Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

In the "WTF" category of the day, Pavel Datsyuk apparently had some minor arthroscopic surgery on his knee this morning and is out for the next 2 weeks. I can honestly say that I did not see this coming.

It's also being reported that Jonathan Toews will be held out of tonight's game with an "upper body" injury, which I assume means his face froze in that stupid stare he does.

“Blackhawks” does begin with a B. It’s easy to understand the confusion, doncha think?

First reaction to the news..

Oh god oh god Oh god oh god Oh god oh god Oh god oh god Oh god oh god Oh god oh god….. Reaction after brief moment of freaking out. We have great depth, and are getting contributions from every line, so I’m not going to freak out and will instead take comfort in the fact that we have a team who can still win.

by SlapshotGoal on Feb 21, 2012 11:51 AM CST reply actions

WTF....

they sure kept that one under wraps…thank goodness it’s only two weeks…and is being taken care of before playoffs…

by wingsluver4ever on Feb 21, 2012 11:53 AM CST reply actions

Further info

Babcock was quoted as saying this has been an ongoing problem for some time and this was an opportunity to get it fixed before the playoffs. After reading all of the quotes on Twitter, I feel better about it.

Obviously his being out now hurts, but if this makes him 100% for the playoffs, then it’s best in the long term.

by Amerinadian on Feb 21, 2012 11:55 AM CST reply actions

We get it Datsyuk

You were already an amazing player, but this “get your knee fixed so you can be a badass like Yzerman in the playoffs” stuff is getting old real fast.

I know he had been questioned not too long ago about being "off"

Potting something like one goal in 14 games or so. Good call by whoever assumed something may be wrong.

Upon further thought

I think this could be just enough motivation to go out and get Grabovski.

I would’ve tried before, but now I will definitely. I am not Ken Holland, so I will fire up the XBOX and make this trade.

by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 21, 2012 11:55 AM CST reply actions

The timing is pretty good

to force KH’s hand this time. I was worried that getting Cleary back would have given the Wings that “new player” so no need to make a change.

I'm on board

What did it take to get it done in NHL 12?

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Feb 21, 2012 12:08 PM CST up reply actions

Sadly, I only have NHL 2009

So it took me almost nothing. Like a 3rd round pick. If only I had the most recent edition.

by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 21, 2012 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

is Grabovski a C?

I’d hate to move Filp off the wing so maybe this will “force” picking up Gaustad. I think in short term Tatar deserves a call up again to not play.

Haha

TRADE FOR EVERYONE!!!

In all seriousness, the Wings are not calling anyone up because Cleary is expected to be back. Waiting on confirmation, but it looks like first line will be Z-Mule-Bert and 2nd will be Flip-Cleary-Happy.

by Amerinadian on Feb 21, 2012 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

While I'm not in the trade for everyone camp

I am and have always been a furious rosterbator. I did think, out of all the hoopla about Rick Nash and the rest of the rumours that Grabo made the most sense. He’s a Powerplay specialist and a goalscoring centre.

Pretty valuable commodities. Especially when the team’s best playmaking centre just went down.

by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 21, 2012 12:24 PM CST up reply actions

True

Holland told Trevor Thompson that this will not change their trade deadline plans. If Grabbo was on their coveted list, Datsyuk’s injury won’t change anything.

by Amerinadian on Feb 21, 2012 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

We can only wonder...

Hope you appreciated all those extra u’s and centre spelled the right way.

I’m a little concerned about the phrase “furious rosterbator”

by SlapshotGoal on Feb 21, 2012 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

I’d never hear the term “rosterbator” before and I’m not sure I know exactly what it means.

by SlapshotGoal on Feb 21, 2012 12:43 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, in that case, I'll explain

Basically, sports fans really only want to talk about a few things. Players currently on the team, players on other teams, and how they can get those players from other teams to play for their teams.

It all can get very tiring for people who don’t have any interest in playing armchair GM (those people also tend to not enjoy eating Doritos, or remote controls. Or the lifestyle armchairs bring with them). So, a term has begun to make its way around the sports blogosphere.

Rosterbation.

Where you can sit endlessly with fellow rosterbators and discus things like “Oh yeah, wouldn’t it be awesome if the Wings traded for Grabovski! Oh wow, look at the Percentage of his Points earned on the Powerplay! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a percentage that high! Those numbers can’t be real!”

Basically, that’s rosterbation.

by eight_legged_freaks on Feb 21, 2012 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

Got it. Thanks. I guess that’s not my cup of tea, plus I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a remote control.

by SlapshotGoal on Feb 21, 2012 12:51 PM CST up reply actions

Really sad. :(

The guards at the Joe on Sunday said that the reason he rushed out without saying hi to the fans was for some appointment.

Just think about all the other great players. Lids, and Z and Jimmah!

When I went to my first ever Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena, Franzen, Rafalski, Zetterberg, Cleary, Filppula and Kronwall were all injured and weren’t playing.

The team got shutout, at home, by Chicago, and at no point in the game were they ever in it at all.

No Problem

Talking with some Hawks fans today, Toews being out is much worse for them than Datsyuk is for us, and I definitely agree. We all would love the best player in the world to always play, but lets have him when it counts in April and May.

We get Cleary back, who was a top-6 forward and he replaces him on the 2nd line. Toews replacement? Brendan Morrison.

My initial reaction was actually good.

I’d think we’d all know it if Dats was really injured that badly…if it’s a nagging injury that requires minor sugery with a relatively short turnaround (2 weeks is nothin for knee surgery), then go for it. It only increases Dats’ chances to remain healthy and in good playing shape for the grind. Sacrifice now for the long run…the fact that they’re even doing this is awesome because, well, if the Wings were’nt #1 in the NHL right now with the best depth scoring out there, then I bet you this surgery doesn’t happen and we never know of the nagging injury.

I must be in an optimistic mood today.

got Cleary coming back… but lose Pavel for 2 weeks, LeCavalier for an unspecified amount of time… no Morrow… yeah… this sucks… but on the plus side, I picked up Drew Miller!

I don’t buy their excuses. I think they’re just going to celebrate together how much the rest of the league apparently loves them, according to those player polls.
