Wings miss out in All-Star voting; Jimmy Howard has nice showing as write-in | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com
Jimmy was voted in as an all-star "starter," but the #VoteJimmah campaign did pretty well. He finished 6th among goalies and had more votes than any other write in candidate. Well done, everyone. Have to imagine he'll be the Wings representative when the rest of the players are picked.

Katie Baker's Coldhearted: On Patrice Bergeron, the Bruins, and the rest of the week in the NHL - Grantland
The Bruins won last night 9-0. In their last home game they won 8-0. Their last road game they won 6-1. They lead the league with 11 games of scoring 6 or more goals. The Penguins are second on that list with 4 games with 6 or more goals. Boston also leads the league in goals against per game, Tuukka Rask leads the league in GAA and SV% and Tim Thomas is 3rd and 2nd in those categories respectively. Gross.

I think Kronwall has a chance, but there are a lot of elite and “big name” defensemen who will probably be picked ahead of Kronner – I don’t disagree, I just don’t think he’ll get the call.

I like the comment on the underrated article:
“Loui Eriksson ..Rocks..Trade him to Redwings for Hudler. "
All I want for my B-Day is...
A repeat from last year… Team Lidstrom aka Team Class.. with Marty as assistant, picking Stammer first, was so very awesome! PLUS (getting greedy) the much deserved addition of Kronner, Pavel, Z and of course… Jimmah backing them up!! That would truly be Team Perfect Human aka Team Class! Can throw in Vinny for good measure.
Did I mention my B-Day is on the 26th… the day the teams are “picked?” haha.

And to think I acually traded for him on my fantasy team…and of course now I’m trapped at work and can’t dump him for five hours. ugh.
Don't Panic!
The Winter Classic money
I listened to your podcast this morning…and you guys were discussing the Winter Classic money. As far as I understand it, the teams participating do NOT get a percentage of the gate, so Michigan Stadium having 100,000 seats wouldn’t gross illitch any more in that respect. The teams are financially compensated for what that regular season game WOULD have made in their arena, and the rest of the profit goes to the NHL. In light of that, I’m sure from a financial standpoint, Illitch would prefer the extra bank he’d receive at Comerica Park.
I for one am really hoping it’s at the Big House. Football stadiums are far better for Hockey than Baseball from a viewing perspective, and having 100K ppl there would be pretty awesome. And Comerica is a pretty new stadium so not much history there…and really just not a lot of draw there from a casual fan perspective.
But I think one of the biggest hindrances to a Big House Winter Classic is alcohol sales. I went to Michigan, and it’s the same as any other college stadium, they don’t allow alcohol sales, and I’m not sure they can allow them at any time (even for non collegiate events). Can’t be sure on that, but if it’s true I feel like it might be a dealbreaker.
on the alcohol sales
I could imagine that would definitely be a dealbreaker.

I used to attend professional indoor soccer games at Cleveland State's facility
where the Vikings play NCAA basketball and they were able to serve beer, etc. during the games.

I’m not sure if this was just a special exemption for that specific facility at that time or if it applied to any event there.
they have exemptions
The hard part is getting the stadium’s concession areas setup to dispense beer. I don’t know if the time in effort setting up lines to have kegs would be worth it. I guess an easy solution would be to just have cans and pour it into cups.

i went to Matchsticks and Gasoline (the Flames SBN blog) this morning to see their game thread from last night
i felt kind of bad having a laugh at their expense, but at least they were laughing at their own team too.
You wanna tell me that to mah face?!
YET ANOTHER Detroit Red Wings blog.
I remember checking the scores last night
First time I looked it was like 4-0. Next time I checked it was 6-0. Then 9-0. I still cannot believe no one would trade for Tim Thomas when Boston put him on the market a couple years ago.
Team leaders in GAA
1. Boston (1.82)
2. NYR (2.02)
3. STL (2.07)
4. LA (2.10)
5. Minnesota (2.25)
Detroit (2.25)
Trivia question: What’s the highest amount of goals against the Bruins have allowed in a single game? Answer: 4.
4 fucking goals is the most any team has scored against them.
Also Tuuka Rask leads the league in SV% and GAA. Tuuka Rask for Vezina
The sun is blotted out as Joe Don Baker approaches.
I have something to say about Boston
of Bostons 37 games played they have played a total of 11 games against current playoff teams. Not even a third of their games (Phi-2, chi-1, Sj-1, Ott-2, Det-1, Pit-1, Fla-2, LA-1)
In comparison in Detroits 39 games thus far we have played 21 games against current playoff teams. over 50%!! (Ott-1, Van-2, Min-3, was-1, SJ-2, Stl-4, LA-2, Bos-1, Nsh-3, Pit-1, Chi-1)
interesting
Very interesting stat. I am not going to try and argue they aren’t a really good team but it seems like they never seem to pass up an attempt to wale on inferior competition.
The great hope for the rest of the East, I hope, will be that bringing its A game every night in the regular season plus residual wear from last year catches up with these dudes in the playoffs.

Howard and Lidstrom
I think there are too many other players having better years in front of Datsyuk, so he stays home, and Kronwall has been good offensively, but he’s not an All Star.
Howard will go because he’s easily one of the 6 best goalies this year, and Lidstrom because to have an All-Star Game without Nick is like having french fries without gravy: stupid and irresponsible.
I realize saying this is going to get me lynched but...
Given our current goaltending situation (as in Jimmy playing 99.8% of our games), wouldn’t letting Jimmy rest during the AS break be the best thing for us going forward?

Do you think
that going on Vacation to Ottawa to half-ass 20 minutes of practice hockey is going to tire him out?
I don’t.

No
But not having to travel and instead being able to stay home and rest for a bit wouldn’t hurt any

It's not that the AS game is exerting in any sort of way, it's that it might be the only break Jimmy gets the rest of this season
The sun is blotted out as Joe Don Baker approaches.
True
But being able to go and experience it as a well-respected star (in a place not too far from where he grew up) could be just as energizing for him if not moreso than going home for that weekend.
And Howard has said that he thinks it would be incredibly cool to get to go.

All star Game
Since they will want a representitive from each team 15/21 spots in the west. That leaves room for 6 duplicate team representitives. As much as I think our team is awesome. I know the league will want to fill those extra spots with Chi and Van so…
Who do I think will be our sole representitive – Lidstrom
Who do I think should go – Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Howard
Who would I love to see go – Helm and White
Fun fact
Ilya Bryzgalov was one of the players polled. He voted himself the most underrated player, the only vote he got.

Ha ha!
That is unsurprising, and completely hilarious. Great entertainment for fans & the press, and every coach’s nightmare. Party on, Bryz.

I don’t think he was one of the players polled

That's too bad
But I’m sure had he been, your answer would be dead on.
