It's been previously reported that the NHL had officially decided on the Leafs at Wings for the Classic, but now, according to Khan (!), it's a done deal and the venue has been finalized. 110,000+ will pack the Big House for the largest attendance ever at a hockey game. Comerica will be hosting the some events too. Hell yes, everyone. Hell freakin' yes.

Sorry Blues fans, there is no conspiracy against you. Just stop putting yourself in situations to take dumb penalties. And the Datsyuk hit on Jackman? Really? After all the crap Jackman pulls, you can't really complain about him getting some of his own medicine. Ya know, it's kind of fun having the Blues relevant again.

I sure wish Modano’s season here would have turned out differently.

Check out the video evidence the Blues have for a non-penalty.
Where Backes pushes Burrows into the boards head-first and gets called for boarding in, what looks to me like…boarding. If you’re gonna make that post, I say get some really clear-cut evidence….like a phantom interference call in game 7 or a non-call on a trip at center-ice.

Now that St Louis finally has a team contending with the Wings and Hawks for the division and conference lead the fans finally catch on to the fact that the refs are really bad at their jobs
Let’s face it Blues (and any other teams fans), the refs have been atrocious the last few years. Us Wings fans can point to the 8 billion penalty shots given to the other team off phantom hooking calls & the non-calls when our guy(s) get dragged down in front of the net in plain sight. The previous few years have been all about “goalie interference” and “intent to blow” which have fucked us over in the past (remember game 2 against the Ducks back in 09? Good times!). I’m sure there are plenty of calls that haven’t gone your way or calls against the other team that weren’t made but that happens to every team, not just yours.
So basically, unless you’re Minnesota or either of the NY teams you have no right to whine about the officiating.
Rangers hilarious goalie interference penalty against the Stars (and the Winter Classic one could argue): http://youtu.be/hll8MzzfZlU
Tomas Vaneks retarded penalty shot awarded against the Islanders: http://youtu.be/WwUA9IPZrkE
Shannaban’s worst suspension (probably ever) and a double major awarded to Pierre-Marc Bouchard after BJ’s Matt Calvert lifts his stick into his face: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkCu26Zz-nE
Which one do you guys think wins the 11-12 seasons “worst call” award

The penalty shot
The Bouchard penalty was a good call.

I'm not so sure on the penalty shot either
While I question whether there was truly intent to knock the net off, I can understand how the ref got to that decision.
The Isles player skates into the net with no help from anyone else around him. Sure on replay it appears he stumbles (and I have not doubt he did) but he still knocked the net off on his own.
And per the rulebook:
A minor penalty shall be imposed on any player who delays the game by deliberately displacing a goal post from its normal position.
The rulebook also states:
If by reason of insufficient time in the regular playing time or by reason of penalties already imposed, the minor penalty assessed to a player for deliberately displacing his own goal post cannot be served in its entirety within the regular playing time of the game or at any time in overtime, a penalty shot shall be awarded against the offending team.
The play occured with 1:37 left in the third with the Isles holding a 1 goal lead. Per the rule, a penalty shot, rather than a minor penalty, was correct.
As I said, there can be some debate as to how deliberate the action was, I can certainly see how, when watching a player skate on his own into his own net to dislodge it, the ref came to this conclusion. And it’s not such a bad thing to have it called. There are already players who dive to draw hooks and trips that didn’t happen. Do we really want to have players taking dives to dislodge the net and get a stoppage in play?
If we want to talk about bad penalty shot calls, how about the one where Lidstrom waves his stick in the direction of a streaking Hawks player and they are awarded a penalty shot. There’s a truly bad call.

Is the second quote a continuation of the rule regarding the first?
I absolutely do not believe the net was knocked off deliberately. There are rules in place to give a guy a delay of game for clumsily knocking his own net off.

It is. Rule 63.2 is the minor penalty. Rule 63.5 is the penalty shot.
So, what I believe happened is the ref thought it was deliberate enough for a DoG penalty to be called. And per the rules, if there are less than 2 minutes left in the game, a penalty shot is to be called.
And I agree with you in that I don’t think it was deliberate either, but I can see how the ref, in real time (and from the top of the zone) could come to that conclusion.

