Jagr: Rumor or Fact?

Malik throws this bombshell into the mix this morning.

@NHLGossip on Twitter, who actually deals in facts, Jagr’s agent, Jaroslav Zidek, told Sovetsky Sport’s Pavel Lysenkov that his client is only interested in staying in Russia if he re-signs with Avangard Omsk, and that otherwise, his client will pursue employment in the NHL, and as it turns out, Khan reports that Jagr’s North American agent has contacted the Wings:

Star-divide

The Red Wings didn’t call Jagr. His agent, Petr Svoboda, called them. But Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has had several conversations with Svoboda, and coach Mike Babcock has spoken to Jagr.

Svoboda reportedly contacted Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers, two of Jagr’s former teams, as well as Montreal.

But Jagr would prefer to play in Detroit for the chance to play with highly skilled players Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and, if he returns, Nicklas Lidstrom.

The Red Wings consider it a gamble, since Jagr turns 40 on Feb. 15 and hasn’t played in the NHL since 2007-08. But they also believe it might be worth the risk if they can get the Czech native fairly cheap, since they don’t have to relinquish anything in return.

Holland declined comment, except to acknowledge that his club has been contacted and is exploring the possibility.

If we played with Z and Dats on the first line

then put Jagr on the wing I would be furious. It kinda seems like a waste to me. If were going to get him let it be for the third line.

As I posted in today’s Morning News, Malik is saying that the entire rumor is based around a “pal” of Jagr saying “Detroit would be a good fit”

Does not seem like a well founded rumor. Just seems like someone took a quote of context and reported it as a definite possibility. While you can never count us out of signing former superstars looking for one last run at the Cup, I do not think we should be looking at this as a possibility until July 1st when we know the status of Lidstrom and Holmstrom as well as if we will try to sign Richards.

Me too

We just suffered a year of a washed-up former superstar trying to hang around the NHL for one more shot of glory. And that was with a guy who didn’t have character issues.

Put me in the disJagree column.

I guess I like the idea only if

we don’t make another signing/trade. I think I would be more optimistic about this if the whole Modano thing would have worked out or not happened. There’s no denying that Jagr has talent (much more left in the tank than Modano). He’s up there in the greatest European born players list.

Also he is involved with his Czech Kladno team, and probably would take a lot of focus away from his game

Maybe it's the hair

But all I can think of when I hear the name “Jagr” is “Robert Lang”. I realize they are vastly different players at different stages of their careers, but I’m starting to get tired of the Wings signing aging veterans that may or may not work out to short term deals. I’d much rather see them start to bring up a couple of the younger players (like Mursak and Emmerton) and give them a shot. At the very least, you’re going to get a ton of effort from the rookies, which could inject energy to the team and make them difficult to play against.

by Amerinadian on Jun 16, 2011 8:31 AM CDT up reply actions

agreed

gotta love the early 90’s Jagr mullet. it was an amazing blend of business, party and curls.

I would much rather see the wings dump that money into Brooks Laich with a 4-5 year deal. This guy bleeds what the wings are all about. hes a young, responsible, workhorse who is also a great guy.

I especially love the story of how he stopped to help a mom and daughter change a flat tire right after Washington was eliminated.

Yes

Laich would be an awesome fit with the Wings. Works hard, responsible defensively, can put the puck in the net.

I would not be opposed to that signing at all.

by Amerinadian on Jun 16, 2011 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

This is the boat I am in. Give the young guys their shot. Mursak and Emmerton will be with us next year, likely as the 12th and 13th forwards, respectively. Don’t risk losing one of them just so we can try our second KHL experiment (again. Stupid Garth Snow).

Well… unless Holland is truly worried he will be without Holmstrom next season and is trying to make sure his bases are covered. If Holmstrom does retire, I think getting Jagr might be good. Jagr could help groom the finesse that Helm has showed glimpses of (most of the time, he just barrels through the opposing team, but he has pulled some Datsyukian Dekes of his own). Jagr is still good enough for third line minutes.

We took a huge chance with Modano, when he last played for the Stars, he was playing on the fourth line. We expected him to come here and play third line. Our third line is as good as the Stars second or even first line was two seasons ago, so we may have expected too much from him. Jagr has still been playing pretty damn well in the KHL since he left the Rangers. It might be worth the risk if Holmstrom leaves, especially since Jagr would come in for a small cap hit over the next year or two hoping to win his first cup in almost two decades.

