Ales Hemsky Rumors
There are a TON of rumors circulating right now that the Wings are about to pull the trigger on a Hemsky deal with Edmonton. Malik reports that the "braintrust" for the Wings is currently meeting in Vegas and no deal will happen until those meetings conclude, but this has been gaining heat since The Edmonton Journal first reports on it at the end of December. It's been a while since I have heard a rumor so strong circulating the Wings, so I am going to give it a bit more credit than the usual fare (generally involving Nashville defensemen).
His career stats aren't terrible, that much is for sure. For the most part, he's a point-per-game player, though his stats have seen a hit this season due to these two guys named Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. That said, health is a major issue for him. He's played in 523 of 702 possible games in his 8 year career and he has missed 1/4 of this season.
His cap hit is $4.1 million, so we can definitely absorb him with our cap space. This is the final year of his deal, though, so this could just end up being a rental.
So... what does everyone think of Hemsky? Would he be a good trade? What is he worth?

Based on the trade that took Ponikarovsky from Carolina to New Jersey
I’m thinking that Kindl and a mid-round pick might be enough to get him.
The Oilers are in bad need of an NHL-caliber defenseman. Hemsky is obviously worth quite a bit more than Ponikarovsky, but when you think that all it took to land him was a mid-to-high-level prospect and a 4th rounder, I think Kindl and a 3rd/4th makes up the difference.

First i want to know what line he will be on
If if is with Dats, Kindle and a mid round pick for him will be a steal because if dats can make bert look good what can he do with Hemsky …. this guy is incredibly talented and extremely tough. I hear everywhere that he is soft and often injured but the reason he is often injured is because he is willing to do the dirty work an with his body size he really shouldn’t….. can’t hate on the effort.
as for a rental
IDK…. if we are going to give a young D man and a pick i think they believe they can re-sign him at some point … and why wouldn’t they.
All depends where he fits in.
I don’t see the Wings trading for someone who will play on the Third line.
Franzen – Datsyuk – Bert
Has been a good line and recently they have the highest points for a Wings line. And have been red hot recently.
Hudler – Zetternurg – Filppula
Are right behind the first line in combined points.
Is he really an upgrade over those guys? I am not sure he is and that is why I have to say no for him. I would still be looking at Parise or Ryan.
That's a toughie...
where would he fit in best…our top two lines are really clicking and I’d hate to break the chemistry of our 3rd line. Miller – Helm – Cleary are playing hard, hustle hockey.
Makes me think that Hudler would have to move in order for Hemsky to wear a winged wheel.
I'd pass on Hemsky if you have to give up Kindl
Yeah the Oilers want some value in return, but I only want Kindl traded if it means a bigger name is coming back.
Brendan Smith fan
If he could stay healthy, he’d be one of the best offensive players in the league. 2009: 22 points in 22 games. 2010: 42 in 47 (this year, 17 in 33). The problem is he’s been injured far too much recently which makes trading for him (especially offering Kindl) a big risk. I’d rather we try and trade a late round draft pick for Smyth
You sound like a manure salesman with a mouthful of samples.
Maybe it's just me...
But I really like Kindl. I like the idea of him and Smith being the basis for our future on the blue lines.
Plus, maybe it’s just the kid in me, but I really want to see us make a big splash and go after Parise. At the very least I’d rather us just save the cash for the offseason to go after Weber/Suter/Parise/etc considering it could be a big summer for us considering TPH might retire, Homer probably will, etc.
That said, I trust Kenny H to know infinitely better than I do.
Brad Stuart should be our backup goalie.
Twitter- @nkehagias
If TPH retires, then we have the cash for a top level free agent.
Next season we also save cash with Homer and possibly Bertuzzi coming off the books and Nyquist/Tatar joining the team.
The team needs to add at the trade deadline. The opposition will be adding. Remaining stagnant with a boatload of good prospects and money is not a good idea.
I love Kindl. If you feel like going back through my old posts, I’ve been hyping him since 2009-ish. That said… at this point, trading away Kindl would mean we have roster room next season to re-sign Stuart, bring Smith up full time and have room for either Lidstrom or someone like Suter or Weber. Trading Kindl may be a blessing in disguise in more ways than one, especially if Hemsky worked out.
As it stands right now, we would have to choose between playing Kindl as #7 next season, holding back Smith another year (which, as Jeff will agree, is not an option), not sign Stuart, or let Stuart be the big free agent on defense. We have a huge issue with roster space on the blue line (and in the forward corps, for that matter) for next season that trading Kindl could solve.
Also worth pointing out, trading for a forward without sending one out will mean we have to say good-bye to Mursak, Emmerton, or Miller, unfortunately, and Eaves will likely be pushed out of the top 4 lines as well.

