Quick Hits: Another Scrimmage and a Nabokov Sighting

  • Late Addition: We have lineups for tonight's game and it looks like the only true vet will be Conklin in net. Everyone else is young and/or a prospect. [Detroit Free Press]
  • As was expected, it sounds like we should expect Brendan Smith to be sent back down to Grand Rapids relatively soon.  He just is not ready to play in the big leagues and the preseason has shown that; he has made a lot of mistakes that we can't afford to have made.  [Detroit Free Press]
  • Ever the positive person, Ansar Khan believes that Jan Mursak's broken ankle is actually good for the Wings as it will allow them to build depth. [MLive]
  • Team Red (led by our second and third lines) upset Team White (led by our top line and top defensive pair) yesterday 6-4 in another intrasquad scrimmage.  Goal scorers included Brent Raedeke, Valterri Filppula (2 goals), Jiri Hudler (2 goals), Todd Bertuzzi, Ian White, Henrik Zetterberg, and Tomas Tatar. [MLive]
  • Japers' Rink believes the Capitals need to protect Mike Green the way the Red Wings protect their top defensemen and provides a great bit of insight into how we do it. [Japers' Rink]
  • Wayne Simmonds will not be punished for his alleged homophobic slur against Sean Avery.  Colin Campbell was in charge of this decision and came to the conclusion that there was not enough evidence to support Avery's claims, and I agree 100%.  The NHL has re-iterated to all teams and players that refs can, and should, penalize players for their language on the ice, however. [Broad Street Hockey]
  • I forgot to mention this yesterday: the Devils will retire Scott Niedermayer's jersey afterall.  There was a lot of doubt that it would happen because he left the team to play with his brother in Anaheim and the fans resent him for it.  I am glad the Devils are not as shortsighted as their fanbase. [In Lou We Trust]
  • Are the Sharks violating their fans' Constitutional right to freedom of speech? [Puck Daddy]
  • Evgeni Nabokov lost in his first game with the Islanders last night. [Sports Illustrated]
  • Blue Shirt Banter has an interesting interview with Ryan Bourque, son of legend Ray Bourque, and how difficult it was for him to get out of his dad's shadow to make the trip to Europe with the Rangers this year. [Blue Shirt Banter]
  • Lighthouse Hockey hopes to see more balance in the NBC schedule in future years. I agree; less Red Wings games on national tv, please.  I want to hear Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond as much as humanly possible. [Lighthouse Hockey]
  • Arctic Ice Hockey has more interesting names from the 1940's, including 'Harry Dick.' [Arctic Ice Hockey]

Discussion of the Day: With final cuts just around the corner, what do you believe our opening night lines/pairings will look like.  Keep in mind the lines we used for yesterday's scrimmage, per Khan at MLive.
