Weekend Open Thread
It's Saturday, there's hockey on all day, and the playoffs are lingering.
Did you just see Sami Lepisto get pantsed and want to make various witty remarks about it? Here's your place to do that.
Let's go Red Wings!
(s/t to Wizard of Corsica)

At least our Power Play isn't as bad at the Flyers.
They gave up a short handed, got a 5v3 30 seconds later and gave up another short handed goal haha.

Who else is hoping that Pavel Kubina puts the Red Wings on his 5-team list?
Winging It In Motown, Over the Monster, Liberty Ballers, and Buffalo Rumblings!
NOT ME
Rather see us go after jack Johnson or Somone that could help the team long term( although I do understand it would cost a lot for johnson, but u know he’d love to come back to play in Michigan). I don’t like this idea at all I can think of plenty other defenseman I’d rather have than this guy that are available. Get a proven physical d man, not one whom is inconsistent and on a downfall. Not all of our aqusitions HAVE to be revival projects. To be honest the main reason I don’t like this is because I don’t know what we offered for him… If it’s anything more than later draft picks, or a prospect that would never get a shot wih club, than ill be upset, and a bit confused.
Damn it! Is that goal regulation size or what?!? Geez!!

I think it’s safe to assume it wouldn’t be much more than picks. In that event I’m all for it.

As much as I would love to get Jack Johnson, it’s just not going to happen. Despite having a lot of cap room, I think, on the whole, Holland is pleased with our defensive corps (and he should be, seeing as we’re 5th in GA/G) and he’s not going to get a top two pairing guy. The other other guy that comes to mind that could come in and be our 5th defenseman is probably Jaroslav Spacek. Between those two, I’d rather take Kubina. Not sure if there’s anyone else available that fits that I can think of at this moment.
If Holland’s going to make a Stuart-like splash, I’d bet it would be on a forward.
Winging It In Motown, Over the Monster, Liberty Ballers, and Buffalo Rumblings!
no on Jack Johnson
at his current contact, he’s not a risk worth taking.
You wanna tell me that to mah face?!
. . . In Philadelphia, no less. I bet that went over well.
I wonder if they’re in the running for Kubina.

Flyers and Jackets discussing Nash deal:

Oh boohoo. I guess it’s better than Nash going to a western team.
I don’t like to think of myself as a foil hat guy, but I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t find end up in New York or Philly.

in Philly’s case I assume that would be an offseason move.

Thusday technically isn't the weekend but...
I think Ribero deserves some recignition for this play: Video. Honorable mention to Razor for the commentary. Love that guy.
Meh
Ribeiro does cutesy moves only when they’re completely not necessary. Datsyuk does them to dangle Ribeiro.
Winging It In Motown, Over the Monster, Liberty Ballers, and Buffalo Rumblings!
I see what you're saying
But that was a necessary move, he needed to keep it away from the two defenders closing it. That was a beauty. Recognition (or recignition) given.
It's like ESPN Detroit, except less uptight: The Detroit Hustle

To be fair, they did just play Columbus.

Do you think their 9 game slide was because
they were missing Sharp on the PP?

JJ, does hancock cry if the wings get kubina
Cause that could mean no Smith in the plqyoffs
by RedWingFanInNC on Feb 18, 2012 4:53 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Maybe
If Brendan Smith gets a chance to play in the postseason, then I’m not so sure I’m too happy about that. It probably means we’re fighting through injuries.
Who knows though, the kid might thrive.

I would have absolutely hated to see us
handing over a 2nd and a 4th for Kubina. Glad we didn’t get him.
I can agree to that
Although I think I would have been okay had it been something like Pare and a 3rd. I wonder what our offer actually was?
Winging It In Motown, Over the Monster, Liberty Ballers, and Buffalo Rumblings!
We really need a guy
that can man the point on the PP. I cringe everytime Hudler gets the puck back there.
Read something interesting a while ago
First of all, Howard isn’t starting tommarow versus the Sharks, Joey Mac is. I do agree with this as Joey has been playing great lately.
Secondly, a lot of people have been wanting Conklin to be waived. But on an artical they proposed that since Jimmy will get the bulk of games, won’t it be better to send Joey down to GR to keep him fresh?
Thoughts?

fine by me, but if we have to resort to a backup in the playoffs I fear it’ll just be arranging deck chairs anyway.
Mac has surprised me though, got to give him that.

