Daniel Larsson...what are the chances?
Hi, first fan post here. My name's Mike, nice to meet everyone and I've enjoyed following WIIM for quite some time. I saw his name mentioned as a potential backup for Jimmah next season, and I was wondering what everyone thinks. I thought he sort of burned his bridges when he went back to Europe, and would be surprised to see him here next year. He'd be quite the inexperienced backup.

I don't think he'll be that guy even if he wants to come back to North America
The Wings have the benefit of not having to put up with any kind of primadonna attitude that Larsson would want to throw their way. He needs to prove to them that he’s matured first.

Slim to none
He wasn’t NHL ready when he left and most players take a step back when they leave the minors here and go to play pro in Europe. Hell, most players that leave the Wings are not even allowed back. Hudler, really, is the one exception (and we saw how that turned out). No, I think we will go with someone more experienced, probably mid 30’s.
Going with the majority here
I really can’t see him coming back considering one of the big reasons he left was to get significant playing time. He will be the backup to Howard, and we’ve seen Babcock ride Howard into the ground if he has to and isn’t confident in the back up.
Like Josh, I think the Wings go with an experienced guy that has a proven track record and give the team 25-30 quality starts.
The only way i'd see him on this team is
if he came to camp and impressed the staff and he has to play an above average pre season to make it
uhhhhh yeah
I'd say maybe
I don’t think Larsson returning to Sweden was such a big deal. He played two full seasons in the AHL. He didn’t bail mid-season like Dick Axelsson and that ridiculously tall Swede whose name I can’t remember. Notice the Wings haven’t even cut ties with Axelsson?
And Larsson’s stated reasons for leaving were pretty good. He said that in the Elitserien his team would have a dedicated goaltending coach whereas the Jim Bedard splits time between Detroit and Grand Rapids. From what I’ve read the shooters in the SEL are as good as they are in the American League. Larsson had a very regular season this year: 2.53 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in 45 starts.
The Wings can retain his rights for the next two years. Larsson is only 25. They can afford to be patient with him.
But, I think the Wings would prefer to have an NHL veteran netminder backing up the still-young Howard. Just seems to be their way.
Very Very slim Id say
I dont think the Wings would go with another young goalie to backup a fairly young goalie. If this were still Ozzie’s show,id say he had a shot but with Howie getting majority of the starts I see more of a Ty Conklin/Brian Boucher type coming in if Ozzie decides to hang it up/feels physically unable to compete at his highest level.
Boucher?
…I’d sooner burn down JLA than have him suit up with the Wheel in any capacity. Maybe stickboy.
