I Can't Watch 8 More Years of Franzen

What I'm about to say is still somewhat controversial, however I believe the stance is softening amongst the Wings blogosphere, so I'll just say it.

I can't watch Franzen for 8 more years.

I know, I know. Feed the Mule. Mule-Trick. That Colorado series.

Fuzzy memories shared by all, never to be forgotten. Believe me, that 2008 playoffs will live on forever in my mind.

But, sadly, those memories are looking to be just that: memories. Shades of a better time.

So, while Franzen sits second in scoring on the Red Wings, and first in goals, I make the above statement known because his uninspired, lazy-ass, on-again-off-again play will literally drive me to the brink of insanity. And I doubt it's going to get much better then this.

See, with guys like Filppula and Hudler, there is upside. They are young, they work hard, and even when pucks aren't going in the net, you can take solace in the fact that they tried. Things just didn't go their way. But with Johan, sometimes it's as if he wasn't even at the game. That his mind was on the Smirnoff in his freezer, or his mule slippers at home.

So with Anaheim putting up the for sale sign, please Ken Holland, get a legitimate first line winger. Datsyuk will only be Datsyuk for a few more years. Why waste them with this $4 million player, who plays sometimes but floats more often than not.

Alas, my dreams will doubtfully come to fruition. I foresee a future where Mule's goal-less streaks reach triple digits, and his role becomes that of Fabian Brunnstrom.

If only we had that darn flux capacitor. For Marian could still be a Wing.

*the above was (somewhat) an exaggeration of my feelings regarding Johan Franzen. My real goal is to ask the following question (IN A SHINY POLL)

Damn!

Should’ve edited that poll.

I love how smug he is about how much money he earns.

thats funny

I liked the commercial up until he looked smug

I prefer we at least wait until the end of the postseason before we start this debate up again

2008: 16 games, 18 points
2009: 23 games, 23 points
2010: 12 games, 16 points
2011: 8 games, 3 points (remember he was injured)

Look I don’t care if he plays like he feels asleep (haha obscure reference) for most of the regular season if it means he’s healthy when the playoffs start (The last time he played over 75 regular season games was 05).

You suggest trading him. Ok, what exactly are we getting back in return? Is it enough to make up for the lost production in the playoffs?

The sun is blotted out as Joe Don Baker approaches.

That's a good question

And honestly, I don’t think I have the imagination to dream up a trade scenario that would work because of two things:

1. the length (and dollars) still on his contract
2. his true value to a hockey team

We all know Franzen can score goals. And he does a pretty decent job of it. But, as you say, he’s never played a whole season, and, again as you say, the last time he played an almost complete season he was still a role player.

Is he a 30 goal scorer? Because if he is, that production is hard to replace. Or is he a 20-25 goal scorer? Because those guys aren’t exactly the hardest piece to find.

In my ideal world, Franzen would be our second line winger. He would still be on the team, but he wouldn’t be “the” goal scorer, just because I don’t think that he’s reliable enough. I do value his playoff production, and if the Wings make the playoffs this year, I’m excited to see if he can replicate it.

But back to my ideal world, I would keep Franzen, but I would get someone else. Trade a ton for someone like Parise or (and this is really ideal) Bobby Ryan to play with Datsyuk.

But sadly, like all youth of today, video games have sapped my ability to imagine, and the only trade scenarios I can dream up are:

TO DET: Bobby Ryan
TO ANA: $200 Little Caesar’s Gift Certificate, Doug Janik, and a framed picture of the Wings shaking hands with the Ducks in 2009.

by eight_legged_freaks on Jan 8, 2012 8:21 AM CST up reply actions

I often quote this, and with good reason. This is something that (I believe) Drew Sharp said in a season preview back in 2009 or maybe 2008.

