Discussion: Do you believe that last night was a turning point for Ty Conklin? Or should Ken Holland search the trade market for another back-up goalie? There are a lot of "easy" games this month. A few against the Coyotes, Columbus, Calgary and the Habs (though it's in Montreal and an Original Six rival, might not be THAT easy). When do you see Conklin getting another start?

Let's Go Red Wings.

I would love...

…to read a recap of the WIIMers experience at the game last night (if they have the time and inclination).

Also, loved the K.O. Franzen delivered after being taken down and punched in the head twice.

by loojay on Jan 9, 2012 7:36 AM CST via mobile reply actions

As for Conklin...

…I think we should see him more with the “easy” games coming up. He’ll have to play well for more than 2/3rds of a game before I’m not worried when he’s in. As for getting another backup, I’m a Joey Mac supporter and would have no problem with him as our backup.

by loojay on Jan 9, 2012 7:40 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

That could be arranged

Fuck Montador. He held Franzen in front of the net, they got knocked down, and then while Franzen is down he gets punched in the head by Montador. He deserves to get popped for that chickenshit.

Hopefully more coming. I’ve got to fly today and need to get through two games’ worth of CSSI. I’ll tell it was absolutely awesome being in that crowd.

It's what they do

I’ll take it over “Fuck Detroit” because at least it’s a tiny bit clever.

Also, the tears coming from SCH about the refereeing are hilarious. The Hawks have been called for a grand total of 2(!) penalties in 2 games against the Wings, but it’s the refs that cost the Hawks the game last night.

I’ll give them that Filppula got away with a crosscheck on the tying goal, but the Hawks were slashing and interfering all over the ice last night (I was at the game), and nary a call. Instead of the refs helping the Wings it’s them hopping on the bandwagon with the rest of the Hawk fans.

by Amerinadian on Jan 9, 2012 8:18 AM CST up reply actions

Not to mention

they have had 2 penalty shots in 2 games…. last nights might have been deserving, I would say they had their fair share of opportunities.

by bond021 on Jan 9, 2012 8:56 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly

The refs missed a TON of shit the Hawks were doing last night, and nary a call.

Funny that if the situation were reversed, we’d be the ones accused of being tin-foil hat wearing paranoid assholes.

by Amerinadian on Jan 9, 2012 9:01 AM CST up reply actions

I just

went over and read some of their thread, they make our tin foil hats seem pretty small. I mean seriously its all I can do not to say anything. I can honestly say if we had been pampered by the officials like the hawks have been the past 2 games I would have nothing to bitch about.I mean if I remember correctly the 1st game they had 5 poweplays, 1 penalty shot to our 1 power play and we still out shot them. In my opinion you cant fight those statistics.

by bond021 on Jan 9, 2012 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

Now that it’s mentioned, I do remember that. And yes, it’s definitely funny! Especially coming from people who have Pat Kane on their team. ‘Cuz, if their is any team in the league to be called “scum” …it’s the Red Wings. Hah.

I'm on record

As saying SCH is an awesome blog, and I’m cool with the Scum moniker but it seems like there’s a little more bile towards us than in years past. They have some new personnel over there?

Or maybe it’s a reflection of trepidation about their own team, perhaps? I dont want to jinx it but I think they’re more than one trade away from beating us in a 7 game series, especially if Sharp’s injury is going to be a long-term problem.

by Wizard of Corsica on Jan 9, 2012 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

And scene.

