Help with Detroit visit PLEASE
Hey guys,
Couple of questions. I'm actually flying in ALL the way from CA to go see the Wings play the Sharks on February 19th.
1). Website to buy tickets for the Sharks vs Wings game? I know there are a whole bunch but do you have a preference? I'm willing to spend some money because god knows that if I fly all the way to Detroit from San Jose, I want the seats that are NOT the last row of the Joe.
2). Any good places to eat around the Joe?
3). Fastest way from the JLA to airport as I'll be running to catch a flight after waiting to see if Pasha or Z stop to sign some swag (cross-stitch portrait, got to stop right?)
4). What do you guys know about this outdoor skate on the 18th that's happening and how early would you recommend one gets there? if they start at 11, is 9AM early enough?
Sorry for all the random questions. Not used to going to a GOOD hockey city where people care about the game. (last time I was in San Jose, someone asked me if they had a hockey team... serious).
And also, hope this is okay to ask.

For tickets, The ticket link here at WIIM uses TiqIQ, which is kind of like a travelocity for hockey tickets. that lets you see where tickets are being sold and select your price range, or bid on tickets that users are auctioning.
For food and directions, I’ll defer that to the locals, but there’s a great coney place not too far from the Joe.
The open practice is available to the first 2,000 fans that make it. That isn’t a lot of space. I honestly have no idea how many people are going to want to be camping out at Clark Park on a February Saturday morning, but I can imagine they’ll fill that capacity. I honestly can’t tell you if 9 will be early enough.

Thanks!
All right… I will try the TiqIQ and see what happens.
And I’m willing to go there at 7AM. If I’m flying to talk to a friend and see my Wings, talk can happen outside and Wings are high on that priority.

Just wanted to say something about third-party ticket sellers
I bought tickets using StubHub.com once. They were bad seats, but cheap. Anyways, when I arrived at the arena, the tickets, which were 100% real season tickets shipped to me via FedEx, wouldn’t scan. This was because the seller also sold the sam tickets on another web site.
The staff at Joe Louis Arena were extremely accomodating and sold us lower bowl tickets at a super low price. It was awesome as we had driven 7 hours to get there and were going to have to turn around and basically go home.
So, that’s just a cautionary tale. The good news is those websites usually offer 100% moneyback guarantees.

We bought our tickets last night
From Ebay. Hopefully they’ll work. We’ll see how it goes? Fingers crossed but thanks for the heads up.
I have some Red Wings at Sharks tickets from StubHub. And hopefully those will work.

Food – Hockeytown Cafe and Greektown are my top two choices to eat before the game and you can either take a shuttle from Hockeytown Cafe or the people mover from Greektown. There are some other smaller places like Small Plates, Detroit Beer Co. and Slows or Roast if you want good BBQ and/or steak .
Travel – The fastest way to anywhere in Michigan is by car. Our mass transit is nonexistent. If you rent a car that is the way to go or you can call a cab company or metro cars which run from the airport.
Outdoor skate – It will be packed. There will be people there at 6 a.m. I don’t know how many, but judging from the last one, You will have to get there at least hour before they let the people in to wait.
Hope this helped and good luck. If you need anything else don’t hesitate to ask.

There’s a shuttle from Hockeytown? Sweet.
So how often does TRAFFIC happen? Cause google maps says its 30 minutes from JLA to airport, but I’m just paranoid about being stuck and missing my plane. So do you guys get bumper to bumper traffic often?
That’s what I figured. I’m voting for a damn early place there. I want to see the boys skate and that’s the closest I’ll be. Ever.
Thanks for the input. I’m sure there’ll be more questions.

Check out Lafayette Coney Island
Its only a tenish minute walk from the Joe on Michigan and Lafayette. Best coneys in the state next to Lipuma’s. It just isn’t a real Detroit experience without a coney dog.

... what's a coney?
and is there a vegetarian version?

No...
The Coney is a hot dog with all meat chili, mustard and onions. A veggie version would defeat the purpose.

Thank you for educating.
I’ll pass this on to my meat eating friends. :) (I may be the only Russian vegetarian you’ll meet).

Food
Lots of food choices in and around downtown, so depends what ya want. I’ll echo some of the other comments above.
Along Woodward out by Comerica park, there’s Hockeytown Cafe is cool for what it is and does provide a shuttle, but personally I don’t find the food all that great. Cheli’s Chili is right there too, also with shuttle service. Detroit Beer Company is tasty with a good selection of brews. The Rub BBQ Pub is fairly new so I’ve not been there yet, but it’s supposed to be good.
A little closer to the river around Campus Martius is a Hard Rock Cafe if you like that. Jimmy Johns for quick. A block west is the famous feuding Lafayette and American Coney Islands.
Anywhere in Greektown will be good food. Pizza Papalis if you want serious deep dish pizza. Other joints along Monroe and Beaubien for Greek dishes. Five Guys Burgers and Fries is also right there for an excellent burger and less wait. There are a couple shuttles from here or it’s an easy ride to the Joe on the People Mover from here. However the People Mover after the game is somewhat of a nightmare.
Not much right near the Joe. There is Cobo Joe’s and Six Pack Bar and Grill which have a very limited menu and are packed on game days. The Renaissance Center is a short walk from the Joe and has a food court, but I’m not sure of the hours. There’s a fancy restaurant at the top too.
If you’re willing to eat not quite downtown Atwater Brewery is excellent and just up the river. Mexican Town has a few good places, I personally prefer Armando’s. Slow’s BBQ is a couple blocks from Old Tiger Stadium and is amazing. But as the name says, it is not quick, and there’s pretty much always a wait to be seated. These are all about a mile or so from downtown and not the prettiest of Detroit locations.
If you’re in a rush after the game, I would avoid parking in the Joe Louis deck. That’s usually 30 minutes minimum just to get out. The Cobo roof deck, Ren Cen deck, or one of the other lots/decks near Cobo are better choices.
For quick parking and eating:
Park on Fort St. around Cass, hit up Cobo Joe’s or Anchor Bar for some food and pre-gaming on the walk to the arena.
Definitely avoid Slow’s on game night. They will be busy and they are not quick.
Pierre McGuire is a blithering dimwit.
Thank you so much!!!
I think we are going to try and wait for some players so most people will be gone by then. I was just thinking that if I have a 7:30 flight and we leave the Joe at 5:45 would I still make it…? Those types of calculations.