If someone could convince Franzen the regular season means as much as the playoffs do, he’d score more than Ovechkin and Malkin every year

And it’s true. Franzen is one of the best playoff performers we have ever seen. The only better Wing in the playoffs, in my mind, is Ozzy. He just doesn’t do much in the regular season and it is frustrating. That said, I don’t think what he doesn’t do in the regular season (he does call it in sometimes, as you pointed out) outweighs what he does in the postseason. And when he gets hot, there is absolutely no one in this league that can stop him. I think we all underestimate him during the regular season.

Granted, he is one of our most tradeable assets. He’s a mega-scorer at a cap hit of less than $4 million. That’s half Malkin, Ovechkin, and Crosby, and considerably less than this year’s poster-boy scorer Phil Kessel. There isn’t a team in the league that wouldn’t give up $4 million in cap space for Franzen. It’s one of Holland’s miracle deals. But if the right trade came along — Bobby Ryan isn’t quite what I am hoping for here — I don’t think we can say no.

I still wish we had used him to get the first overall pick last year and drafted either Nugent-Hopkins or Adam Larsson, though.

Funny that you mention Phil Kessel

Because I think Franzen’s most comparable player is Phil Kessel.

Both lazy as hell when the puck isn’t on their stick, both extremely lethal when it is.

Only problem is…Kessel is 24 and still can improve, Franzen is 32 and will no doubt be on the decline.

by eight_legged_freaks on Jan 8, 2012 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

That is true, but it is also worth noting that being 32 on the Wings, most of the time, is like being 26-28 on the average team. Our players play long and play well

I will counter your counter point with a parry!

While this fact is true in most cases, you will recall that the Mule has an injury history longer than any grocery list I’ve ever had (and I usually need to shop for everything).

I don’t think he’s as transferable in this department as we’d like to believe.

by eight_legged_freaks on Jan 8, 2012 6:18 PM CST up reply actions

His injury history is a good point to bring up, and one that I tend to forget.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jan 9, 2012 2:21 PM CST up reply actions

I have a plan.

It involves 2 smoking hot hookers, 2 cub scouts, a case of amyl nitrate, an HD video camera and Stan Bowman. If everything works out we’ll have Hossa back and Mule will be Chicago’s IR problem.

by voline on Jan 8, 2012 12:53 PM CST reply actions

Franzen = Drive me crazy

I would like to add 50% of the goals credited to him are already going in the net when he swipes at them and gets credit. (50% might be a little high but not by much). I DO think he is the right contract / production for a second line RW and therefore would not trade him.

I think the bigger issue is why is he playing LW on the first line so that Bertuzzi can play RW?

by Splints on Jan 8, 2012 2:39 PM CST reply actions

To expand on that...

Our lines should look like this:
Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Hudler (or whoever we can trade for Hudler and Bert)
Filppula, Helm, Franzen (Helm lacks finish, Filp is finnish….trust me on this one)
Cleary, Abby, Mursak (When healthy hopefully Mursak performs like we think he can)
Eaves, Emmerton, Miller (Best 4th line in the league…you know it and I know it)

Rotating in – Holmer and Conner

by Splints on Jan 8, 2012 2:50 PM CST up reply actions

Question

Why reunite the Twins? The Z-Flip-Huds line is on fire. Franzen is streaky, but when he’s on, he’s one of the better goal scorers in the league.

I know there were some people who thought it would happen, but Helm is not a 2nd line center. Kid’s awesome, but he’s got no hands.

I like the lines we have now. No need to switch them up.

Every time I see Hossa play I wish we had signed him instead of Franzen.

Every time I see Hosssa play...

I wish him numerous Kronwallings and many embarrassments by Datsyuk and complete rejection and denial by Jimmah.

by SlapshotGoal on Jan 10, 2012 8:54 AM CST up reply actions   2 recs

I enjoy destroying Hossa in NHL 12 (mainly because there is no easier target), but Hossa and Datsyuk were the best pairings the league has seen since Jagr and Lemieux. I love Franzen, but I do wish we still had Hossa.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jan 10, 2012 10:04 AM CST up reply actions

Remember...