I don't think it's the right time to move Kindl
unless we move Hudler as well. But I also don’t feel like its the right time to move Hudler either. The 2nd line is playing really well and I’d hate to bust up that chemistry right now.
I just don’t see Holland making a move unless someone really blows us away with a deal, and this is not that deal.
You might say, why not move Miller then, but Miller (and Eaves when he comes back) are vital to our PK. Hemsky is not a PK guy. So it doesn’t make sense moving Miller prior to Eaves return, which then negates the reason for moving Miller because that roster spot is no longer open for Hemsky.
Kindl is the key
If we give up Kindl now and don’t get Suter and/or Weber, then I think it’s a horrible trade (with the assumption that Lids retires).
But if we get one of the two aforementioned D plus Stuart returning, then I think we’re looking at our D being the following:
Weber/Suter – White
Kronwall – Stuart
Smith – Ericcsson
I don’t know who the 7th D will be, but probably someone similar to Commodore.
I like Kindl. I think he’s a solid 5/6 D that could become a 3/4 in a pinch (but not long term). He’s perfect for the role he’s in right now. He can go stretches without playing but comes in and plays solid, though not spectacular defense.
Like I said, if we trade Kindl, we HAVE to get Weber or Suter.
You forgot Lidstrom. :((((((((((((((((((((((

Lol I was kidding
The internet needs a sarcasm button. I was just sad to see no Lidstrom with the D after he’s been there for 20 years :(

We are not getting Suter or Weber via trade during the season.
If Nashville were out of the playoff picture: maybe. NO team with a stranglehold on a playoff spot trades their best players for prospects. If one of those two are on Detroit next season, it’s because of free agency or trading their rights away after the season ends. Nashville has a smart front office. A cheap one, but smart.
Pierre McGuire is a blithering dimwit.
I wasn't suggesting
that we would get them via trade during the season, rather during the offseason.
I'm still against moving Kindl.
especially for someone like Hemsky. Hemsky has a pass first mentality much like a lot of the top-six forwards we have in detroit. He VERY rarely shoots and can be seen like a Filppula type of player, who can carry the puck and make passes. I do not think Hemsky is the type of player that we need. We need someone that can finish plays with a shot and that goes to the dirty areas to score some goals. I know it’s a limited market but I just don’t see us succeed without a legit goal scorer.
What I’ve seen, Kindl looks very physical in his own zone and can make good first passes to start the rush up. I am well aware of some of the breakdowns in defensive positioning but he is still young and does not have a full-season under his belt yet.
Moving Kindl means if there is an injury at the back-end, our next go to guys will be Janik or Smith. I think it’s more likely we see Detroit keep Kindl (remember, a very rare detroit first round pick) and see us deal prospects/picks instead.
good points
giving us a solid forward at the cost of a solid d man does not work well with our current depth.
We have seen several GR callups this season that could do decent work on the 4th line when they are needed. On the chance Det makes a deep run (which if your making these trades thats what you expect) it is pretty likely we see 1-2 older guys go down with injuries. Homer, Lidstrom, Pav, Z, Cleary, Stuart are all candidates that could go out for a time.
It just feels like getting a forawrd who shouldnt crack top 6 and losing a contirbuting D man. But hey, we’ll see what deal actually goes through. Im anxious to see what happens with hudler.
Am I the only one who occasionally thinks about what our lineup would look like with one more piece?
Gives me chills.
Franzen – Datsyuk – Bert (I would potentially like to push one of the two down a line, but it’s hard to argue with their chemistry right now)
Parise – Zetternurg – Filppula (puts a big scoring forward with Hank and Flip so they have someone to go do the dirty work)
Suddenly we have a third line of Happy-Helm-Cleary and a fourth with Homer-Abby-and whichever forwards we still had after the trade if we make Emmerton, Mursak, Miller or Eaves part of the deal. We have young pieces here that we could part with.
Every time I look at our lineup, it strikes me that we are one winger away from being unbelievably, maybe unmatchably, deep.
Tear it apart as you will, but I’ve wanted to write this down for a while, and this seemed like the place to put it, as long as we’re discussing what to give up in exchange for what.
Brad Stuart should be our backup goalie.
Twitter- @nkehagias
I would love to have Parise
The problem is that the Devils are going to want an extreme package of prospects and picks for him and there would be no guarantee he’d stay (unless I’m wrong he is a UFA after this season).
On top of the high risk of it all, the Devils are in the middle of the playoff jumble in the East, no reason for them to move such a key cog in their offense. If they falter between now and the deadline, maybe something could get done, but not while they still have a legit shot at making the playoffs.
Consequences Schmonsequences.
The guys over at NOHS think differently.
http://nightmareonhelmstreet.com/2012-articles/january/parise-watch-update.html
If it really is possible for draft picks, then by God we should make a run.
Regarding my post, it doesn’t have to be Parise, he was just my example of a big scoring forward.
Brad Stuart should be our backup goalie.
Twitter- @nkehagias
If its possible for picks
By Helm we better make a run at him. And if the Devils are as cash strapped as that report makes it sound, all the better for us.
Consequences Schmonsequences.
I'd take
Vrbata from Phoenix – right hand shot, and he can shoot!
Parise – but I think he’s gonna cost too much.
Ryder or Benn – from Dallas – I doubt they’ll be shopping either one
Rick Nash – that would be hard to get him away from Columbus – inter divisional trades are really tough to do (unless you’re absolutely f-ing blind like Chicago was when we got Chelli).
Tuomo Ruutu
I often hear his name coming to Detroit in trade rumors. I likes him too. Carolina is already starting their purge. Probably a good for 20-25 goals in a full year, and is a very physical checking forward. 300 hits last year, on pace for maybe 180 this year. Could be a nice gritty addition, especially since Helm and Abby no longer seem to be the ‘hit everything that moves’ players they used to be.
Problem is that Ruutu is one of the most coveted players in the league at the moment. It seems like half of the teams are being considered possible landing spots for him. The price for Ruutu will likely be higher than Hemsky by quite a bit
by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jan 23, 2012 6:33 PM CST up reply actions
You really think so?
He’s most likely going to be a rental and his career numbers are 126-165-291 with a -34 in 511 games whereas Hemsky has a line of 118-294-412 with a -21 in 524 games. They’re both 28…do the injury concerns really kill Hemsky’s value/vault Ruutu’s that much?
No, Hemsky just isn’t that much of a desired player around the league. Ruutu will be the prize of this year’s deadline. That’s the consensus right now. And for that reason, his trade value is much, much higher than Hemsky
by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jan 24, 2012 9:26 AM CST up reply actions
Good to know
…i thought he was an under the radar guy. Hadn’t heard that everyone was looking at him.
To be fair though…Parise will be the prize at the deadline this year, along with Weber/Suter if they go. I doubt they do, but Parise will almost certainly be moved. Ruutu will be an awesome addition to any team, but the deadline prize?
No, Ruutu will be the prize because 20-25 teams are all trying to pry him from Carolina. There are only a few teams out there with any real chance at getting Parise, Suter, or Weber.

