Red Wings Pride - From a first time poster...

Hello Friends and Fellow Red Wings Fans,

First, please allow a moment for me to introduce myself. My name is Daniel and I was born in Warren MI in 1977. My favorite players of all time are Fedorov, Yzerman, Lidstrom, and Darren McCarty holds a special place in my hockey heart. Though I currently live deep in Blackhawks territory, I have been and always will be a Wings fan. I lived in Denver during the heyday of the Wings/Avs rivalry in the late '90's and have had to defend my Red honor on many occasions. It seems that no matter where I live, my love of the Red Wings has caused a lot of ire among my peers. I have learned mostly to shrug off the occasional "Red Wings suck" comments that I hear whenever I am walking around with my Yzerman jersey on, because I have learned one very important lesson about the Wings "Haters": they are jealous motherfuckers.

The Red Wings represent everything is great about a sports franchise. From their top notch team of quality leaders (does anyone remember Yzerman? How about that one guy, Lidstrom?) to their Original Six nostalgic glory to their quiet resignation to be champions, contenders and the pride of the city of Detroit every single year is a testament to the team's commitment to providing a quality product to us, the fans, every single year. We as fans invest a lot of heart and emotion into this team and I personally feel that we are getting a pretty great deal in return. Fans in other cities only dream that their team could fulfill such a role in their lives. Nearly every single NHL team/city out there secretly (or openly, NASHVILLE) wishes they were the Red Wings.

Their management team is the envy of nearly every other professional sports franchise. These aren't the NY Yankees, the team that everyone loves to hate. The Red Wings have earned the respect and envy of nearly every other team out there, hockey or otherwise.

One thing that I really admire respect is the way the team works to keep players long-term, and Yzerman and Lidstrom's careers are a perfect example of that long term mentality. Players WANT to play for the Red Wings.

Also, and I am going to cover this in a later post, those of us from the Detroit area really do NEED something to hang our hopes on, something to be proud of because we have seen our communities unravelled in the last few decades. The city of Detroit really does need us! The Red Wings provide an unbelievable amount of money and jobs to the area.

So the next time you hear some douchebag in a Blackhawks tshirt saying "Red Wings suck dude"..just know that what he really means is "Damn man, I wish my team was a perennial contender. I wish my team had a better management. I wish we had the class, the history and the fortitude to be the envy of professional sports worldwide. I wish we had more SWEDES on our team."

Until next time...
