In an interview with Mlive.com, Ian White stated "I got to be honest, I personally think he's [Bettman] an idiot"!
While players have previously spoken out about their discontent with the commissioner, few have taken it to this level.
Personally, I applaud Ian White for taking a stand and not cowering back behind the NHL's curtain of deceit. He showed that he stands up for what he believes in and that he isn't scared of anyone. Just one tip to White, try to show a little bit of that on the ice if we ever play another NHL game.
White goes on to say "Since he's come in I think he's done nothing but damage the game. If you think of all the moves he's made, the teams that are all struggling seem to be the teams he put in places where there's no hockey support".
I don't think that the NHL will do anything in retaliation to White, and I don't even think they can with the lockout in place. It also starts to rise the question of whether the players could "Revolt" in some way against Bettman in order to get him removed. One of the ideas that I have heard, is that the players could refuse to accept a new CBA as long as Bettman is at the helm. Obviously, this wouldn't be approved, however, it is some food for thought.
The news of White quote has made a pretty big buzz across the globe and maybe this might be the propelling force towards the beginning of the end in the Bettman era. Maybe I'm being a bit optimistic there though.
