Just for fun
With rumors (still) swirling of Getzlaff, Perry, or Ryan being traded, it got me thinking:
What HATED player would you trade Datsyuk or Zetterberg for?
Here's the example: For some random reason, Pav goes to Holland and says "I want out. Trade me now." What player that you absolutely hate would you trade Dats for? Crosby? Malkin? Chara? Ovechkin?
For Datsyuk, I would probably only take a guy who could play both ways in the middle so though I absolutely hate him, Getzlaff is the only reasonable choice, but I would also look into Kesler. (Reality is that if Dats wanted out, I would look for Claude Giroux or Maxime Talbot or Jordan Stall but since I don't hate any of those 3, they don't count for this).
Think back, what hated player of the past would you love to loathe on the Red Wings? Claude Lemieux? Shane Doan? Chris Pronger? Matt Cooke? Ian Laperriere? Tie Domi? Darius Kasparaitis?
I could go on forever...who would you choose for any of the questions?

Malkin plays defense fairly well
It would have to be either him or Ovechkin. I just don’t see Getzlaf as bringing enough of what he has offensively over Datsyuk to make up for what Datsyuk has defensively over him.
I still don’t believe Ovie’s points are so low, but I do think coming to Detroit would wake him up.
I absolutely would not trade for Kesler unless we got way more value coming back. Adding Datsyuk to the Canucks to play with the Sedins makes them the Cup-winners. Giroux, Talbox, or Staal would also have to come with some pretty hefty value added.

I would go to a team struggling right now
and wants to make the big splash…. so i would take my GM talents to buffalo and ask for Myers and either roy or Vanek….
Are you talking about a 1-1 trade only?
Because I honestly don’t think you can do a 1-1 trade with Datsyuk that would be equal. He’s the best all-around forward in the league. Adding the “player you hate” to it means I cannot answer this question (I don’t hate anyone that is anywhere near Dats’ worth).
Z is a little easier. I dislike Toews and Kane, but I would give up Z for one of them if he wasn’t going to stay. Maybe Babs could make a proper forward outta them. ;)
As for the guy I would love to loathe on the wings….either Forseberg or Roy.

What about that Wayne Gretzky guy? I heard he’s a real douche.

For Datsyuk?
There’s very few players in the league that can bring what he does both offensively and defensively. Depending on health and how his game progressed, I would not be opposed to doing a Dats-Crosby swap given how Crosby was learning the defensive side of the game and trying to get better. But with his health issues now in play, there’s no way I’d do it now.
I would swap Zetterberg for Toews in less than a heartbeat. I don’t even have to think hard about making that deal.
I wouldn't
I like Toews, but I don’t want to give up the Z that I know can shutdown an opposing team’s best player for 7 games.
Of course, in terms of age, Toews may have more longer-term upside. But that’s an extremely tough decision to make still.
Is anybody else getting the feeling that Zetterberg is the Swedish Chris Drury?
Awesome few years, great offensive dominance, etc. etc.
Then, all of a sudden, the offensive part of his game just drops off a cliff. The defense and two-way play is still there, there’s just no finish anymore?
I hope not. Just a parallel I thought of the other day.

I don't know
I don’t think his offensive production is all that bad…not as prolific as it had been, but he’s been scoring at almost a point-per-game pace the last 20ish games so its not like he isn’t racking up points.
Steve Yzerman wasn’t exactly a scoring powerhouse in his later years. But he was the undeniable leader, and an awesome two-way player. I think I like drawing that parallel better…especially since Z seems to be the Captain-in-waiting when Lidstrom decides to retire (hopefully never).
For Datsyuk, I would think the conversation would start (and probably end) with Malkin. Even then I would probably want something additional.
For Zetterberg, I agree with you on Toews (definitely my favorite non-Wing.) After that, I’d say my second choice might be Bergeron (especially given the upside on age,) but I’d be more hesitant to pull the trigger there.
Can't be done
There is no player in the NHL that compares to the whole package Pavel brings. ANY player in the NHL replacing Pavel would be a setback for the Wings. We may get one or even two aspects of his game, but not all of them. I marvel at the fact that he is not recognized more by the league. I know the players in the NHL know it (his skill level)) but lets face it…it has nothing to do with his skill level…the league would much rather have a Canadian as its poster boy than a Russian. As it turns out though Crosby’s smug demeanor and blame game don’t come close to the level of class Steve Yzerman brought to the NHL. He is a great scorer but the real hockey fans know the game is not just about scoring. No….the Wings have the best player in the NHL and he is here to stay.

For Datsyuk....
It would have to be a concussion-less Crosby. And after that nobody comes close. Heck, Crosby isn’t exactly a perfect trade. Sure, your scoring gets better, but there are so many things that Dats brings off the scoresheet that I don’t think anybody in the NHL could adequately replace. There is nobody in the NHL that comes close to the caliber of two-way player that Datsyuk is…not to mention his Datsyukian prowess at puckhandling and theft.
Trading Datsyuk for Getzlaff
I’ll take: “Trades that would immediately get any GM in the NHL fired” for 200, Alex.

Hmmm...
Datsyuk for Malkin… I think that would be the only one I’d even consider, though I don’t think I’d pull the trigger on it…
Zetterberg is a whole lot easier. Toews, Giroux, Malkin (obviously)… In a heartbeat.
