WIIM Community Guidelines Update

In August, we ran out a rewritten set of community guidelines for how we like to do things around here. Those guidelines have done well for us this season and we've enjoyed a very good fan experience with regulars and guests alike. Recently, we were given a change to the way we're doing things which was not adequately covered in those guidelines. To clear up confusion, I've copied those guidelines and added the new wording.

* * *

If you're new around here, I'd like to welcome you to Winging It In Motown, the SB Nation blog dedicated to the Detroit Red Wings. If you're a returning member of the community, welcome back. Please take a moment to review the site guidelines.

First and foremost, WIIM is a community. As is such, it's important to note that well-established community members are going to be given more leeway than outsiders. This has always been the way things have worked and I don't see any reason to change that. If you have not earned a reputation here, then don't assume that the site's moderators are ever going to side with you in a fight. Better yet, just don't get into any fights. Try a discussion instead. It's just like a fight, except fewer people think you're a jerk afterwards. That doesn't mean you're not free to disagree with people though. Some of the best discussions come from people respectfully settling their differences of opinion.

With that in mind, here is a list of rules and guidelines.

  • Please do not post links or even hints to how users would be able to find sites for illegal game feeds or merchandise. Comments which contain these will be deleted. While there is a certain level of interpretation to this rule, we will always choose the side of caution when it comes to deciding whether a comment does this.
  • We're easygoing on language. Cursing is not forbidden. Just remember, if it can't be tasteful, it needs to be funny. Still, homophobic slurs, racial slurs, and the dirtiest of the misogynist words (you know which one) are strictly forbidden. Consider this your only warning. Using those is grounds for an insta-ban.
  • Friendly banter is fine, teasing is shaky ground, and antagonizing is a no-no. Passive-aggression is still aggression and it will not stand, man. No trolling.
  • We love to hear from you. If you've got a topic in mind that you want to discuss, the Fanposts section is a great place for it so we can discuss it. Anything goes in the Fanposts. Just try to keep it hockey-related.
  • A little self-promotion is fine. A little more than that is spamming. This rule will tie heavily into the concept of how much clout you have around here. Spammers get banned, friends of the blog get linked.
  • If you're going to post a picture in a comment, that comment must have a title. This is especially true for .gifs. Having a title on a comment allows a user to click the title and hide the picture. We will delete pictures posted without titles, no matter how funny or how many cats they have in them. Not everybody has a brand new Commodore computer and sometimes, when the site gets image-heavy, users need a way to lighten the load.
  • Speaking of pics, to be intentionally broad on the rule, just... use judgment when posting.

To wrap up, we like to have fun around here. We hope that you will too. Thanks for being a part of our community. We're looking forward to another great year.

Thank you.

On a personal note

Nobody here is in any trouble for anything that’s been posted while we’ve been getting the rule out. If there’s one thing 2nd grade taught me, it’s that it’s frustrating as hell to get in trouble for breaking rules you didn’t know about. That was the reason for this post. We’re not going to ban people for honest mistakes or for not knowing that we had changed a guideline (but we WILL consider it should anybody choose to blatantly ignore the new guideline).

I’ll actually be doing a full post on the concept of illegal streaming soon. In the meantime, know that my personal opinion on this matter is that I really enjoy having the WIIM community where we’ve got so many great members and I’ll do what it takes to make sure that doesn’t get taken from us.

I really appreciate how understanding and helpful you’ve been.

illegal streaming

i’m all for it.
i live in minnesota (allegedly the “state of hockey”. also, a pretty liberal state in a social welfare kind of way. so why the hell isn’t there a state-sponsored 24/7 hockey channel? WTF?!) and without streams would have little access Detroit games, even with them being the most broadcast NHL team this season. Seriously, NBCSN has been surprisingly awesome.
so, yes, my entitled attitude makes me think i deserve it but i actually like the fact that it’s always pirated from FSDetroit. it’s like a weird way of keeping solidarity with the city and somehow sticking it to big cable. i now know all the local detroit commercials by heart, for crying out loud.

Yep

I’m sure most of us who don’t live in the area feel the same. With that said, If you want it bad enough, they can be found without involving/risking anything at WIIM. Yes, it’s real easy to just post “where can I find one and/or is there one?” Like many used to do (including me) …but thankfully this year, with one main addition, hasn’t been a problem. Either way, there is always google and many things like it. Point being, anything can be found if you look hard enough and not worth risking our community, just for ease of access. Plus, how much “ease of access”, do we get in other forms from this great site?!? GO WINGS! GO WIIM!

Seriously though I agree with all of this. Love it here and so does everyone else and that is because J.J., Graham, Josh and all the others do a great job. Keep it up guys.

For me out here in pdx, this forum is like watching the game at a bar in Hamtown,

except you folks are classy. Keep up the excellent work and grab me another fucking beer, when you get a chance.

Concerning the dirtiest of misogynistic words,

Are we talking P or C?

Not that it matters, I’m just curious.

It’s the C-word. There’s not a lot of usage of the P-Word either. and there have been a few questions about it. Just be judicious with its use. There are plenty of funny dirty words.

Anyway

Thanks to the mods for continuing to make Winging It In Motion such an amazing community. I hope we can support the wings to continue their motion towards the playoffs and eventually to that elusive #5 for our 5.

so is it okay...

… if I post a FanShot asking about what to do before/after the game and how to get to the airport from the Joe Louis after I freeze my ass waiting for Pasha to autograph his cross-stitched portrait?

I have a framed pic of baby Pasha lifting the 2002 Cup. You should see how young he looks.

OMG SO PRECIOUS

My friend cross-stitched me a portrait of Pasha with the cup from 2008. That’s what I need signed. It’s all framed and hanging up in a little spotlight.

Awesome, inspiring, wonderful and even sometimes superb (WIIM)!

I had to signup after reading JJ’s spooge on the WIIM family thingy. Pardon my spelling and grammar , I am only a novice on the keyboard(of the Englaise language too). Have been a fan (of WIIM)for a few and always enjoy the read… everyone here seems to do an exellent job. With a good dose of humor to boot. I raise my coffee mug to a toast to WIIM. Now…if you’ll excuse me, It’s time to burn…er…bake , ya, that’s it…bake the cookies. LGRW!
