Derek Zona over at Oilers blog The Copper & Blue has been doing a great job on the statistical side of the playoffs so far. In this one, he shows the disparity in scoring chances. You might be interested to know that the "gutless" Patrick Marleau led all San Jose forwards in the scoring chance for-to-against ratio with a +5.

I think the numbers also really go to show just how dominant the Wings best players have been. Overall, Detroit was outchanced 16-12 in the scoring chance at even-strength department, yet Datsyuk and Zetterberg managed a +4 each.

That’s a little misleading though. Being on the ice while his linemates do the work would get him a +1 in this category without him having to do anything for it. So without going back and watching all the scoring chances he was on ice for, we don’t have any context to them.

I guess it’s just another reason that the CSSI is superior to all.

True, context is important

and, like I said… somewhere (really not sure where now), if I were doing a CSSI for the Sharks, I likely would have given Marleau two extra minuses for the way he played on both the Cleary and Holmstrom goals.

Still, although scoring chances (and Corsi) are very team-dependent, it would make Marleau among the luckiest guys on the team to have been the beneficiary of getting to team-leading number among forwards without at least some of his contribution in either creating scoring chances for San Jose or preventing them by Detroit.

As any goalie can tell you

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.
