From Chuck Pleiness (@Wingsfrontman), Detroit has signed free agent defenseman Ian White to a two year deal which will average his cap hit to $2.875M.

Of course, when I wrote that he sucks last week, you all know I was kidding, right?
People keep calling White "smallish" and I guess in a world of 6'5" behemoths, he does give up a bit of size, but he also does play physical pretty well. However, Detroit was looking to partially replace what Rafalski brought to the lineup and White should do a decent job of that. He's an excellent puck-mover and skates very well. He's also a right-handed shot who's more than capable of manning the point and booming it from deep.
White's addition leaves the Red Wings with just about $7M of cap space and a backup goaltender's spot to fill. He will likely play good minutes and even more likely will mean that Brendan Smith will spend this season as the #1 defenseman in Grand Rapids getting the experience and minutes he needs to refine his game. This will also mean that Kindl and Commodore will fight for who plays #6 and who is #7 with Janik becoming the emergency backup in that situation.
