I've said it before and I'll say it again: If this team wins the Stanley Cup this year it's going to be because of Jimmy Howard. People on the outside might just want to credit the Red Wings system and knock Jimmy because he plays behind Lidstrom, but those who watch this kid every night know just how good he is. I am thrilled with our results so far, but I don’t necessarily think we are more prepared to face playoff-mode San Jose now than we were last year. Mobile d-man or powerful winger please!

Yup
I won’t feel overly confident about this team until we take it to the Sharks. That will be THE test for me. I still secretly hope they don’t make it into the playoffs this year.

Jesus, that Jackman dive is brutally stupid
I know that there’s absolutely no precedent for it, but I’d actually like to see Jackman suspended for recklessly endangering a player… himself.
Jackman and Cooke chase the puck in to the boards with both players knowing the defender will get there first. Jackman looks over his shoulder to make sure he gets the angle so he can accept the inevitable contact without getting knocked off the puck. As he approaches the boards, Jackman sets his feet to slide in directly over the puck. Cooke makes sure to come up the side so that he gets an arm on the side of Jackman’s outer shoulder and begins pushing directly against the direction that Jackman has his feet set.
While Cooke is finishing this completely clean check, Jackman decides to abandon having his feet set and instead turns them in so the rest of Matt Cooke’s check drives him into the boards.
It’s absolutely hilarious that they’re talking about the “extension of the arms” – the whole reason Cooke’s arms end up like that is because he’s not ready for Jackman to have turned himself to face the boards.
This is absolutely fucking shameful by Jackman and I’d like if the league addressed the problem a lot of people have been worried about with people embellishing contact like this in order to draw calls. Jackman intentionally put himself into a dangerous situation to take advantage of a player’s history and the paranoia about boarding. I hate this play every bit as much as I hate Chris Stewart coming off the bench on a line change to instigate a fight after seeing a clean hit on his teammate.

Won't get into another Jackman discussion with you...
I think you can probably guess my thoughts on this, if you haven’t read over at SLGT already. But like I said over there, while there are a lot of Cooke haters, I think you guys over here hate Jackman just a liiiiiiiiiitle bit more!!
by TheFlyingCavallinis on Jan 25, 2012 11:48 AM CST up reply actions
I'm not welcome to discuss this issue at SLGT
But I have read your thoughts.
I disagree with your assertion that whomever disagrees with you doesn’t understand physics. Watching that hit, Jackman changes the position of his skates after contact with Cooke is initiated. I say he did it purposefully.
Whether or not that is the truth (and that is truly the part of this discussion which is up for debate) is arguable.
However, if Jackman’s skates don’t change position, this is a clean hit by Cooke. I understand the very fast nature of the game and what the refs saw and I don’t blame them for making this call. However, calls for harsher punishment or even supplemental discipline for Cooke are out of line.
by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 25, 2012 12:17 PM CST up reply actions
OK
My only point is that I think it was a penalty and Jackman didn’t dive. I didn’t think it should have gotten anything more or less.
And think about this. Jackman looked to his right before reaching the boards. Cooke was to his right. Then he felt a slight hook to his right indicating Cooke was still there. Jackman turns his skates to brace himself for a hit and to shield the puck from the player bearing down on him. Cooke then moved to the left and pushed him into the boards with a shoving motion. Same thing Zet did a few games ago. Was it malicious? No. Did it deserve a penalty? Yes. Was it a dive? No. Say what you will about Jackman, but he is not a diver. And from what I have read over here, it doesn’t sound like he is capable of much more than primitive thought, so any premeditated dive is giving him too much credit, right :)
And I agree, making a blanket statement about people calling this a dive are not all morons.

In addition
The referee was in the absolute PERFECT position to make this call.

