The Hudler Paradox

It can pretty much be agreed that this entire year, most everyone has looked at Hudler as trade bait. Every time a move has been discussed, Happy's name has popped up. And I've been a heavy supporter of this; he's small, he isn't the best skater, he lacks defensive awareness, and he's a womanizer. Sure, he's got a bit of scoring touch, but does that really outweigh all of those things that he lacks? Is he really worth keeping?

I want to say no, but after last night, I'm at a crossroads.

Star-divide

Zetterberg and Filppula have made Hudler something I never thought he'd be: Consistent. The playmaking of Flip this season and the work of Hank on the defenders has allowed Happy to become a constant threat. Look at his stats: 17 goals; 12 in the last two months.... That's insane for someone who, last year, could only buy goals at the JLA gift shop. He's shooting at 23% - almost a quarter of his shots go in! And it's killing me!!!!

I personally don't care for Hudler. He's just "meh" to me. But I want what's best for the WIngs. I want #5 for #5. I want to see a parade this summer. And if getting these wishes to come true means keeping Huds, then I want Hudler. BUT that doesn't mean we don't still need a big scoring winger. Somebody's got to go if we're going to bring in someone better.

So the question remains: Do we tinker with what's good already by moving out Happy? Or do we keep the lil' bugger?

What say ye?

My vote is "either"

I don’t want to see Hudler traded, but if it nets us a much better player, I’d be ok with it.

I didn't think of that.

I’ll add it as an option. Thanks, J.J.

did anyone else

see Hudler try to check someone from behind right at the blue line? I don’t know who it was because my feed wasn’t HD, but it was as if Spud Webb tried to run into Shaq. Hudler looked like he jumped into the middle of the guy’s back and he hardly moved. I actually laughed out loud when I saw it.

I remember that

It was a defenseman who was about to take a shot (might have been Bieksa or Edler). Huds put a pretty good hit on him.

I really like Huds

Though I can’t honestly say that it isn’t at least partially because of “The Adventures of Happy Hudler” over at NOHS. Ive defended Happy pretty staunchly the last two years. I like his work in the corners, and you can’t argue with his scoring this year. Plus, from the snippets we’ve seen this season, he’s a really good locker room guy.

What he’s worth salary wise, I have no idea…

I was thinking about writing a fan post this morning concerning the potential lines if we were to pick up a big top six winger. Hard to mess with the second line. But, as much as he deserves a demotion, Franzen would probably be wasted on the third line, unless Helmer can be a great playmaker for him.

Goalies are enforcers too.

My opinion

Franzen-Datsyuk-New guy
Filppula-Zetterberg-Hudler
Miller/Eaves-Helm-Cleary
Mursak-Abdelkader/Emmerton-Bertuzzi/Holmstrom (Two kids & an old goat 2.5)

Obviously depending on who would get moved in any said trade.

I was thinking about this exact thing last night while watching the game..

Because I kept thinking “Man, Hudler’s trade value is skyrocketing!” but at the same time, I’m thinking “but who could we legitimately bring in that’s going to put more pucks in the net than Hudler right now without giving away too much??”

I’m at a crossroads.. I don’t know. I’d like to see what we could get for him, but I wouldn’t mind if he stayed either.