do you think
maybe with Brad Stuart’s contract being up and the well publicized possibility of him going to a CA team, that the Red Wings might move him at the deadline rather than lose him as a FA?
Maybe for Teemu Selanne?
I believe Selanne has stated he will retire as a Duck, no matter what. Just like Yzerman did in the prime of his career.

I think Stuart moving is a real possibility
…as sad as that is. If he tells Kenny he plans to move back to Cali, I can see him getting offloaded. If we do move him, we will definitely need someone to replace his minutes in the playoffs. He’s been maybe our best defensive defencemen this year… Honestly, I’d rather keep him as I don’t think (via trade) there’s a Dman out there right now that could replace him in our system that quickly, and he will be uber valuable if we go on a deep run.
That's not Holland's way.
I have a hard time seeing him do that. IMO that would be a disrespectful thing to do to a player, especially Stuart, and Kenny and the Wings have a reputation of treating players with a lot of respect. I honestly have a hard time imagining this scenario.

I think Stuart is a key piece to our run at the Stanley Cup
Right now he gives us the best shot at the cup. I don’t think we’re going to find a White/Stuart right now in the middle of the season. We’re looking for the cup this year and that is the only thing that matters right now.
I'm a Homer

I don't think so
If he tells Kenny he plans to move back to Cali, I can see him getting offloaded.
Kenny is thinking Stanley Cup this year, rightfully so. Losing such a solid D-man (leading all RW defense in CSSI adjusted plus/minus) is not a good way to win the Stanley Cup.
Any trade that involved Stuart would also need to involve:
1.a similarly talented defender
2. be preceded by a separate deal whereby the Wings acquire a similarly talented defender
3. return an offensive star powerful enough to make up for the higher goals against the Wings are likely to suffer on Stuarts departure.
