With the UFAs left, it might be in the Red Wings best interest to address their offense this offseason and wait until next season to bring in a top tier defenseman. There are too many questions surrounding the remaining key defensemen. Rozsival, Spacek, Finger, Eaton, Kubina are all past their prime and mostly been overpaid. Colaiacovo has yet to play a full season. He's barely played over 60 games the past 4 years. Foster, Sauer, Jurcina, Huskins, Hannan are all bottom 3 defenseman. While they don't make huge mistakes, they're not going to be any better than Ian White is in their own zone but don't add the offense that White does.
Pickings are certainly slim. So how about this:
Forget about finding a top defenseman this year unless it is via trade. Sign a veteran stay at home defenseman to pair with Brendan Smith in the 3rd pair for a 1 year deal and readdress it next year. Next year's class of defenseman should be more promising. Among the list of possible UFAs are Mark Streit, Ryan Whitney, Alexander Edler, Tobias Enstrom, Ron Hainsey, Robyn Regher, Rob Scuderi, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, and if he signs a 1 yr RFA, Shea Weber.
Here's our defense this year:
Kronwall - Ericsson
White - Quincey
Randy Jones - Smith
Next year it could be:
Kronwall - Weber/Enstrom/Whitney
Streit/Vlasic - Ericsson
Hainsey/Jones/Scuderi - Smith
So lets go out and get Semin, Nash, Doan, or Ryan to score in bunches this year. We're going to need it.