Rangers goalie interference: in the aftermath of the Miller run by Lucic fiasco, the NHL decided that players chasing down the puck aren’t allowed to bulldoze goalies (even out of the crease). Good call.
Buffalo penalty shot: does it really matter if the Islander was intentionally stupid or just plain stupid? Good call.
Pierre-Marc Bouchard: using your stick like an axe is reckless. Especially after it has been lifted to shoulder height in the scrum for position/the puck after a faceoff. Reckless and pointless act results in injury to opposing player. There is no need for Pierre-Marc Bouchard’s stick to be traveling at that velocity in the general direction of Matt Calvert’s throat; ever. Good call, good suspension.

I'm just going to copy-and-paste my comment at the SLGT article over here.
while Pavel Datsyuk got nothing for an elbow to the face of Barret Jackman.
Probably because it wasn’t an elbow, and to continue to categorize it as such despite the evidence which shows clearly that Datsyuk’s elbow does not start two inches below his shoulder is not only irresponsible, but also damaging to one’s credibility.
On top of that, you have what appear to be great discrepancies in the number of penalties called between the Blues and their opponents.
Blues penalties taken (raw count): 223
Blues’ opponents’ penalties taken: 217
GREAT DISCREPANCY: 6
Ottawa’s discrepancy: 36
Tampa Bay’s: 24
Dallas’: 26
Oh, and just because I know you’re all Curious… Detroit’s GREAT PENALTY DISCREPANCY: -4

I just went and looked up the hit on Jackman.
Boy is he a whiny pussy. Dishes out plenty of cross checks and cheap shots, but as soon as someone lays a hit on him he gets completely butthurt.

He kind of flails his head back quite a lot for a hit where the principle point of contact is the shoulder/collar bone.

Interesting note
The Wings lead the league in bench minors with 8. That doesn’t include the TMM that should have been called in OT against the Hawks that caused Edzo to have a stroke.
Looking at Powerplay Opportunities (PPO) vs. Times Short Handed (TSH)
Of some teams…
Detroit PPO 166, TSH 161 = +5 PPO
Boston PPO 154, TSH 162 = -4 PPO
Vancouver PPO 185, TSH 183 = +2 PPO
St. Louis PPO 160, TSH 155 = +5 PPO
In fact, the bulk of teams are within +/- 10. There are some outliers on each side (SJ, CHI, FLA on the + side. OTT, WPG, TBL on the – side) but overall it’s pretty consistent in the middle. Having a 13.8% and 27th ranked powerplay is the much bigger issue.
How dare you!
Seguin got called for diving last night. True story. Local media here has been pretty quiet about it. A Bruin would NEVER dive is all I’ve heard the last 2+ years. That’s only for Canucks and Habs.

It seems to me that if the refs just called what they saw and didn’t make an effort to “level the playing field,” that these numbers would not be so close to 0.

Which is the exact counter-point to the Blues fans' whining
The refs are probably working more to keep teams even in penalties than they are biased for/against any set of teams for any reason.
Yes
The commenters in their thread over there are ridiculous. I was following it all day. I commend JJ for trying to reason with them, but they are hopeless. Normally I love to jump into a good interwebz argument, but they are so ignorant I just can’t find the motivation to type out a comment to post over there.

Just venting here.
When I went back home recently, I went to a mall near Detroit and I saw Wings shirts everywhere. I’m at a mall just outside of DC where I live now and I haven’t see one Capitals shirt. In fact, I can’t remember when I’ve seen one last. When they were doing really well and on the day the Wings came to town, Caps stuff was everywhere. AND the local news reported that the “fans” were booing them last night.

Yeah, I noticed that even in the airport at Detroit. There was hockey stuff! Didn’t see that at Chicago, didn’t expect it at Atlanta and definitely nothing in DC. Buffalo had some Sabres stuff that I saw around town. Also, to be fair to Columbus, they do advertise their team well. Other than the Buckeyes I guess they are the only show in town. It’s a shame they suck so bad. I think it could take off here.

I find it weird
If you let it stretch and count the “red” in Predators, there are five teams in the NHL with colors in their name, all of them in the Central.

Huh.