Firstly, the Ducks suck and it’s hilarious.
Secondly, MacLean is ridiculously good. The Sens are kinda my other favourite team, so I follow them a fair bit. You can really tell from the way the Paulrus talks, that he takes a lot of Babcock’s coaching ideas. It’s exciting to watch, you can tell the whole team loves playing for him. Turris raves about being rescued from the hell-hole that is the Coyotes.

i just realize something i hope you guys can touch on later...

i just noticed something interesting while i was looking at the western conference standings.
6 out of the 8 teams that currently would be in the playoffs if the season ended right now would be in the wings conference if realignment did happen next year. 6… and if we realigned what would happen there? Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago, Nashville, Minnesota, and Dallas are all in the top 8 in the west right now. leaving out only Columbus and winnipeg (although winnipeg is doing way better than that garbage team in columbus)
i dont know what it means but it sure was interesting to me.

by Drumbum87 on Jan 9, 2012 11:46 AM CST reply actions

If they were aligned as they were supposed to have been

Then the top 4 of those 6 teams would make it, with 2 teams left out.

It’s going to happen that a team is going to be left out of the playoffs simply because of the division they play in. We see it now when a Western team would be a division leader in the East but misses the playoffs in the West.

by Amerinadian on Jan 9, 2012 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

yeah i have seen that but it seems like it would be even worse...

not that i dont want realignment… i hate how it is. after watching how intense our last two games were i cant help but want to watch anything but more original 6 match ups. specially Toronto and Chicago.

by Drumbum87 on Jan 9, 2012 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

Also loser point....

if I’m understanding it correctly…taken out of the equation would make Vancouver, Detroit, Boston, and NY Rangers all tied for #1 in points with 52. Red Wings (and several others) only have 1 point from ties while others have 7 or 8 points.

It looks to me that all it does is encourage teams to play to tie to get at least that 1 point and not play for the win.

by wingsluver4ever on Jan 9, 2012 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

on a second note

why not just cut out Columbus and one other shitty team from the league? then it could be 4 seven team conferences or divisions or what ever they want to call them and we wouldnt have to watch nearly as much garbage hockey.

by Drumbum87 on Jan 9, 2012 11:49 AM CST up reply actions

Define "shitty"

Can’t just contract teams because they are bad. Unless there is a real problem that the team won’t survive and there are no viable relocation options, those teams will continue to exist.

Personally, I’d like to see the league go to an NFL-style alignment where there is an East/Centra/West division within each conference. It balances out the travel while also maintaining competitive balance within the conferences.

by Amerinadian on Jan 9, 2012 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

i like the idea of the NFL style as well

however there are soo many more teams piled up in the east that the conference lines would still be pretty silly. not to mention someone is still going to be bitching about travel. either way i want to play Toronto more. im sick of these rivals that only last 5 to 10 years.

by Drumbum87 on Jan 9, 2012 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

Dammit

Someone’s always going to complain about travel. But if it’s in the best interest of the league, and you’ve got half the league upset, then the Eastern teams need to compromise.

by Amerinadian on Jan 9, 2012 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

fair enough

but they did add teams for worse reasons lol. i guess you would have to look at it in more than one way. like if they have never been good for more than one year at a time and keep in the same pattern of get a little bit better until they can afford to pay the good players they bring up and have to either trade them or let them walk and then they suck again. like the KC royals of hockey.
also you would have to look at the money they bring in and the lack of fans, like tampa for example (sorry yzerman) even when they are doing good they cant fill their arena.
all in all i dont think the 2 seven team and 2 eight team conference thing is going to work out and adding 2 more teams is only going to drop the talent level in the NHL down even more than it already is.
oh i have another definition of “shitty” if the NHL has maintained ownership of you for more than a season you are shitty. hows that? fair?

by Drumbum87 on Jan 9, 2012 12:04 PM CST reply actions

I get what you're saying

But contracting teams means so much more on a bigger scale. First, you’re eliminating jobs for the players, who are part of a union. Imagine how well that is going to go over.

Then you’ve got the team staff, the arena workers, and the damage to the local economy.

While it’s nice to think you can just zap a team out of existence, the reality is that so many people would be affected that it’s a devastating move for the NHL to do. Relocation will always be looked at before contraction.