Vancouver just scored first against the Leafs
At least the NHL network carries HNIC for those of us that no longer get CBC
2-0 Vancouver

Interesting Thought
I can’t remember exactly where I saw it, possibly LeBrun’s twitter, or an article somewhere about the Kubina to Philly deal. Someone suggested Erik Johnson from Colorado as a possible target. Anyone got an opinion?
by Brandon Brooker on Feb 18, 2012 6:41 PM CST reply actions
For Philly or for us?
I don’t really like the prospects of trading for Erik Johnson.
Winging It In Motown, Over the Monster, Liberty Ballers, and Buffalo Rumblings!
Erik Johnson is a bust
I would not take him. He doesn’t fit the defensive need we would have.
by J.J. from Kansas on Feb 18, 2012 8:05 PM CST up reply actions
couldn't believe Colorado actually agreed to
Johnson for Stuart and Shattenkirk… That’s made St. Louis so much tougher today. Stuart.. was your prototypical powerforward, and Shattenkirk is a force on the PP and is very smart with the puck. There is no way Colorado would give him up that easily and also more less likely that Detroit will ever pursue him.
Grapes was ripping Detroit for not fighting again
He was sucking up to the B’s, Rangers & Nucks for being “tough”. Haha – look @ the standings Don :)
Huh?
Did a Wing duck a fight and I missed it? That guy is the hockey equivalent of your racist uncle.
WOW speaking of pantsed Stamkos just embarrassed some poor Caps D-man. 40 goals.

Hey Wings fans
Sharks fan here, just saying that… okay, I know I’m supposed to want you all to lose cause every game and stuff cause you’re leading us in the standings and you’re the big bad wings and all, but decent chunk of me is not-so-secretly glad that we get to face off against your home win streak.
Cause Sharks-Wings games are lots of fun. So I’m excited that the stakes are raised a little bit higher. Should be a good game.
That said, Nemo needs to clean up his act if we don’t want to hand you 23.
horrific sounding injury
Douglas Murray (SJ) is out indefinitately with a fractured Adams apple. Ouch.

I’m pretty sure the other games can be streamed from NBC tomorrow (legally) if you want an additional game to watch.
by RedWingFanInNC on Feb 18, 2012 8:45 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Yep
NBC will be offering streams of all of their games perfectly legally (which is nice, because I’m in the Chicago/St. Louis coverage area).
by J.J. from Kansas on Feb 18, 2012 9:26 PM CST up reply actions
Same
Was looking forward to finally watching a Wings game on my tv (since center ice blocks out 1/3 of my games, good value for my $180) but of course, chicago must be playing
I spent 30 minutes reconfiguring my den so I could hook my main laptop up to my TV and watch the stream of the game while breaking out my old netbook so I’ll still have access to the game thread.
I feel marginally inconvenienced by all of this. I know it’s stupid to complain, but I pay for Center Ice, a premium cable package, and NHL network. Why the shit am I held hostage to the coverage whims of the national broadcasters?
One of these days I pray that niche-tier pricing catches on. I don’t think the providers realize I’d still pay the same amount I’m paying for all of the useless filler to only get the niche stuff I really love in a manner that is most-convenient and consistent.
by J.J. from Kansas on Feb 18, 2012 11:55 PM CST up reply actions
I might do that
And hook up my laptop to my tv so I can at least pretend that I’m using the cable that I pay for. If I’m remembering right, NBC’s website has good quality for their streams.
I’m never buying Center Ice again though. When the game isn’t being shown on NBCSN or NHLN (neither of which I get), the only feed available is the another announce crew. Never even mind trying to get a game in HD, since my provider (RCN) only has ONE out of the 15 Center Ice channels in HD. At least with gamecenter they always have both announce teams and they’re almost always in HD.
You may want to check with your provider again about Tue number of HD feeds. I get essentially all games with in HD, usually with both feeds. Last year I too only had one HD feed at a time.
by RedWingFanInNC on Feb 19, 2012 7:14 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
Piggybacking on what RedWingFaninNC said
I have Time Warner and this season they doubled the HD channels (to two) and have done a MUCH better job of including both broadcasts. A lot of times this season, I’ve also gotten the Red Wings feed in HD for their road games.
However, after this season is over, I’m switching to satellite (more about being angry with Time Warner than being excited about having satellite), but DirecTV has pretty much ALL Center Ice in HD.
by J.J. from Kansas on Feb 19, 2012 9:22 AM CST up reply actions
I can confirm
That DirecTV Center Ice has carried both feeds for each game (unless it is a Canadian feed, which don’t get carried) in HD for about 3 years now. It’s pretty Sweet.
Fortunately, if you record the game you can just do it on the local Fox Sports station for your team to make sure you get the feed you want, as they don’t list which team is the home team in their Center Ice channel section.
