Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

According to the official Detroit Red Wings twitter feed, the team has announced a media conference call for Tuesday at noon eastern time. Chris Osgood and Ken Holland will be part of the call.

Looks like the picture of what the Red Wings' goaltender situation will look like for the 2011-12 season will get a bit clearer tomorrow. Thoughts?

Osgood will be the backup next season...

I have a very hard time believing they will be announcing his retirement over the phone. This makes no real difference for the Red Wings…it is and will be Jimmy Howard’s team.

I disagree..

Holland and Osgood are in Canada. Why fly back just for an announcement of “We signed him for another year” ? Correct me if I’m wrong, but they didn’t do anything with Lidstrom on the phone or in person and he is more important to the team. I think Conklin was signed last week and they are going to announce whatever position within the organization that Oz will have. (Probably goalie coach in GR). Did anyone notice the Thomas McCollum article in the Freep today? These stories don’t invent themselves. The Wings Media people suggest them.

Lidstrom re-signed this year via conference call

Not sure what you were trying to say with that 3rd sentence.

I think that Ozzie is going to be asked to mentor Thomas McCollum and that is what this announcement is about.

by LAwing on Jul 18, 2011 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Are you saying McCollum is going to be the backup?

He’s nowhere near NHL ready. If that’s the move they are making then the entire Red Wings front office should be fired.

My bad, didn't see your part about Conklin in the previous post.

I still don’t think that they’re going to announce his retirement over the phone.

I hope not (retirement)...

I have always been an Ozzie fan. I wish he would have gotten the Conn Smythe in 09. So I hope if he is coming back, that he puts up 20-25 wins and really pushes Jimmy to be better.

There is absolutely no way we can sign someone without it being public knowledge. All signed contracts must be submitted to the league offices within (I believe) 24 hours. As soon as it hits their doorstep, especially when there is a retirement on the line the likes of Ozzy, someone would let a media friend know. Conklin has not been signed yet. At most, they have an agreement in place.

I doubt Ozzy is announcing his retirement. Really don’t see him not getting a press conference for it.

I have a feeling he'll be back

I’ll just go with my gut on this one. He gets one more chance to lift the Stanley Cup

This is awful news...

If it’s announced that he’s returning. If he’s retiring then this off-season gets an A+.

I hate the idea of Chris Osgood returning for next season. Because a 40 year old goaltender, who spent massive parts of the last two seasons nursing various injuries and whose stats since the 2008-2009 season are a remarkable 0.892 SV% and a phenomenal 2.96 GAA, and who has essentially had to be BENCHED in order to make the playoffs (remember Jimmy’s seemingly impossible amount of consecutive games in order to make the playoffs?) has absolutely no value to this team anymore.

He was a great goalie. He’s no longer a viable option to start, let alone win a game. Sure, Ty Conklin had a bad couple seasons, but Chris Osgood has totally exhausted any faith I had in him.

He’s a Hall of Famer, critics be damned. But his value to the team is minimal at best.

Sorry for the anger. I just, ugh, ever since that Minnesota Wild game from two years ago, where he absolutely shit the bed on every shot taken in the first period, I’ve had no faith. If he starts 25 games this season, that’s 13 losses (his winning percentage is 47%). Ugh. Bad news to an already bad day.

Should read "his winning percentage is 47% over the last three seasons"

He has over 400 wins, I am aware. But his late three seasons is what I’m basing this argument on.

I can see your point

But as it is, Jimmy is our starter now. It’s his show. Ozzy’s only gonna be the backup, and worst comes to worst, he plays what, 25 games? Anyway, last year we won the Central largely thanks to Jimmy and Joey Mac. He (Joey) played well enough for us to win most of the games he started. Right now, we have him signed to play in GR. So if this (supposed) deal doesn’t work, we can always call him up. Also, maybe it’s just me, but I think Ozzy can play well enough for us to win. His numbers are pretty bad, but he’s starting this season fresh, and with a chance to recapture some of the magic.

Ultimately, it’s all on him. Hell, maybe I’m wrong and this turns out to be one of the biggest mistakes of the offseason. But I think he deserves one more chance, one more shot to prove the critics wrong.

^ This

I really don’t think we’d have much to lose giving him another shot.

by Float on Jul 18, 2011 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

except

overworking Jimmy, just like we have the last two seasons. He’s played in 63 in both the last two seasons. In my opinion that’s too many games. He would of played in a couple more last year if it wasn’t for a minor injury. What happens if Jimmy goes down for a significant amount of time?

by wzit2ya on Jul 19, 2011 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I've been waiting for him to "recapture some of the magic"

Since the 2008 playoffs. Every year I expect to see the re-emergence of the Osgood we all remember. And then he lets in a weak wrist shot from the half boards blocker side because he’s flailing his arm like a wet pool noodle and suddenly, 15 seconds after the opening puck has been dropped the Wings job is now harder then it has to be.

I hope I’m wrong. But man, this has got me upset.

by eight_legged_freaks on Jul 18, 2011 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

Its been since the Stanley Cup finals in 09 that Osgood has been reliable. I love him and nothing is better then hearing the Ozzie chant echoing from the Joe Louis crowd, but the last two seasons he’s only been able to start 31 games and only won 12. I remember in the December of 2009 waiting for his 400 win cause he was only four away, he didn’t get it till December of 2010. He has five wins since and 12 losses. As I said I love him, and he’s been a great mentor for Jimmy but he no longer is a viable back up. He’s to often injured and at the age where his body will continue to fail him. Hope he proves me wrong and makes me eat my words but I just don’t see it happening. As you said he’s a hall of famer but those days are long gone.

balls!!

I moved on…I wanted conklin. There is just too much uncertainty with Ozzie at this point.

Thanks for the year Red Wings!! Come back strong in 2012
