The Red Wings get another good old Ontario boy. They're destined for greatness now, right? The kid put up 22 goals and 15 assists in 63 games last season. He is supposedly the fastest skater in the entire draft. He was once thought to have been a late first round but his stock dropped after a poor season last year. Athanasiou is still needs to bulk up a bit, but the face the kid has wheels is encouraging.

Here's what RedWingsCentral had to say
One of the fastest skaters available in the draft, Athanasiou went to the Memorial Cup final with London and was rated 40th among North American by Central Scouting. Slipped somewhat because of his inability to produce more and needs to work on his consistency, but potential is there.
Here's a scout's take from SportsNet
There are always high expectations for players as skilled as Athanasiou. A wickedly fast skater with slick puck skills, Athanasiou was expected to play a key offensive role with the Knights in 2011-12 and was pegged as a likely first-round pick. Although he showed flashes in a 22-goal, 37-point regular season, Athanasiou disappeared for long stretches and was a healthy scratch various times during the Knights’ playoff run.
Scout’s take: “He’s not a bad mid-round pick based on his skill and upside, but the kid isn’t the smartest hockey player. Everybody knows the book on him.”