Same thing Zet did a few games ago
This is patently false. First of all, you can tell this by the difference of where Cooke’s hand first contacted Jackman (the shoulder) and where Zetterberg’s hand touched Nikitin (the back). Secondly, Brendan Shanahan updated yesterday that both Zetterberg AND Nikitin stressed that there was NO push in that situation. They are not similar at all.
Cooke didn’t move to the left, he kept a straight line the entire way in. No matter how much fun we make of Barret Jackman, I don’t believe he’s so stupid as to not know the positioning of the forechecking forward bearing down on him. I also DO believe that he’s both smart enough to realize the positioning AND dumb enough to actually plant himself face-first into the boards to draw a penalty.
As far as the ref is concerned and how he’s positioned; Yes, he was in the perfect position, but it took me watching this in slow-motion to realize what happened. He had to make the call right that instant. I don’t blame him for using his discretion to say that he didn’t see enough of Jackman putting himself in a vulnerable position.

So where are they similar?
Zetterberg’s boarding penalty was rescinded by the league – the NHL said there was no boarding by Zetterberg in that situation. They said this because the two players who can possibly know what it felt like BOTH said that there was no push.
The mere fact the Zetterberg/Nikitin incident was decidedly NOT boarding and that you say the Cooke hit was boarding means that the two incidences are not similar at all.
Once again, Nikita Nikitin… the guy who fell into the boards awkwardly… THE ONLY PERSON WHO MEETS ANDY SUTTON’S DEFINITION OF BEING AN “EXPERT” IN THIS SITUATION says that Zetterberg doesn’t push him.
You said Zetterberg shoved him. The guy who you said got shoved said there was no shove. Your basis for comparison is gone.

I have a question
Since the league rescinded Z’s penalty, does that mean I’ll lose the 15 PIMs I got for that? I hope that doesn’t cost me any points in either of my leagues. I just returned to my rightful position at the top of the WIIM Filppula league this week and I don’t want to give it up so soon.
Follow me on Twitter -- @zfan16
I'm actually not sure
I don’t think they will, since the stat is still showing up on NHL.com.
I think the fact that they rescinded it is more for the case of counting majors and misconducts for repeat offender status.
by J.J. from Kansas on Jan 25, 2012 4:15 PM CST up reply actions
You can’t tell how much force Cooke used by and video. What you can tell his the position of Jackman’s skates, the angle and direction of contact by Cooke, and the angle of Jackman’s body when he hit the boards. If you stop the video and look at the initial contact, Jackman should have gone into the boards shoulder first. Instead, his face (mostly forearms and knee) go into the glass/boards. In other words, all the rotation came from Jackman himself, not from any external force.
Two possibilities are left: Jackman flinched and tried to turn away from the hit (which is silly, because it wasn’t going to be big as Cooke was mostly to the left and at a bad angle for power) OR Jackman purposely turned to draw a penalty (knowing that Cooke couldn’t provide a big push, thereby reducing the chance he would be injured on the play). Either way, Cooke is unfortunately innocent of any infraction.
Be happy with the two minute gimme you got.
Oh, and the Z hit…well, there was no hit. Nikitin lost an edge. Thankfully he appears to be OK.
Manager of the Mursak League's Banzai Bananas. BANZAI!!!
Again
I’m not calling for Cooke’s head. I am solely frustrated that people think Jackman dove. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. Jaxx may get a little overzealous with the stick at time, make some dumb plays, and get under opposing teams’ skin… but a diver he is not.
And I think 2 minutes was deserved by Cooke, but to be honest, if he wouldn’t have gotten anything I could understand it too.