I can’t think of another reason Holland would be seriously looking at Jagr. He of all people must realize we can’t afford to keep giving up all of our prospects through waivers.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jun 16, 2011 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

It would come at a cost
(like Mursak and Emmerton)

It’s already a possibility that the team may lose either Mursak or Emmerton next year, unless they lose both Draper and Madano and make no other additions to the forward corps.

Adding Jagr means losing Mursak or Emmerton almost for sure, and possibly both if they hold on to Draper.

Didn’t Jagr once say he had not interest in playing in Detroit? Or am I thinking of someone else…

by Big Z in Orlando on Jun 16, 2011 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

As I have said elsewhere, I think this might be Holland playing it safe. If Holmstrom retires, he can have both Emmerton and Mursak and still sign Jagr or keep Draper. If Holmstrom doesn’t retire, we just forget about the Jagr flirtation and move on.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jun 16, 2011 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Modano is GONE

They would carry 14 forwards. Miller, Emmerton & Mursak would rotate in and Hudler or Filppula would be moved.

I could see Emmerton being packaged with either Hudler or Filppula for a D-man

I'd invite Jagr to tryout.

Give him a shot along with the younger players wanting a spot on the team. The added competition of an aging player may induce the hunger manifest in the younger talent. Draw out the competitive edge.

Good God, not another Hulder!

I dont’ think his attitude would make for a great fit. Also my first reation to this news was to be horrified as I saw Hudler’s face flash before my eyes. We have young talented players who have been chosen/groomed for a time such as this. We’ve invested a lot in them and I think it would be a punch to the gut to risk losing any of them for a sunset player who may or may not remember how to play hockey once back in the NHL and who’s personality I don’t think would be a great fit anyway.

by Jim P on Jun 19, 2011 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions

While I would love Holland to get a 5th or 6th rounder for him, I’m not even sure there is that much of a market for him. It’s not often that Detroit fans turn on a homegrown player as badly as we did with Hudler. That will speak loads to any GM who might be willing to risk it.

Is it possible to send him to Grand Rapids? Wouldn’t get anything in return if someone claimed him, but we would be rid of him.

Still impressive, all the talk about this being a young mans game… well, the U.S. team he was playing against isn’t exactly old and slow.

He has great positioning and can cycle. The 3rd goal shows he still has it. Imagine him and Datsyuk playing keep away.

He’s worth a look

I see where you guys are coming from, BUT..

..DID ANYONE SEE HIM IN THE RECENT WORLD CHAMIONSHIP?? Guy was a beast!! I like many, grew up watching Jagr (and mullet) play in the NHL. It had been probably several years since I had seen him play, until the 2011 WC.

I didn’t know what to expect, and he looked like his old self, I couldn’t believe it!! Only thing missing was his mega mullet flowing in the wind as he did circles around everyone. Yes, it wasn’t the NHL and yes, it’s been awhile since he’s been in the league. However, many of the guys playing in the tournament were in fact current, former or future NHL material. So, it’s still a pretty good idea of what he is still capable of.

At age 39, Jagr racked up 5 goals with a total of 9 points in 9 games, including a hat trick against USA, on his way to bronze with his Czech Republic team. Last years WC, Jagr earned 7 points in 9 games and a Gold Medal. One of 24 in the elite Triple Gold Club..

Which makes it a bit unfair, to even begin to compare him to Modano and Hudler. Modano just had a horrible case of bad luck, who knows what could have happened if it wasn’t for missing so many games. And Hudler is well…um.. Hudler…so, yeah. He’s just been in a different league, not like the guy retired… and think he would fit in great with the Wings offensive onslaught.

Although, I’m realistic about what it may take to get him and don’t like where that could go..unless we get the ol’ Kenny Holland (c’mon, we’re the friggin’ Red Wings) special. We just need to keep a good grasp on our core guys and prospects. And I sure hope we re-sign Drapes.. guys working his damn ass off!! Be shame to just let him go like that. Either way, regardless of what happens, I’m confident in the front office to make the right choices.

Ice Time

Most players at this level will produce more if given loads of ice time. The stats you are quoting has Jagr on the ice for 30 minutes a game, in Detroit he’s lucky to get 15-20 minutes.

by Jim P on Jun 16, 2011 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Still though..

Just that alone is pretty impressive. Playing 30 minutes a game at his age. He looked good to me, not really sure how he’s been doing with Avangard. Reports are he’s been making about 5 mill a year over there, so decent I assume.

