Jimmy Howard apparently suffered a hand injury during last night's game. Uh oh...

*Update per the Wings' press release; Howard sustained a broken finger on his right hand. He will miss the next 2 games on the road trip and will be re-evaluated in Detroit next week.

Things just got real.

Not terribly worried except for our PP currently. Not saying we won’t lose our lead, but I think the team can pull through this. They’ll learn to play in front of Conklin or our favorite Big Mac attack.

Broken finger. Excellent. How long does that keep a goalie out nowadays? I know a broken finger would put me on bed rest for a month, but I assume Tiberius is a bit tougher than I am.

Maybe 2 weeks

Graham made an excellent point on twitter. We only play 1 playoff team the next 2 weeks and have a nice homestand.

welp

there’s his reprieve from playing 70+ games. (even though he’s probably on pace for closer to 65 games than 70.) as long as he’s back for the playoffs, i’m not worried.

You wanna tell me that to mah face?!

Sorry

That’s just my natural reaction to a report titled “Howard Injured”.

by rrasco on Feb 3, 2012 9:26 AM CST up reply actions

lol

it’s okay. Just trying to keep people from flipping their lid. Sometimes we forget this is a marathon. When we get into that mentality, we become the freaking Maple Leaf fans who get excited over winning a few in a row in November or something. They always forget that it’s just a small section of the season. Don’t worry about it. I’m sure Jimmy isn’t.

Malik is reporting the official report from the Wings is 2 games missed, not 2 weeks as everyone is speculating.

by Apocalyptic0n3 on Feb 3, 2012 9:05 AM CST reply actions

yeah

then they’ll look at the finger again. Just depends on if it needs splinted and whatnot. Jimmah’s tough.

That was in the press release

My guess is that he misses the next 2 games (duh), then they take him home, re-check him and see how bad the break is. If the reports are true and it’s his pinky finger on his blocker hand, then it should heal pretty quickly and he won’t miss much time.

by Amerinadian on Feb 3, 2012 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

I want him to miss as much time as he has to in order to be able to do his job as well as he has been

But I also want to keep hope alive that he can meet or set the record for wins by a goaltender in a season.

But..but...but

I thought Tiberius was beyond injury?

Why!!!????

J/k. It’s probably good for him. He can get a rest. Edmonton and Phoenix just saw a faint ray of hope shine through that storm cloud approaching.

Either way, I’m not willing to tempt fate by writing that game off and pissing him off.

Not too high

.913 Save Percentage in GR. It’s not exactly like he’s tearing it up over there. Conklin has the reins.

"Conklin has the reins" isn't exactly confidence-inspiring

Plus I believe stripe said Mac’s been playing well lately. If Conk lays an egg against Edmonton…we’ll see

Playing in AHL is harder for a goalie than the NHL

So moving up his Save% will likely go up when he moves to the NHL. I have faith in both of them to hold us over until Jimmy comes back.

Let's be fair to Conklin

He has played only road games on a team which has stunk on the road. He’s received 2.20 GFG in support. That’s not going to get it done from an offensive standpoint. And then in some of the games (NYI, WSH, MTL) he received zero support from his defense as well. Conklin has been far from a world-beater, but his team has left him out to dry in a big way.

His stats, with the blowout games previously mentioned removed, read:
3-3-0, .925 sv%, 2.18 GAA.

Pierre McGuire is a blithering dimwit.

He has done a lot better as of late compared to earlier in the season

it kinda stinks for my fantasy roster atm, but if Howie needs the rest to recover from an injury, I dont see the next 2 games being too much of a concern, if we go 1-1 in that span, thats fine. He’s played better the last few outings that he’s started (you can’t really blame him for what happened in Montreal, the whole team pretty much went on ASG Break a day early…)

So that’s where the two game thing is coming from. Let’s hope it heals well enough after a five or so day break.

I would consider having him take calcium supplements

It wouldn’t hurt to give the bones a little extra to work with. It was recommended for a soccer player friend of mine who had to have surgery because two of his toes on one foot were crossed over each other. I think they had to break one of the toes to get it back into position. A soccer player’s feet are as essential to his sport as a goalie’s fingers are to his.

That's not how it works.

He’s probably eating a balanced diet already and getting 100% of the calcium he needs. Upping the amount won’t drastically increase how much calcium the body takes in. Also, I bet there’s a team doctor/nutritionist who has already told him what to do and knows way more than either of us.

Conks was due for a start soon anyway, I’m not too worried.

Yeah... any "injury" headline could have been much worse than this...

he can still do conditioning. he can still be around the team.
he can still do all his Jimmy things he does to keep people’s heads on straight.
Rick Dipietro, he is not.

exactly

they were looking at his blocker hand. And it was the trainer looking at it, not the equipment manager (their names escape me at the moment)

POTG

That will make the POTG race more interesting since Howard is the obvious choice in 95% of the Wings wins.

Bingo! How fun! But, I digress. Where were we? HL

by Hans Landa on Feb 3, 2012 12:58 PM CST reply actions

Two questions for you guys:

1.) Is Joey MacDonald any good?

2.) Did Howard break his finger in a fight while being an enforcer for another one of your guys?

by TheFlyingCavallinis on Feb 3, 2012 2:03 PM CST reply actions

joey is ok

and if anything howard’s finger probably got broke after kesler dove onto it trying to draw a penalty

by Drumbum87 on Feb 3, 2012 2:30 PM CST up reply actions

maybe Burrows tried to eat it?

Or maybe he was trying on TPH’s rings and put them all on his pinky at once. That’s a lot of weight for 1 finger.

by SlapshotGoal on Feb 3, 2012 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

na no one can do that but TPH

if anyone else tries to put on his rings they zap them like the ruby slippers in the wizard of oz

by Drumbum87 on Feb 3, 2012 3:08 PM CST up reply actions

Sorta odd

I saw a lot of buzz on twitter about it being his pinky finger…however, it is his index finger

I had a dream (nightmare, really) last weekend that Jimmy broke his foot in the stupid ASG and was out for weeks, woke up in a cold sweat. Apparently my psychic powers are a little bit off.

And yes, I am a huge dork. Get well soon, Tiberius.