2 minutes was the right call
but…
a diver he is not
the footage seems to disagree
by Red, White and a Mile high on Jan 25, 2012 1:04 PM CST up reply actions
I personally don't see a dive
But I do see a defender not putting any effort in bracing for an impact but rather twisting to go for a puck. Putting himself in a vulnerable position. I don’t know why the hell he would do that (he certainly saw Cooke coming), and I wouldn’t eliminate the possibility of a dive/trying-to-draw-a-penalty, but whatever the reason Jackman is not blameless in how that hit looked. The 2 minutes was questionable at best, though not a terrible penalty call.
Jaxx skates change position
at the exact moment the puck moves down the boards in front of him as if he is going to play the puck. His head is looking directly at the puck as if he is going to play it. He braces for the hit as he goes to the corner, watches the puck and begins to move his feet to change directions to play the puck, at the exact same time he does change his skates he gets contact. Maybe he falls off balance, maybe the push was forceful enough to get him off his skates. Either way, no dive.
by TheFlyingCavallinis on Jan 25, 2012 1:11 PM CST up reply actions
But he didn't brace for the hit
Because if he did, he wouldn’t have hit the boards like that face first. And he should have, because he would have actually had a chance to play and control the puck. As it was, he drew a penalty. But damn, he could have gotten injured by doing that.
If he did brace himself, he did a really piss poor job.
I think he braced for a hit
coming from a different point than where it was actually made. I don’t know. I just know that Jackman doesn’t dive. Maybe he is adding that little wrinkle to his game after a decade in the league? Players do change as they age I guess.

I don’t remember which (could be both, idk) but you’ve certainly had your fair share of arguments over here recently. And as to your last point, what do you expect? That a site full of red wings fans would take kindly to someone from a rival site venturing over and contesting every incident that occurred? I don’t think it was intentionally done or malicious in anyway (can’t say that for most SLGT members) but it just seemed to me that every discussion you entered turned heated quite quickly.
No when I come over here it is for a different point of view

Though I have to imagine they’d complain that we’re still getting cheap points.
It would work the other way
If they weren’t so bad at shootouts, they’d say that while they didn’t like them, they were more than happy to secure points in that fashion.

I love baseball as a sport first, but watching hockey on tv is such a more exciting thing that it comes above watching baseball. Playoff OT is unreal, it’s the best thing in sports. Thank you for this!
Now I’m imagining Huds needing the trainer to help him hold the cup.
I'm a Homer
Hudler sitting on Bert's shoulders hoisting the Cup...
still might not get it higher than Chara did last year.

Didn't Pierre Maguire tweet this after Chicago game a couple weeks ago?

He may have...
Because during an in-game interview with Bertuzzi, he said that Bertuzzi was a Cup champion.
Pierre McGuire is a blithering dimwit.
That would require me to follow Pierre on twitter.
I can’t afford a new monitor every time I would smash it if that were the case.

Just watched the Cooke hit.
Can’t argue with the ref calling a penalty at game speed, but Jackman most certainly shares blame in it and it isn’t anywhere near suspendable (the penalty itself was questionable). I agree with JJ…Jackman twisted himself to play the puck going by him and in so doing put himself in a vulnerable position. It was stupid because he KNEW Cooke was there behind him, and I even think he knew a hit was coming. He just didn’t do enough (or anything, really) to brace for a hit. What he should have done was meet Cooke’s hit with a shoulder of his own so that he could play the puck.
Whether he twisted like that on purpose to draw the penalty…I’m not so inclined to think that. I have a hard time thinking a defender would be so dumb to let somebody hit them into the boards like that face first. The puck was right there, so I’m more inclined to believe he was going for the puck and just didn’t think Cooke would check him as hard as he did into the boards.
Bottom line, the 2 minute call was questionable but understandable. Suspension-worthy…nowhere near that ballpark, even for a dirty scumbag like Cooke.
This is about exactly what my thoughts on the situation are.
If you watch the entire play, every move Jackman makes is coordinated with where the puck is and where he expects Cooke to be. Thanks for being fair minded on this.

I think we're all arguing semantics
I don’t think anyone here has a truly ridiculous interpretation of the hit. Reality probably falls somewhere in between. Either jackman made a conscious decision to draw a penalty (which can be construed as diving to some depending on how they define it), or he didn’t brace himself enough while simultaneously twisting to receive the puck (aka “puck watching”). Given the evidence, I think both stances are arguable. Without asking Jackman himself, we’ll never really know.
I get physics
Jackman tried to draw a major by defying them. I’d be able to take a check like that from Cooke any day without fear for my health at all. He barely shoved him.
