Red Wings Top-25 Under 25: #23 Mitch Callahan

After a bit of a break we are back with our next installment in the Wings top-25 under 25 series. Today we will cover forward Mitch Callahan.

Mitch Callahan, RW, 21-

Mitch Callahan is by no means a flashy offensive player, and he isn't a shut-down defensive guy either. However, Mitch has the ability to become one of the top grinders for the Wings in the near future.

Known as "Dirty Harry", Callahan is a notorious enforcer for the Griffins and quite frankly I am looking forward to him beating the living hell out of Sidney Crosby in his first game with the Wings (Bold Prediction of the Year?).

Callahan measures in at 6’0", 190 lbs. He shoots right and currently wears number 15 with the Griffins.

Callahan was drafted 180th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. Before joining the Griffins in 2011, Callahan played with the Kelowna Rockets in the WHL. He also appeared on the US under-20 squad in the 2010 World Juniors.

Callahan's rookie season with the Griffins wasn't much to talk about offensively. He managed to muster up 9 points in 48 games to go along with his 108 penalty minutes. He also was second in the AHL among rookies with 14 fighting majors!

Callahan no doubt plays a very physical game. He plays a very scrappy game and always seems to have a chip on his shoulder. He also doesn't hesitate to drop the gloves and loves to hit anything that is in his reach. However, he doesn't have much of an offensive skill set which decreases his value significantly. He is a pretty good two-way forward and will have to continue to develop in that area for him to play in the NHL.

While some people seem to bash him for his size, I don't think that it will be an issue. Sure, another inch or two wouldn't have hurt but there are multiple quality grinders in the league at his size.

I don't expect Mitch to be a consideration for the Wings for at least two more seasons. He still has to improve his two-way game and fine tune some other aspects. However, when he is ready I truly expect this guy to be an impact grinder for us.
