Red Wings Sign Veteran D-Man Kent Huskins

Wikimedia Commons

With Twitter all aflutter about the Red Wings signing a mysterious veteran D-man to fill up their defensive corps thanks to injuries to Jakub Kindl (groin), Jonathan Ericsson (shoulder), and Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder), we got lost in the excitement that is Gustav Nyquist's being called up to play in place of Mikael Samuelsson (groin, targeting computer).

It's Kent Huskins

Thanks, Bob McKenzie!

Huskins is a decent depth pickup. A 33-year old stay-at-home kind of guy who isn't Mike Commodore, so probably won't tweet from the mall during hockey games. He's played with Anaheim, San Jose, and St. Louis, amassing 67 points in 299 career NHL games with 169 PIM sprinkled in for good measure.

He likely won't get the kind of ice time that led to his career-high 22-point output in a full 82-game 2009-10 season with the San Jose Sharks, but he's a net-front presence who hopefully can take care of the difficult task of answering the question "am I currently the closest person to my own goal who isn't wearing goalie equipment?"