If we signed Hossa, then we would have absolutely no depth. Hossa would have commanded a lot more. Just look at the Hawks. They have 4 forwards that are worth anything, that’s it. Because they are top heavy cap wise. Now with Sharp out, they have just 3. Wing’s would not be able to afford Flip, Cleary, and Hudler with Hossa. They would just have a bunch of minor leaguers. Franzen is fine. Next year Bertuzzi and Holmstrom will be gone, which will free up some roster space for another winger.

by dewman8810 on Jan 9, 2012 7:36 PM CST reply actions

Not quite

We lose Holmstrom and Bertuzzi (and likely Hudler) this summer, but have to think about Nyquist, Tatar, Mursak, and Emmerton. Nyquist and Tatar are already NHL-ready. Mursak showed flashes of something great int he preseason (and hopefully will begin showing it again). Emmerton showed flashes of a Maltby type player early on in the season. With the odds of Lidstrom returning growing smaller every season, I sincerely doubt we will spend that much money on our forward corps; it will have to be on the defense, even with Brendan Smith more than ready to make the jump

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jan 10, 2012 10:07 AM CST up reply actions

Emmerton is so expendable it's not even funny.

I like the kid, he tries hard, but with the other young guys you mentioned, I wouldn’t be the least bit sad to see Emmerton traded. He’ll get a shot with another team, but he’s just a spare part on the Red Wings.

by eight_legged_freaks on Jan 10, 2012 3:00 PM CST up reply actions

Trust me, I agree (even if I am one of the bigger Emmerton supporters around here). He is the most expendable Wing who does not have a curseword nickname. But at this moment, we have to account for him. He’s a Wing.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Jan 10, 2012 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

Not really

Hossa’s cap hit is ~$1350000 more than Franzen’s, which would have meant that we’d be missing Bertuzzi and maybe some other depth guy (Modano, for instance, probably wouldn’t have been signed). The real issue that the Blackhawks had was not that they overspent on top forwards, but that they signed Brian Campbell to a massive cap hit in addition to their spending on their top 4 forwards and top 2 defensemen.

by Seth9 on Jan 10, 2012 3:33 PM CST reply actions

This is what kills me every time I think of it
Hossa’s cap hit is ~$1350000 more than Franzen’s

We couldn’t have had both. But we could have had the better one for a smidgen more money. Which would have meant, probably, no Bertuzzi (like you said) or guy like Abdelkader. OR no Ericsson and yeah.

This will always make me sad.

by eight_legged_freaks on Jan 10, 2012 10:07 PM CST up reply actions

So we would have had to deal with Hossa and Smith instead of Ericsson this year?

Damn. We dodged a bullet there.

Face palm

I'm a Homer

by holmstrom96 on Jan 11, 2012 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

I hadn’t even considered that if we had Hossa, we would also lose Bertuzzi. Now I’m even more sad.
Hossa is a premier two-way forward, one of the best in the league. I don’t watch him when he’s not playing the Wings (or for them), but from what I’ve seen, he should get consideration for the Selke. Having him, Z, and Pav would have made us a real hard team to play against, because they all are relentless backcheckers and offensive threats. Yeah, Franzen shows up in the playoffs, and Hossa didn’t have a good playoff the year we had him, but he sure put up good numbers in the playoffs last year.

by NMJ on Jan 11, 2012 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

he can't get Selke consideration

because he’s lazy and takes plays off. Don’t get me wrong, when he wants to lift a stick and take the puck, he can take the puck from anyone, just as much as he can shut down any player in the game but he has to want to do it. I think the only players he really WANTS to shut down are Zetterberg and Datsyuk. I’ve watched a number of other games and he seems lack luster on defense, but when the Wings and ’Hawks meet, he hustles and plays better defense than when he plays against the Flyers or Bruins. I think he wishes he was still in Detroit and is trying to prove himself to Dats and Z or maybe even to Holland.

by styks on Jan 12, 2012 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

Between winning a cup and a huge contract...

I think he’s just fine with being in Chicago. Now please excuse me while I go and bang my head against the wall a few times.
