Speculation has been running wild lately about where the top free agents will be headed in a few weeks. Today, Tim Panaccio of Comcast Sporstnet Philly added a little bit of gasoline to the rumor fire with his report that top defenseman Ryan Suter does not want to play for the Philadelphia Flyers. He also added this interesting note in his article:
In fact, the source said, all of Suter’s preferred destinations, should he leave the Predators, are in the Western Conference – not the East.
Detroit is generally conceded to be his top choice.
Of course, this is by no means a guarantee that Suter will be headed to Hockeytown on July 1, but the report does make the possibility of it seem more likely. You have to think that if Suter hasn't re-signed with the Predators by now, he's going to test the free agent market. And let's be honest, why wouldn't he at least dip his toe in the water and see what kind of crazy offers are thrown his way.
Hell, if I'm Kenny Holland, I'd be on the phone with David Polie trying to acquire Suter's rights right now. Personally, I'd offer up Jakub Kindl and a draft pick. Make it a 5th or 6th round pick and if Suter signs it gets upgraded to a 3rd or 4th. Is that price high? You bet. But this is going to be a summer where crazy things happen with the Red Wings' organ-i-zation. This team has lost a lot of pieces, some of which cannot be replaced. The old rules should no longer apply. Ken Holland HAS to get Ryan Suter in a Detroit sweater. It has to be done. I don't care what it takes. Suter needs to be a Red Wing.
What would you give you to acquire Suter's rights?
Let's Go Red Wings.