He was impressive in the WC, but we’ve got to talk about sample size and the fact that he was not playing against the truly best players that were available to any of the teams in that tournament. That was also a hot streak over a very short time frame. His last stint in the NHL did not go well, and there’s no guarantee he can keep that up over the course of an 82-game schedule.

by Amerinadian on Jun 17, 2011 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree, the 82 game sched is something Europeans don’t dig… supposedly they are superior conditioned but too much play….one unhappy Euro. Maybe that’s why they fade in the playoffs. Or maybe it’s all the travel. I wonder what a playoff investigation between NA’s and Euros would show, which teams stand up best….did Boston have a lower % of Euros?

by Jim P on Jun 19, 2011 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I am so against Jagr right now it's not even funny

The Wings have been ousted two years in a row by the same team. What we need is a more cohesive forward unit and more depth at defense. We don’t need another experiment.

I don’t want the Wings to sign anyone in this offseason who makes us better for next year. I want the Wings to sign players who make us better for AT LEAST the next five years. We haven’t been to the WCF in two years and that’s two years too many. I want a dynasty, not a mercenary squad.

Living in Chicago is great... apart from the Blackhawks fans.

by Cornelious on Jun 16, 2011 6:09 PM CDT reply actions

hey...hold on here...

Why are we bashing Modano? He didn’t come to the Wings to be a star and it’s not his fault the tendon in his wrist was slashed. He came in to play in his hometown for one year, to offer veteran leadership, hopefully win a Cup, and contribute as much as he possibly could. I think he did just fine. Not great, not even good, but fine. He put up average numbers for the amount of games and TOI he had. But no on in the world expected him to have over 40 points. He wasn’t supposed to play on a top 2 line or even on the 3rd line most of the time. So don’t bash Modano for him not getting great minutes or for being hurt. He was ok when he was able to play.

by styks on Jun 16, 2011 7:07 PM CDT reply actions

Oh come on now, I like Mike but in the two playoff games he was winded after one trip up and down the ice. Let’s be realistic, the playoffs are very taxing on even the 20 year olds. Detroit needs more youth to go deep in the playoffs. We need to replace retirees with prospects.

by Jim P on Jun 16, 2011 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

I think it was a poor decision to play him in the playoffs after he hadn’t played much during the regular season due to the injury. I wouldn’t expect him to be able to keep up in the playoffs, but his numbers in the regular season weren’t as horrible as people are making it seem

by styks on Jun 17, 2011 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

Nothing against Jagr, but there is nothing in this for the Wings. What is the potential upside of this? Jagr leads Wings to Stanley Cup? Jagr adds final piece of puzzle to Wings Stanley Cup run? Does anyone think that is highly probable?

Is Jagr a two way player? Can he still do it at NHL speed? Does he really think he can crack and earn a spot on the the top two lines day in and day out? If he ends up on the 4th line will he give it 100%?

Happy did one year in the KHL and still hasn’t gotten his NHL sense back. Jagr has done 3 years. I think he has an overconfidence in his skill when compared to his peers.

Anybody remember the hit Ovechkin put on Jagr in the Winter Olympics? That’s high reality of what he’s going to get all season long.

On top of it, who thinks he will play enough games during the regular season AND by useful come playoffs.

We need to continue to develop our future players and their potential.

If we’re going to gamble on an old fart, let’s get the Finnish Flash! At least we know he can still play NHL.

by Jim P on Jun 16, 2011 10:34 PM CDT reply actions

Don't compare Jagr to Modano -

The two never played a similar style of game. While both were able to put up numbers and play defense in their prime, they’re two completely different players in the twilight of their careers. I actually liked Modano on the team, his presence on the point for the PP was nice (especially when our other 2nd PP point options would’ve otherwise been Big Rig and someone else) and while he never clicked with Cleary and Hudler, he was solid while he was healthy. If anything, Huds probably held him back a bit by making too many defensive errors, which further made Modano’s aged wheels look even older.

If anything, I’d compare Jagr to the Hossa experiment. Except he’s older, and probably even a bit more selfish. I wouldn’t totally be opposed to the idea of him on the team at the salary Modano made, but as others have stated, we need to give the youngsters a shot to shine. Mursak could be the Ville Leino that never was in Detroit.

If it comes down to it, give Jagr a tryout. If he doesn’t make the team, he will undoubtedly find a job elsewhere in the NHL.

