 3:43 PM CDT reply actions

Welcome

You’re the third person I’ve heard ask the question about Rafalski becoming the next assistant coach.

I would not rule it out, but my gut tells me that they would want him to coach at a lower level first to see if he has any coaching ability before he gets put in charge of the defense of the Red Wings.

by Amerinadian on May 24, 2011 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, Kocur made the jump right away and… well, it wasn’t a great choice.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on May 24, 2011 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd take anyone good who's right handed.

I thought they should have traded for Joe Corvo at the deadline last year. Ian White would be a decent pickup. No on Pitkanen or Jovanovski.

Just realized...

One Badger retires and another Badger gets a shot to replace him. Very fitting.

Take care, thanks for the help, but glad to see you go.

Wasn’t worth the 6 million at 37 and has been a defensive liability the past few Cup Runs. This was a very fortunate retirement for the Wings.

by Naysayer on May 24, 2011 9:23 PM CDT reply actions

This saddens me a bit.

Brian Rafalski’s performance in the Olympics was the decisive factor for at least a few new fans I know.
Great player. I’m sad to think he won’t be back.
I feel like we’ll have a few years before we get our defensive lines back to form after all the changes this off season.

Good news bad news

Raffi will be missed, no doubt about that….while the Wings will have the money to spend this off-season I’m very concerned about the turnover on the blue-line. Salei, Rafalksi gone for sure..pray Lids doesn’t retire. That would leave us with E, Kronwall, and Stewie. Kindl would come up but we’d still need to go out and get 2 top d-men…Wings are gonna be real busy this off-season

by Anmol Kohal on May 25, 2011 2:53 PM CDT reply actions

Very sad day he will be missed for a long time
