Discussion: What would you give up for Weber or Parise? Be please be realistic too. You're not getting either guy for Hudler and a first round pick. You have to give up something of significance to get something of significance. It will take a hell of a lot to get Weber too because he's in the division.
Let's Go Red Wings.

Honestly
I’m not sure who I’d realistically give up for Weber because I’m not sure there’s a package of players that makes sense for both teams. Kindl & Hudler are probably part of either deal, but I’m just not convinced either Nashville or Jersey takes them. We may have to lose a talented prospect like Tatar along the way as well.
I just don’t even think that’s being realistic, but I’m not interested in trading away Filppula or Franzen, who are more likely to be part of the realistic price for them.

As far as prospects go...
…anyone not named Smith, Nyquist, Pulkkinen and Jurco is fair game.
I’d trade Mrazek (his stock is high) and Janrkrok and Tatar are in play. I’d even consider Sheahan too. On the main roster, not too many trade-able assets other than Filppula, Kindl, and Helm. And I’d really only want to give up Kindl. I’d have to think long and hard about trading Flip. Depends what exactly comes back in return.

Has Commodore's play made Kindl expendable?
If the Wings were realistically going to get a player like Parise or Weber, it’s going to cost them in terms of both prospects and roster players.
Like you said, Smith, Nyquist, Pulkkinen and Jurco would be untouchables for me. Anyone else, including from the current roster (besides the obvious ones) would be fine.
Basically, as long as the team was legitimately better by making the trade, I’m ok with whoever they give up.
I'd trade away Franzen in an instant for Parise
Mule has all the talent in the world to be a 40 goal scorer, but he never will be because he’s lazy. Case in point during the first period last night – he could have had an easy goal after a great pass from Pav (?) but instead of firing it in like Mickey pointed out, he lazily tried to guide it in and Lehtonen was able to get over in time.
I’d give up Franzen, a first + second (could be separate years) and maybe an expendable prospect like Tatar. Kindl could easily be involved too, but I’d rather hang on to him
absolutely
… Everyone we have would have been in play for me at the start if the season, and if I was Nashville I wouldn’t consider a deal that doesn’t include Smith.
But when we’re talking about a physical player coming off an ‘out indefinitely’ respite, I’m inclined to play hardball. Or start talking about Suter.

WJC
It was a hell of a comeback last night, even if Canada fell short. Russia was one of the favourites heading into the tournament, so there’s no shame in losing to them.
The only thing I don’t like is seeing all the American fans take such pleasure in seeing the Canadian kids lose based on the actions of the stupid Canadian crowd. As a Canadian, I’m embarrassed that the fans at the games were so vocal in cheering against the Americans, especially in games that didn’t involve Canada, but these are 18-19 year old kids who are playing for their country. Regardless of what side you’re on, they should be cheered, or if you’re against them, then stay silent.
Agreed
I understand why it happens. I just don’t get it, at least at the junior level.
Personally, I don’t understand why the Canadian crowd gets so worked up by the Americans and not the Russians. The US has never been a historical rival for Canada, even if they have won a couple of tournaments from them. Russia has been the thorn in the side of the Canadians for a long time.
Basically, the US is the Blues to Canada’s Red Wings.

While I agree with this statement and understand it… I think I just threw up in my mouth for a second.

That could be true
If it weren’t for the US winning exactly 2 games in a tournament they were a favourite in.
Surreal
Based on only seeing the tournament on television, it comes across as a surreal, borderline scary environment. The kids seem more keyed up than usual; that to me partly accounts for the wild comebacks and extra curricular activities. Considering how on edge everybody seems to be it’s a credit to the participants that stuff like 1987 doesn’t happen more often.
From the US perspective, it seems like Canadians regard the WJC as ‘their’ tournament. For a long time it was the only true, annual international measuring stick (I think). And after all the concept of junior hockey was staked out in Canada. I’d be protective of that heritage too.
Don’t know exactly how that relates to antipathy toward the US, but there’s of course larger issues at play too.
by Wizard of Corsica on Jan 4, 2012 8:38 AM CST up reply actions
For a long time, Canada was really the only country that cared about the tournament, and consequently they have dominated it in terms of gold and overall medals. Most of the other countries hadn’t developed the talent to compete with the best 18-19 year old Canadians, which is why they won a lot. However, much like at the NHL and international level, the rest of the world is closer now in terms of overall talent.
Canadians are extremely protective of their status as the best hockey nation, and the WJC was always a place where we could count on our team being the best, and now that’s not even true anymore.
Canadians are extremely protective of their status as the best hockey nation
I think that’s the biggest reason why so many U.S. fans root against Canada at this tournament every year (that, and that Canadians in the crowd for the past two WJC have been overall absolutely horrendously behaved).
Although, it’s not just me rooting against the Canadian juniors because of the crowd and the media, I switched over from the Wings game last night just in time to see a Canadian kid sucker punch a Russian in the throat when the game was still 5-1.

I'd give up a fair bit for both
Stuart+Ericsson/Kindl/Commodore+Forward Prospect+ Plethora of Picks for either one.
Datsyukian Deke, Detroit Red Wings Blog
Follow @cnsportsblogs
They wouldn't want Ericsson or Commodore, Stuart is in a contract year with no reason to re-up with them.
And if I were Nashville, Kindl + prospect + picks probably isn’t enough unless the prospect is at least Nyquist.
A realist trade offer for Weber...
Well that is going to be steep. Not just for our minds as wing’s fans but of hockey fans in general. We are talking about a a true number 1 dman who is entering the prime of his career age wise. You can count on 1 hand the number of dman who you might consider better or his equal. That is the kind of thing that cost a king’s ransom. In addition to that we are talking about a trade with a division rival.
With that background. I say they would DEMAND one of Nyquist/Smith. Given their need for scoring I would think it would be Nyquist. Something along the lines of:
Nyquist/Tatar/Kindl and our first and 3rd round picks.
You might convince them to take a package with more overall talent but less star power. Such as a package of Anderson/Mursak/Tatar/Nestrasil, with one of the recently drafted dmen and a 1st round pick. But I highly doubt they go for that. It almost a guarantee that it will cost one of the top 2 and most likely 2 of the top 5 prospects the wings have.
It safer honestly to wait until FA with Weber or Sutter. The cost of getting either of them in more then prohibitive. If one of Sutter/Weber signs that may change and then you could legitimately think about acquiring the other.

Just wait for the off season
and try to sign one. The price to trade for either if them is too steep in my opinion. That’s not a slight against either player, I just think that it would be better for us in the long run to keep our prospects.

only problems with waiting
is there are quite a few teams in the West with the flexibility to trade for him before the deadline.
Also if we wait til the offseason we run the risk of Nick around when we roll out our shiny new toy.

Why not include Smith in the deal?
Weber is young as hell and is a proven commodity. Smith is only a couple years younger. The only positive on Smith is the cost control. If weber agrees to an extension at a fair price I would include Smith in a heart beat.

Ok.
But given their desire to add scoring would you agree to a deal of Smith/Nyquist and a 1st and 3rd, or Smith/Tatar/Jarnkrok and a 1st and 4th (give or take on the picks).
I am nearly positive that they will ask for Nyquist in any deal since scoring is what they lack and they have solid depth in terms of defense prospects. Weber would be amazing in a winged wheel, but at what cost. And of course this assumes that other teams are not bidding thus increasing the price.
"Hey Laserlips. Your mama was a snowblower."
Oh I have no idea what it will take
nor have any suggestion as to what to give up. I am just saying that to hold Smith as an untouchable in this scenario is pointless because the wings would be getting someone back to play the position that smith plays as well as someone who is better and slightly older.