What’s your honest impression of Happy?, can he regain his form, by that I mean I thought he was an excellent playmaker, a pinpoint passer and shooter. If he was traded for prospects or draft picks, are we losing a piece of the puzzle or have we a replacement? I gather he wants more ice time and to play with Dats and Zett, who doesn’t? but you just don’t come back from Lapland and expect to fall in where you fell out.

by Jim P on Jun 19, 2011 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Honestly

I’m really pissed at how much of the chemistry he lost with the team, but I see a lot of scapegoating him for other Wings’ problems.

I think he can regain his form without needing to play with Datsyuk to score goals or set them up. However, if the Wings can fill a squad via trades or free agency that doesn’t include him, I’m not going to be upset by the loss. I really hope Hudler is spending time this offseason working on drills that will make him a faster skater. He’s pretty nimble, but slow and nimble don’t win a ton of puck battles.

by J.J. from Kansas on Jun 20, 2011 7:05 AM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say he was "solid"

He was coming around when he got injured, which was just a freak accident. But it doesn’t change the fact that he was close to awful over the first 15 games, and his comments about not being used to the conditioning that the Wings go through really made me wonder whether he had the drive to do whatever it took to help the team. Then his comments prior to the playoffs about retiring if the Wings went on a playoff run smacked of selfishness. Imagine what Jagr and all of his baggage will bring?

I’ve got nothing against Modano personally, but he just didn’t fit in with the team, and I don’t think Jagr would, either.

It's was a real shame..

To think, what could have been?? That way Mo would have atleast known for sure. I feel bad for the guy.. that’s really has to weigh on a guy. First the crap in Dallas, then the wrist. Not that he’s not blame for anything, just he never really got a chance in the past few seasons. Can’t ignore the fact, all that has had to effect him mentally, as well as physically.

Agreed, if you caught some of the Dallas games in 09-10, you’d see a fourth liner hanging on, not keeping up and seeing little ice. I’m sure he thought he would see more ice in Detroit.

by Jim P on Jun 19, 2011 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I am interested to know...

What the people who are “against” (lack of a better word).. Mo and possibly Jagr.. thought about or were thinking, when we acquired some other players, at similar situations in their career who ended up being a bit more successful in Hockeytown??

For example, Hull, Dominator and Robitaille.. Not all quite the same situation with the players and the team, as we’re in now, but damn close. Same idea at least… helping give way to the whole idea of.. “Got some left in the tank, want to win another Cup?” idealogy that has up until recently, proven true again and again. No doubt, it also plays a big part in like players continued willingness to give up some chedda, in order to wear the Winged Wheel.. not just because they happen to think they look good in red.

I understand that at this point, we can’t just keep keep putting water in the radiator and hoping to not overheat, we need to take a look at the whole cooling system. To be better prepared and ready for long miles to come, especially with today’s harsh road conditions. However, at the same time, we can’t deny any shot that gets us closer to the Cup.. no matter what year it is.

The easy answer on each of those players is

there was no salary cap back then.

I’m not opposed to Jagr from the “what does he have left in the tank” standpoint – I’m opposed to him because of how much of what’s in the tank I believe he’s willing to give on a consistent basis.

Robitaille and Hasek had not ever won a Stanley Cup when they signed with the Wings (neither had Dallas Drake for that matter). Hull was probably not great in the work ethic department, but he never showed the same attitude that Jagr has his entire career.

Mo

Do you really think Detroit had higher expectations than Dallas. I gathered from the talk that he wanted to come"home" to Detroit to finish, but I think the Wings never promised him more than a fourth line role. Mgt is not dumb to think a 4th liner is going to come to Detroit and be born again into a first or second liner. To tell the truth Mo couldn’t crack a Detroit line, he was inserted. I like the guy but not all experiments are going to work, say like a Bertuzzi

It's the 82 + games....

the NHL regular season will most likely kill Jags (or at least hobble him).

The only comparison that I think you make on Modano to Jagr is the conditioning. Mike had a tough time adjusting and being physically conditioned for what the Wings wanted him to do at the 3rd line Center spot. I think Jagr would have a similar issue – though playing on the Wing may be a little less taxing than Center….I don’t know, but to me that’s the only comparable item of note.

Both are old, both are HHOF’ers, but Jagr is/was a better scorer – and I’m not sure the Wings need to address the offensive side of the game as much as they need to deal with the defensive side this off season.

So, I guess you can put me in the “very skeptical” bunch.
