Around SBN: The Most Dangerous Division in Sports

Let's get round 2 underway. Over 2/3rd's of the nominees gone, now it gets interesting

And what better way to start than with a video involving two of the candidates.

The new "reformed" Matt Cooke (he of the 16 PIMS this season) hits Barrett Jackman, who dives like he's Joe Thorton headfirst into the boards.

So it seems Jackman's wasting no time off the bat trying to get votes. What a champ.

Star-divide

And so, without further ado, the 8+ players who advanced to round 2! 3 words short.

Just watched that video a few times

And although I find it hard to believe that anyone would a) willingly go into the boards like that intentionnaly (injury) or b) make a hit like that look worse than it is to muck up the boarding/headshot/suspension rulings, thus interfering with enforcement designed to increase player safety…

I can’t help but feel something doesn’t look right about it. The pieces don’t all add up. Jackman goes into the boards much harder than the little push could have sent him, he gets his hands up to protect himself in time (I tried to see if his head actually connected with the glass…extremely hard to tell from the angle).

Finally…the announcers have it wrong. Jackman “braces” (read: brakes) but then…stops breaking so as to go into the boards harder? I don’t see the corkscrew motion either…the stick is long gone before Jackman starts rotating.

I don’t like either of the players…but you are correct, this reeks of dive. The two deserve each other.

cooke's reaction

is the biggest indicator for me. He is immediately confused as to what just happened.

Im still not confident enough to rule this one way or the other though.

I wonder if Shanahan will call both of them in for interviews on the play?

Personal opinion on the hit.

Cooke goes in hard after Jackman into the corner. Jackman see him coming and braces for the hit and feels Cooke’s stick, which makes him react as though its not a hit. Cooke makes contact and he lost an edge as he was looking for the puck that had gotten by him. Cooke didn’t hit through the numbers, first contact is the shoulder. Personally I agree with the call on the ice, boarding but only a minor. Jackman has to be aware of where he is on the ice and not turn at the last second. Cooke has to be mindful of the boards.

Given the facts I would expect a call, but not a suspension. Unless they believe that Cooke could have stopped his check when Jackman turned.

Sorry, I was wrong.

The puck was not passed him. I don’t believe his stick caused him to turn like that so I am not sure what Jackman was doing. Also of note, 3.5 second mark, clearly shows Cooke and Jackman’s positioning, and cooke comes from the side not the numbers.

Sorry, but no video will sway my initial vote.

Chris Pronger will be my vote until he retires. (It would be unfortunate if he went out with this concussion… No one should have to go through that.)

If anything, I think Jackman should get a call from Shanahan for embellishment. That was little worse than the Zetterberg hit. I don’t like Cooke, but he has made MAJOR strides to clean up his game and even he doesn’t know what happened when Jackman went down. The fact that he looks confused at the refs instead of bracing for a fight is a lot more telling than the Jackman injury.

welp

since Burrows is gone, i’ll just go with Thornton.

You wanna tell me that to mah face?!

Welp, unsurprisingly Thorton and Pronger are battling it out whilst everyone else wallows in mediocrity

I wonder what happened to Sidney Christ who hasn’t received a 4th of the votes he did last time.

You sound like a manure salesman with a mouthful of samples.
