The Golden Gophers played their first exhibition game of the season, 2 assists, 2 SOG, 15 PIM, and was a +1 in a 5-1 win. Marshall earned his 15 penalty minutes in the last five minutes of the game via 5 for fighting, and a 10 minute game misconduct.

Marshall didn't attend the Wings prospect camps this year, and while the Wings are still keeping him on the radar, he needs to have a big year if he wants to keep it that way . He's not out of the names that get mentioned a lot in the prospect discussions, so if you're not familiar with him, here's some information to get you up to speed.

Hockey's Future 2013-2014 Red Wings Prospect Outlook:

Ben Marshall has always been viewed as something of a hybrid defenseman, a player whose appearance is closer to that of a small, skilled forward than a hulking, punishing defenseman. The 2013-14 season will go a long way toward determining whether Marshall will always be a hybrid-type player or whether he can anchor a team's blue line.

Marshall will be one of Minnesota's top four defensemen and should see ample playing time at even strength and on the powerplay, allowing him an opportunity to showcase his offensive abilities. Marshall will need to show that he has continued the defensive improvement he began to display at the end of the 2012-13 season, though he will have plenty of time to do this; Marshall is entering just his junior year at the University of Minnesota.

Red Wings Central Scouting Report:

SCOUT COMMENTS
"He's real dynamic, an excellent skater, a good stickhandler and a good shooter. He's one of those guys who just takes the puck and goes ... It's his skating, his competitiveness and the way he makes plays. He competes, he wants to score goals, he wants to win games and he has that energy about him on the ice." - Red Wings scout David Kolb (June 2010) ... "When he's got the puck he's like Phil Housley. He sees the ice, runs the power play. One-on-one he blows past people. It'll be interesting to see how he handles the next level." - Central Souting scout Jack Barzee (June 2010).

STRENGTHS
Outstanding wheels ... Dynamic offensively ... Loves to rush the puck but makes a good first pass, too ... Great puck skills ... Hard shot ... Offense-first mentality ... Knows how to quarterback a power play ... Great vision and playmaking ability ... Competitive and energetic ... Impressive offensive skills could make him an interesting forward project if defense doesn't work out.

WEAKNESSES
Extremely small for a defenseman, even in today's game ... Needs to show he won't be a defensive liability ... Needs to use good judgment with his offensive pinches.

PROJECTION
The Red Wings drafted Marshall in the hopes he might become a dynamic offensive defenseman and he's certainly been making good progress. He was one of the top-scoring blueliners in the USHL in 2010-11 and it looks like he might be on the verge of the same success in the NCAA. With Nate Schmidt turning pro after signing an NHL contract with the Washington Capitals, Marshall has an opportunity to make a name for himself and lead Minnesota defensemen in scoring in 2013-14.

Western Michigan University (NCHC): Mike McKee

# Name Pos Team Leauge GP G A Pts +/- PIM SOG
2 Mike McKee D Western Michigan Univ. NCHC 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

The Broncos kicked off their season with an exhibition game against Western Ontario and came away with a 5-2 win. This is McKee's first season at Western, after playing two seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL.

Saturday, October 5th: McKee had 1 shot on goal and was a +3 in the Broncos exhibition game. Box Score

McKee did not attend the Red Wings prospect camps this year because of injury. If you're not familiar with McKee yet, here's a little bio from Red Wings Central.

SCOUT COMMENTS
"He's a guy who's got an immediate presence on the ice. He was far and away the toughest kid in that league and probably, in this draft class, he's got to be right up there ... Big man, skates well for his size, real good straight-ahead speed, hard shot. He has some tools offensively, but at the end of the day ... he's probably going to be a stay-at-home type." - Red Wings scout David Kolb (June 2012) ... "If this (six-game suspension, his sixth of the 2012-13 season) doesn't get the message across to him ... He sat in that penalty box for three goals against Fargo the other night. We need him on the ice for 25-plus minutes, as opposed to in the penalty box for 15 minutes." - Lincoln Stars head coach Chad Johnson (Lincoln Journal-Star, March 2013).

STRENGTHS
Absolutely massive and - what might come as a surprise - moves surprisingly well on his skates for his size ... Good straight-ahead speed ... Boasts a heavy shot ... Loves to be involved physically and uses his body to make a difference in the corners and in front ... Happily drops the gloves to defend a teammate, as his penalty-minute and fighting-major totals indicate.

WEAKNESSES
Takes far too many undisciplined penalties to be an effective defenseman and needs to be smarter and pick his spots ... Shifted from forward to defense when he was 15, so still has a great deal of learning to do at his new position ... Needs to improve his defensive positioning and his reads ... Doesn't have much offensive upside, despite good skating and hard shot.

PROJECTION
The Red Wings don't often select the biggest, meanest guy available in the NHL draft, but that changed in 2012. It remains to be seen whether the rest of McKee's game will develop enough to get him to the NHL. He was suspended by the USHL six times in 2012-13 and needs to learn to balance being tough with being disciplined. The good news is he is headed to Western Michigan in 2013-14 and will have plenty of time to round out his game under the tutelage of ex-NHL head coach Andy Murray.

Hockey's Future had this to say about Bäckman

Top European Prospect
Mattias Backman, D, Linkoping (SHL)

Mattias Backman has not just taken steps towards progressing, he has taken leaps and is now considered one of Detroit's most important defensive prospects. Backman is a large defenseman who plays intelligent defense with a flair for point production. Backman has emerged into one of the highest scoring defensemen in the SHL, where he had a breakthrough 26 point season for Linkoping in 2012-13.

Backman will continue to refine his game in the SHL during the 2013-14 season, his third season in the SHL and first since being signed to an entry-level contract by Detroit that runs through the 2015-16 season. Though he could stay in the SHL for the 2014-15 season it would seem likely that he will make the move to North America.
