Flames Blog: Matchsticks and Gasoline

The Flames are not a good hockey team. The Red Wings don't seem to care about that though. Detroit hasn't beaten Calgary since January 31, 2012.

Once again… JANUARY 2012.

It's been over a season since the Red Wings have defeated the Flames

1 year, 9 months and 1 day to be exact.

That breaks down to 91 weeks.

640 whole days.

15,360 hours.

921,600 minutes.

55,296,000 seconds.

And that's not even counting the time that passes today leading up to puck drop.

Hell, I have not one, but TWO nephews who live in a world where the Wings are winless against the Flames. Who the hell wants to live in a world like that? Certainly not you or I.

So tonight is about more than just two points. It's about finally beating the Flames and giving the hundreds and thousands of children of Hockeytown their first taste of beating up on the league's doormat.

It's time to end our long national nightmare.

Opponent Outlook

Player to Fear: Let's go with Mike Cammalleri. He's got five points in five games played this season. In his career, he averages a point per game against the Red Wings (22 points in 22 games). so he's had previous success. Another name is Curtis Glencross. He's just one of those guys that it feels like he always does well against the Wings.

X-Factor: Happy is the X-Factor. He's played well. He's putting up points and he's going to want to play even better against his former teammates. Plus, the Wings haven't beaten the Flames since Hudler signed in Calgary. In fact, last time the Wings beat the Flames 640 days ago, Hudler scored the game winning goal. Go figure.

Familiar Faces: Two former Red Wings currently call Calgary home. The previously mentioned Jiri Hudler and Joey MacDonald. Bertuzzi had a cup of coffee with the Flames back in 2008-09.

Thumbs up (One Thing to Like About Calgary): The shoulder patch on their new third jersey is pretty cool.

Thumbs down (One Thing to Dislike About Calgary): Umm… it's in Canada.

Bullets of Knowledge

  • The Red Wings are 68-65-16-1 all-time against the Flames.

  • Detroit is 3-0-1-1 on November 1 since the 2003-04 season. Lots of history for this one. The Wings last played on this date during the 2011-12 season at home against the Wild. Detroit lost to Minnsota 2-1 in overtime. It should also be noted that in the 2007-08 season, the Wings played the Flames in Calgary on this date and won 4-1. They also played the Flames on this date in 2006-07 too. That game was at home. Detroit prevailed 3-2. And way back in 2003-04, the Wings played the Oilers and tied 4-4.

  • The Wings are currently 1-0-0 on Fridays. The win came in the second game of the season, a 3-2 OT victory over the Hurricanes.

  • Howard is 7-5-0 all-time against the Flames with a 2.66 GAA and .900 SV%.

Prediction: Red Wings win 4-1. Weiss is your player of the game and the hero to hundreds of Red Wings fans under the age of two.