Put it this way: I’d expect them to add 2 teams before they eliminate them.

by Amerinadian on Jan 9, 2012 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

if they relocate or add teams i hope its out west...

aside from playing chicago im so sick of the western conference. but i know its probably never going to happen

by Drumbum87 on Jan 9, 2012 2:03 PM CST up reply actions

Whoa there cowboy..
also you would have to look at the money they bring in and the lack of fans, like tampa for example (sorry yzerman) even when they are doing good they cant fill their arena.

Not true. Living in the Tampa area, also being a Bolts fan, I attend games much as possible and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Last game I went to was on New Year’s Eve vs. Hurricanes and was a packed house, sold out in fact. Even hours in advance for the Espo tribute and statue unveiling. During last years playoff run, games were sold out weeks in advance and we had about 3-4,000 more people (including me) watching outside on the screens. Plus numerous watch parties, all over the area.

Not only has the new owner(savior), front office, team, Yzerman, city bought in (literally in some cases) but the fans have also. For example.. check out the season ticket sales alone. Craziness!!

And far as currently:

Then there’s the claim that fans won’t pay to watch the 1-3-1 system. Again, not true. In 2009-10, the Lightning were 21st in the NHL in attendance with an average of 15,497 fans per game. Last season, the Lightning ended up 17th in attendance, with their average fans per game going up to 17,268. So far this season, the Lightning are 8th in attendance, with an average of 19,150 fans per game. Funny, it seems like their attendance has increased in proportion to how many games they win. -Daniel Wagner, posted under opinion (Backhand Shelf)

Keep in mind here.. we’re also talking about hockey… in Florida. Not too shabby.

Per the Blackhawks

Sharp out 3-4 weeks with an upper body injury from last night’s game.

Speculation is that it might have been a slash from Hudler on Sharp’s goal. Others are saying that he might have fallen when Seabrook took a penalty. Either way, that’s a big blow to Chicago.

by Amerinadian on Jan 9, 2012 12:57 PM CST reply actions

It was totally Hudler's slash

Edzo told us repeated during a replay of it. He emphasized it a good 10-to-50 times. Definitely Happy’s fault.

Better video of Franzen/Montador

Notice how after Montador gives Franzen a shot in the back of the head right before the goal is scored, he gives him another shot after the goal is scored and Franzen is trying to get up.

Good on Franzen for popping him in the mouth. Montador deserved it.

by Amerinadian on Jan 9, 2012 1:10 PM CST reply actions

I agree that Montador deserved it

But I checked the box score on Yahoo and it showed that Franzen got a 2 minute roughing penalty at 3:08 of OT. Must have been for that punch. Glad it didn’t result in anything other than 2 more penalty minutes on Mule’s sheet.

by zfan16 on Jan 9, 2012 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

He did deserve it

And Mule deserved the 2 minutes. Had that been during the course of the game, I’d be ok with that penalty because it was a retaliatory punch.

Still doesn’t mean I can’t like what he did ;)

by Amerinadian on Jan 9, 2012 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

I liked it too

wish he would do it more often; maybe not so blatantly, but I don’t mind when one of our guys decide to fight back. If it were me, I might have hit him a little lower. ;-p

by zfan16 on Jan 9, 2012 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

Plus

The fact that the game was already won and over, might of had something to do with the retaliatory action. Most likely not, but maybe. Wise man say “punch Mule in back of the head, expect to get kicked back, in the face.”

Interseting, upon further review...

Besides Pav just being amazing…Mule/Montador are pretty much responsible for the goal.

If you watch them as it happens.. Mule has Montador’s stick between his legs, being Mule he doesn’t do much to free it and almost holds it there. At the same time.. Montador isn’t doing much at all to free his stick from Mule either, more just watching the puck/play.

This is key… because as they’re tying each other up, during this lovely embrace, Crawford tries to cover the puck as the “Mule-tador” combo trips over his glove. Not allowing him to cover, freeing up the puck for Dats-a-wrap!

The important thing to note, and what SCH ignores, is that Franzen has no obligation to free Montador’s stick.

If it’s tied up in his equipment, well it’s Montador’s fault for putting it there in the first place.
